Markiana nigripinnis is a large, hardy characid from the lowland river systems of central South America — the Paraná, Paraguay, and Mamoré basins — where it moves in schools through the middle water column of warm, vegetated reaches. A distinctive blue-green metallic sheen, a bold humeral spot, dark zigzag patterning along the scale rows, and a vivid orange anal fin combine to make this an understated but genuinely handsome fish. Despite growing to nearly 5 in standard length, it remains rarely encountered in the hobby; the few importers that have handled it praise its tolerance of cooler subtropical temperatures and its compatibility with robust South American tankmates.

Taxonomy & naming

Markiana nigripinnis was described by Alberto Perugia in 1891 in his work on South American fishes, based on material from the Río de la Plata basin; the type locality is the Río de la Plata, and syntypes are held in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Genova (MSNG 9222) and the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW 57 677). Because Perugia described the species in a genus other than the one it now occupies, the authority is cited in parentheses as (Perugia, 1891).

The genus Markiana is a small Neotropical characid genus placed within the family Characidae. A reproductive-biology study published via SciELO Brazil noted that the species had been placed in the subfamily Stevardiinae, a clade characterised in part by external fertilisation. Morphological characters noted in that study include four teeth in the inner premaxillary row and crenate lateral-line scales — details that help separate Markiana from superficially similar genera in the rio Prata and Mamoré drainages. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Markiana nigripinnis reaches a maximum recorded size of approximately 5 in standard length (SL); typical aquarium or wild-caught specimens are closer to 4.5 in total length (TL), with occasional individuals reported to 6 in TL. The body is moderately elongated and laterally compressed, with the large, high dorsal fin that gives rise to some of its common names.

Coloration is striking for a large characid: the flanks carry a blue-green metallic-silvery base colour overlaid with a series of dark zigzag markings that follow the scale rows from mid-body toward the tail. A pronounced dark spot sits at the base of the caudal peduncle, and a humeral spot marks the shoulder region just behind the operculum. The anal fin is brillant orange, a colour that is particularly intense in males and serves as a primary indicator of sex in aquarium settings. The pelvic and dorsal fins may show dark pigment consistent with the species epithet.

Habitat

The species is distributed across the Paraná, Paraguay, and Mamoré River basins of central South America. The range is somewhat disjunct: the core population occupies the río de la Plata drainage (Argentina, Paraguay, and southern Brazil), with a separate component in the Mamoré system of Bolivia and Mato Grosso, Brazil. Type material from reproductive studies was taken from a shore lake (floodplain lake) of the rio Cuiabá in Mato Grosso.

Markiana nigripinnis is a benthopelagic freshwater species, occupying the middle water column in slow to moderate-flowing rivers, backwaters, and floodplain lakes where aquatic vegetation is available. Water conditions recorded from its range reflect the warm-subtropical to tropical character of these lowland drainages: temperatures of 68–79 °F (68–79 °F), pH 6.5–8.0, and general hardness up to roughly 30 dH. The species' tolerance of the lower end of that temperature range distinguishes it from many Amazonian tetras and suits its occurrence in the cooler Paraná–Paraguay system.

Feeding

Markiana nigripinnis has a trophic level of approximately 3.0, placing it as a mid-level consumer. FishBase classifies it as omnivorous; Aquarium Glaser's observations of imported specimens specifically note that the species requires plant material in its diet and should not be kept on a purely carnivorous menu.

In the aquarium a varied regime suits it well: quality flake and pellets form the staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp, alongside algae wafers or blanched vegetable matter to satisfy the plant-food requirement. Given its eventual size, it will take larger prepared foods and small feeder invertebrates readily. Feeding across multiple small meals per day rather than one large daily feeding tends to keep activity levels high and competition at the surface manageable in a mixed school.

Mating

Like other characids in the Stevardiinae, Markiana nigripinnis uses external fertilisation; the SciELO study on its reproductive biology confirmed the species is non-inseminating. Males are distinguished from females primarily by the more intense orange colouration of the anal fin; males may also develop a slightly slimmer body profile at equivalent length. Courtship behaviour in the wild has not been described in detail in available literature, but the species is presumed to follow the broadly typical characid pattern of open-water spawning among conspecifics, with males pursuing receptive females into vegetated areas.

Seasonal reproductive cycles likely track the flood-pulse of the Paraná–Paraguay basin, with spawning peaks associated with rising water temperatures and levels in the austral spring and summer (October–March). The floodplain-lake habitats where specimens have been collected would provide the sheltered, plant-fringed conditions typical of characid spawning sites in these river systems.

Breeding

No detailed captive-breeding account for Markiana nigripinnis appears in the available literature or hobby sources, and the species has been bred in captivity only rarely. Based on its morphology, phylogenetic placement, and the confirmation of external fertilisation, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, open spawner with no parental care — the standard mode for non-inseminating stevardiines and for most Characidae.

Breeders attempting the species would likely follow the approach used for robust Neotropical characids of similar size: condition a group with live and frozen foods, provide a spacious tank with fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, raise the temperature to the upper end of the species' range (around 79 °F / 79 °F), and remove adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. Eggs and fry would be expected to be free-swimming within a few days of hatching and to accept small live foods at the fry stage. Specific clutch sizes and incubation times remain unrecorded in available sources.

In the aquarium

Markiana nigripinnis is described by importers as a hardy and non-shy species that schools actively and tolerates the cooler end of the temperature range occupied by subtropical South American fishes. Its compatibility with cichlids such as Geophagus brasiliensis has been noted by Aquarium Glaser, suggesting it holds its own with robust co-inhabitants. A group of six or more is recommended to elicit natural schooling behaviour and reduce inter-individual tension.

Given its potential size of 4.5–6 in TL, the species calls for a spacious aquarium of 59 in or more in length, well-filtered and furnished with open swimming space alongside patches of robust aquatic plants. Water chemistry should reflect its natural range: neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5–8.0), moderate hardness, and temperatures in the 68–79 °F (68–79 °F) band. The lower end of that range suits a subtropical setup, making it compatible with Geophagus, peaceful cichlids, and similarly sized South American characids. The orange anal fin shows best under warm-spectrum lighting against a planted backdrop. The species remains infrequently available in the hobby and is likely to arrive as a sporadic wild import from Argentina or Brazil.

Conservation

Markiana nigripinnis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated in March 2021. The species has a broad distribution across the large and ecologically resilient Paraná–Paraguay and Mamoré basins, which together encompass one of the largest river systems in South America. This wide range, combined with the absence of documented major population declines, supports the Least Concern listing.

However, the floodplain habitats on which the species depends — shore lakes, vegetated backwaters, and slow river margins — are under long-term pressure from agriculture, deforestation, and water-management infrastructure across the Paraná–Paraguay watershed. The rio Cuiabá drainage in Mato Grosso, where reproductive specimens have been collected, lies in one of Brazil's most rapidly transforming agricultural frontiers. Ongoing monitoring of lowland characid communities in affected sub-basins would be warranted to detect any future status change.
