Taxonomy & naming

Microgenys lativirgata was described by Pearson in 1927 from specimens collected in the Río Púsac above Balsas in Peru, in the Marañón River drainage of the upper Amazon basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Microgenys lativirgata Pearson, 1927; the original spelling lativirgatus was later corrected to lativirgata to achieve proper gender agreement with the feminine genus name.

The genus Microgenys is a small characid lineage placed in the subfamily Creagrutinae by the Catalog of Fishes (FishBase additionally lists affinity with Stevardiinae, reflecting ongoing phylogenetic discussion). The genus contains only a handful of recognised species. The family-level assignment follows Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, which remains the primary nomenclatural authority; the species is referred to Family Characidae in the broad sense.
