Taxonomy & naming
Microschemobrycon meyburgi was described by the German aquarist-ichthyologist Hermann Meinken in 1975, with the type locality recorded as the Rio Xeriuini, a tributary of the Rio Xingu basin in the state of Pará, Brazil. The genus Microschemobrycon is placed within the family Characidae and encompasses a small number of diminutive Neotropical tetras; revisionary work on this group and its relatives has proceeded alongside broader surveys of the Xingu fish fauna. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records Meinken 1975 as the valid authority.
A closely related species, Microschemobrycon cryptogrammus, was described more recently from the Rio Curuá, also within the Rio Xingu basin, illustrating that the genus has a broader footprint within that drainage than early collections suggested. Taxonomic placement of Microschemobrycon within Characidae has been broadly stable, though the internal phylogeny of small characins in this region continues to attract revisionary attention as new material and molecular data accumulate.
Morphology
As its genus name suggests — from the Greek for 'small' and 'scheme' or 'outline' — Microschemobrycon meyburgi is a small, slender-bodied characid. Precise size data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature; the genus as a whole comprises miniature tetras, and M. meyburgi is not known to exceed a few centimetres in total length.
Like other small characids from the Xingu basin, it presumably carries the family hallmarks: a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, a forked tail, and a small, upturned or terminal mouth suited to capturing small invertebrates. Detailed external morphology and meristics specific to M. meyburgi are not well documented in sources available at time of writing; researchers seeking diagnostic characters should consult the original 1975 description by Meinken.
Habitat
The type locality of Microschemobrycon meyburgi is the Rio Xeriuini, a blackwater or clearwater tributary within the Rio Xingu drainage of Pará, Brazil. The Xingu is one of the major southern tributaries of the Amazon and supports an extraordinarily diverse ichthyofauna, including many narrow-range endemics. Smaller tributaries such as the Xeriuini typically run over sandy or rocky substrates, shaded by gallery forest, with soft, acidic, low-conductivity water stained dark by dissolved humic compounds.
Specific ecological data — depth preferences, microhabitat associations, seasonal movements — have not been published for M. meyburgi in the sources surveyed. By analogy with related small characids in the Xingu basin, it likely inhabits the margins of streams and smaller rivers, sheltering among submerged vegetation, leaf litter, or root tangles, and moving into flooded forest during high-water periods.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Microschemobrycon meyburgi has been published. Small Characidae from Amazonian blackwater systems are typically opportunistic micro-predators, taking small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, microcrustaceans, and fallen terrestrial insects from the water surface and mid-column.
In an aquarium context, species of this general type accept finely crushed dried foods and small live or frozen invertebrates such as micro-worms, Artemia nauplii, and Daphnia. A varied diet supports condition and colour; feeding little and often suits the small stomach capacity of miniature tetras.
Mating
Specific mating behaviour for Microschemobrycon meyburgi has not been described in the literature available at time of writing. Members of the Characidae broadly are egg-scattering open spawners: males court females with lateral displays and brief chases, and fertilised eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate with no subsequent parental involvement. Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs may lodge among vegetation, though the adults make no effort to guard or tend them.
Given the species' small size and Xingu-basin origin, spawning behaviour likely follows the general characid pattern common to its genus. Males of small tetras often develop minor nuptial differences — slightly brighter pigmentation, subtle fin extensions — during courtship, but no published account of such features exists for this species.
Breeding
No captive breeding account for Microschemobrycon meyburgi appears in the hobby or scientific literature surveyed. Breeding methodology, if attempted in aquaria, would logically follow the approach used for similarly sized Amazonian tetras: a small, well-planted breeding tank with soft, acidic, warm water, dim lighting, and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg substrate. The adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Eggs of small Characidae typically hatch within 24 to 48 hours at tropical temperatures, and fry require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial fry-rearing preparations before graduating to newly hatched Artemia. Data on clutch size, incubation time, and fry development for this species remain unpublished.
In the aquarium
Microschemobrycon meyburgi is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium hobby and is very unlikely to be encountered in trade. No care accounts were found in English-language hobby literature or forum archives at time of writing. Were it available, husbandry would logically follow the template for small, delicate Amazonian tetras from soft blackwater systems: soft, acidic, well-filtered water low in nitrates, dim lighting, a heavily planted or leaf-litter-furnished tank, and calm, similarly sized tankmates.
Its small size and presumed sensitivity to water quality would make it unsuitable for community tanks with large or boisterous fishes. Any aquarist receiving specimens — likely as incidental bycatch in a collection of other Xingu tetras — should prioritise soft, tannin-stained water and avoid overfeeding, which rapidly degrades water quality in small tanks holding miniature tetras.
Conservation
Microschemobrycon meyburgi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List at the time of writing (status: Not Evaluated). The species is known from a restricted type locality in the Rio Xingu basin, one of South America's most biogeographically important river systems. The Xingu has faced severe anthropogenic pressure from dam construction — most notably the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex — and associated changes to flow regimes, sediment dynamics, and water chemistry that have affected fish communities throughout the drainage.
The narrow known range of M. meyburgi and the magnitude of the hydrological alterations affecting the Xingu system make formal conservation assessment a priority for this and the many other small, data-poor Xingu endemics. Until a current-status survey is conducted, the species' true population size and any ongoing decline remain unknown.
