Microschemobrycon melanotus was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912. The name is treated as a combination following his authorship, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) records the parenthetical authority, indicating the species was moved to its current genus after the original description. It is placed in the family Characidae and, according to ITIS (TSN 641373), in the subfamily Characinae, within the order Characiformes.
The genus Microschemobrycon contains a small number of South American characins united by minor but consistent morphological characters. M. melanotus is the species most associated with the Guiana Shield drainage (Essequibo) and the upper Negro system — two major but geographically separated river drainages that share a portion of their characid fauna owing to natural headwater connections across the Guiana Highlands.
Morphology
M. melanotus is a slender, small-bodied characin with a reported maximum total length of 1.5 in. The dorsal surface is characterised by scales with darkened margins that create a reticulated or dusky appearance along the back — the feature encoded in the species name. The overall build is typical of the genus: an elongate, somewhat compressed body, a small mouth, and the Characidae hallmark of an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal.
As with many small characins from this clade, detailed live-colour descriptions from wild-caught individuals are sparse in the published literature. The dusky dorsal scales appear to be the most consistent diagnostic feature visible in preserved specimens and field observations, and the species is described as benthopelagic in habit — living and foraging near but not strictly on the bottom.
Habitat
The species occupies freshwater habitats in two distinct South American drainages: the Essequibo basin in Guyana and the Rio Negro basin in Brazil and Venezuela. Both are large, blackwater-influenced systems draining off the Guiana Shield, typically characterised by warm temperatures, low to moderate pH (especially in the humic-stained Negro), and low mineral content in many reaches.
FishBase characterises the species as freshwater and tropical, with a benthopelagic lifestyle. The broad distributional range across two major drainages suggests reasonable habitat flexibility within the bounds of warm, lowland tropical freshwater.
Feeding
FishBase assigns M. melanotus a trophic level of 3.3, placing it as a mid-level consumer — above strict herbivores but below apex predators. This figure is consistent with the feeding ecology of most small Characinae, which take a mixed diet of small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and aquatic insects along with incidental plant or algal material.
In captivity, comparable small characins of similar trophic level readily accept good-quality micro-pellets, finely crushed flake, and small frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, micro-worms, and brine shrimp nauplii. Varied feeding supports condition and colour.
Mating

Fry of small characins at this size class typically require infusoria or comparable very fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

Microschemobrycon melanotus is rarely seen in the aquarium trade and no established husbandry account exists for the species. Its small adult size (under 2 in TL) and blackwater-basin origins suggest it would be kept similarly to other small Characinae from the Negro drainage: a well-filtered, dimly lit or moderately lit aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, driftwood, and leaf litter or fine-leaved plants to provide structure and visual security.
Being a benthopelagic species, it likely uses mid-water and lower-water zones more than strictly surface-oriented schoolers. A peaceful community with other small, non-aggressive species would suit it. The lack of hobby documentation means care parameters are inferential; hobbyists keeping this species should record and share observations, as firsthand data would genuinely advance knowledge of this understudied genus.

FishBase records a Least Concern (LC) status for M. melanotus based on a 2020 assessment, reflecting the species' occurrence across two large river drainages (Essequibo and Negro) without evidence of a restricted range or major population decline.
