Monotocheirodon duda was formally described by Carvalho, Thomaz, Urbano-Bonilla, and Prada-Pedreros in 2024 in the Journal of Fish Biology (doi: 10.1111/jfb.15738) as a new member of the subfamily Stevardiinae within Characidae. The genus Monotocheirodon is a small Stevardiinae genus previously known from the Orinoco and adjacent drainages of northern South America; its placement within the subfamily is supported by shared features of the reproductive system, including internal insemination facilitated by specialised male anal-fin structures.
The specific epithet duda is the Spanish word for 'doubt,' chosen by the authors to acknowledge the uncertain taxonomic placement of the species within the genus at the time of description — a candid nod to the unresolved phylogenetic signals uncovered during the study. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name; the species is listed as Monotocheirodon duda Carvalho, Thomaz, Urbano-Bonilla & Prada-Pedreros, 2024.
Morphology
Monotocheirodon duda is a small fish, with males reaching approximately 1 in standard length and females a slightly smaller 1 in SL. The body is slender and characteristic of the Stevardiinae, with the laterally compressed form and terminal mouth typical of small mid-water characids.
The most remarkable morphological feature is the sexual dimorphism of the anal fin. Males possess a gonopodium-like structure consisting of an enlarged urogenital papilla associated with modified anal-fin rays, forming an intromittent organ analogous to the true gonopodium of poeciliid livebearers but of independent evolutionary origin. Females lack this modification entirely. The combination of very small adult size, the Stevardiinae body plan, and this pronounced reproductive dimorphism makes M. duda immediately recognisable in a hand specimen even without detailed meristic examination.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper Guayabero River basin in Colombia, a tributary system of the Orinoco drainage. The type locality lies at low elevation, below 230 ft, in shallow streams typically less than 3 ft deep and up to roughly 230 ft wide. Substrates are sandy, pebbly, or rocky, and flow is described as moderate. Water clarity ranges from clear to silty depending on local conditions.
This is Orinoco basin headwater terrain — streams draining the Andean foothills toward the llanos — with water temperatures and chemistry consistent with moderately fast-flowing Colombian piedmont rivers. The restricted geographic distribution of the known collection localities, confined to the upper Guayabero system, is noted by the authors as a conservation concern and is the basis for the species' preliminary vulnerability assessment.
Feeding
Gut content analysis of collected specimens revealed a diet based primarily on periphytic algae — diatoms and cyanophytes scraped from submerged surfaces — supplemented opportunistically by chironomid (midge) larvae. Notably, sand grains were also found in stomach contents, a finding consistent with active substrate grazing rather than purely water-column feeding.
This diet profile places M. duda among the algae-grazing Stevardiinae, a dietary guild unusual within Characidae more broadly. In captivity, small characids with similar feeding ecologies generally accept fine-ground flake, algae wafers, and small frozen invertebrates, though no established husbandry literature yet exists for this newly described species.
Mating
The modified anal fin of the male — functionally analogous to a gonopodium — indicates that mating in Monotocheirodon duda involves internal insemination rather than the simple broadcast spawning of eggs and sperm that characterises most characiforms. Among the Stevardiinae, internal fertilisation has evolved multiple times and takes several forms; the gonopodium-like structure in male M. duda represents one of the more structurally elaborated examples documented in the subfamily.
The behavioural details of courtship and mating in the wild remain undescribed. By analogy with other internally fertilising Stevardiinae, males likely compete for mating access and approach females to transfer sperm using the modified anal fin, with fertilisation occurring internally before eggs are released. The pronounced structural dimorphism — present versus absent gonopodium-like organ — makes sex determination in adult specimens straightforward.
Breeding
No detailed breeding observations for Monotocheirodon duda in captivity have been published. The internal fertilisation inferred from the male's modified anal fin structure distinguishes this species from the typical open egg-scattering of most aquarium characids. Whether fertilised eggs are subsequently broadcast over substrate or vegetation, or whether any form of delayed fertilisation or sperm storage occurs (as is known in some Stevardiinae), has not yet been documented.
In the broader Stevardiinae, species with internal insemination typically still deposit adhesive eggs externally among fine-leaved vegetation or substrate after fertilisation, with no parental care. Until captive observations are available for M. duda specifically, that general pattern is the best available inference for hobbyists attempting to maintain or breed the species.
In the aquarium
Monotocheirodon duda is a newly described species from 2024 and has not yet established a presence in the aquarium trade. Given the restricted collection locality in Colombia and the absence of any established captive population or exporters specialising in the species, it is effectively unavailable to hobbyists at present. It may appear in specialist collections in the future if collection permits are issued and export is commercially viable.
Based on its known ecology — a shallow-stream, substrate-grazing micro-characid from moderate-flow Orinoco piedmont waters — a small aquarium (10–15 US gal) with fine substrate, moderate current, good water quality, and a school of conspecifics would be a reasonable starting point. Its very small adult size (under 1.5 in SL) means it is incompatible with larger tankmates. Water temperature and chemistry reflecting its Colombian piedmont origin — warm, moderately circumneutral water — should be targeted, though precise aquarium parameters have not been published.
Conservation
The authors of the original description recommended that Monotocheirodon duda be assessed as Vulnerable under criterion D2 of the IUCN Red List categories, citing the species' restricted known range within the upper Guayabero River basin and the anthropogenic pressures affecting that region, including habitat alteration. The species has not yet received a formal IUCN assessment with a dedicated entry on the Red List — a typical lag for newly described species — but the Vulnerable D2 recommendation is drawn from the description paper itself.
The Guayabero River valley has experienced agricultural conversion, infrastructure development, and conflict-related land-use changes across its history, pressures that affect the shallow-stream habitats where M. duda occurs. A species with a small, restricted range and no known populations outside its type drainage is inherently vulnerable to localised habitat degradation, and the authors' precautionary recommendation reflects that reality. Future field surveys to establish the full extent of the species' range, and formal IUCN assessment, are priorities for its conservation management.
