Taxonomy & naming
Monotocheirodon kontos was formally described by Naércio A. Menezes, Stanley H. Weitzman, and Irani Quagio-Grassiotto in 2013. The type locality is the Río Inambari at Muspaypampa, near Sandia in the Puno region of Peru (approximately 14°14′41″S, 69°25′51″W), at elevations ranging from roughly 350 to 3,656 ft. The species was described in the journal Papéis Avulsos de Zoologia.
The genus Monotocheirodon currently contains two species: M. kontos and the previously described M. drilos, with which M. kontos is known to co-occur in the Ebebahuaeji drainage. Both species belong to the family Characidae. The valid name stands as Monotocheirodon kontos Menezes, Weitzman & Quagio-Grassiotto, 2013 per Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences).
Morphology
Monotocheirodon kontos is a small characid: males reach approximately 1.5 in standard length and females approximately 1.5 in SL. The species displays the slender, laterally compressed body form typical of many small South American characids.
Dentition is notable: premaxillary teeth number four in a single row, each bearing seven cusps in adults. The most diagnostically significant feature is the presence of a well-developed urogenital papilla in both sexes; in males this structure is elongate and serves as an intromittent organ for internal fertilisation, a trait highly unusual among characids and central to the genus Monotocheirodon's distinctiveness.
Habitat
Monotocheirodon kontos occurs in the Río Inambari system, which drains into the Río Madre de Dios basin of southeastern Peru. The type locality at Muspaypampa, Sandia, spans a broad elevation range (350–3,656 ft), suggesting the species may occupy foothill and submontane stream environments. FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic and tropical freshwater.
The Madre de Dios basin forms part of the upper Amazon system in a region where Andean foothill streams meet lowland Amazonian habitat. Data on specific microhabitat preferences — substrate type, vegetation, current speed, water chemistry — remain sparse for this recently described species.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Monotocheirodon kontos in the wild have not been published. Based on its small size, benthopelagic habit, and its position within Characidae, it is presumed to be a micropredator or omnivore feeding on small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, and organic matter, as is typical of similarly sized characids from Andean foothill streams.
In an aquarium context, a diet of small live and frozen foods — baby brine shrimp, micro worms, Daphnia — alongside finely crushed dry foods would be appropriate, though the species is not established in the hobby and no practical feeding accounts exist.
Mating
Monotocheirodon kontos is an internally fertilising species — an uncommon reproductive mode within the family Characidae. Males possess an elongate urogenital papilla that functions as an intromittent organ, enabling sperm transfer directly into the female. This is a defining characteristic of the genus Monotocheirodon and distinguishes it from the vast majority of characids, which fertilise eggs externally.
Details of courtship behaviour in the wild are undescribed. The internal fertilisation strategy may allow females to store sperm and spawn asynchronously with direct insemination, as has been documented in other internally fertilising characids, but specific behavioural or histological studies on M. kontos have not been published.
Breeding
Because Monotocheirodon kontos is internally fertilising, its breeding biology differs from the egg-scattering norm among small characids. Internal fertilisation likely produces adhesive or demersal eggs spawned after insemination, but the precise spawning substrate, clutch size, and incubation period have not been described in the published literature.
The species is not known to be held or bred in captivity. No parental care is recorded or expected, consistent with the general pattern among characids. Data on fry size, development, and early diet are absent from current literature.
In the aquarium
Monotocheirodon kontos is not an established aquarium fish and is not available through the ornamental trade at present. Any future husbandry would need to account for its small size (under 1.5 in SL), its Andean foothill provenance — suggesting cool to moderate tropical temperatures and clean, well-oxygenated water — and its unusual internal fertilisation, which would complicate breeding compared to standard egg-scattering tetras.
Its sympatry with M. drilos in the wild indicates it can co-exist with congeneric species. Given the sparse data, aquarists encountering this species should treat it as a delicate, data-poor microcharacid requiring soft, clean water, small live foods, and careful observation.
Conservation
Monotocheirodon kontos has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No formal population estimates, threat assessments, or range surveys specific to this species have been published.
The Madre de Dios basin in southeastern Peru is subject to ongoing pressures including gold mining (particularly artisanal and small-scale mining in the Inambari watershed), deforestation, and road construction associated with the Interoceanic Highway corridor. As a narrowly distributed, recently described species known from a limited number of collections, M. kontos could be vulnerable to habitat degradation, though this has not been formally evaluated.
