Nannopetersius lamberti was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967, with the original description appearing in volume 118–122 of the Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale. The type locality is Pointe-Noire, in the Republic of Congo, and the holotype is deposited at the Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale (MRAC 153760). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Nannopetersius lamberti Poll, 1967, and the species is placed within the family Alestidae — the African tetras — in the subfamily Clupeocharacinae.
The genus Nannopetersius is a small genus within the Alestidae, a family that encompasses the majority of African characiform fishes. The subfamilial placement in Clupeocharacinae distinguishes it from the more familiar African tetras of the tribe Alestini. As with many Poll-era Congo Basin descriptions, the taxonomy of this group has been subject to ongoing revision, and the precise relationships of Nannopetersius within the Alestidae remain an active area of study.
