Taxonomy & naming
Nannopetersius mutambuei was described by Wamuini Lunkayilakio and E. Vreven in 2008, in a paper published in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 19, issue 4, pages 367–376). The type locality is the Inkski River basin in the lower Congo River drainage, Democratic Republic of Congo. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Nannopetersius mutambuei Wamuini Lunkayilakio & Vreven, 2008, placed in the family Alestidae — the African characids.
The genus Nannopetersius belongs to the diverse African tetra radiation within Alestidae, a family that accounts for the majority of African characiform diversity. The original description provides a formal morphological diagnosis that distinguishes the species from congeners by a combination of lateral-line scale counts (28–30 pored scales), a notably elongate caudal peduncle (length 135.7–151.7% of depth), 21–23 branched anal-fin rays, and a relatively large eye (31.7–39.6% of head length). WoRMS (World Register of Marine Species) independently confirms the family assignment and authority for this species.
Morphology
FishBase records the maximum standard length as 4.5 in SL, placing Nannopetersius mutambuei among the medium-sized African tetras. The original description characterises the species by a suite of meristic and proportional features: 28–30 lateral-line scales; 5.5–6.5 scales between the dorsal-fin origin and the lateral line; 21–23 branched anal-fin rays; and 10–13 gill rakers.
The caudal peduncle is distinctly elongate, its length measuring 135.7–151.7% of its depth — a feature that helps separate N. mutambuei from related species. The snout is proportionally modest (26.6–29.2% of head length), while the eye is comparatively large at 31.7–39.6% of head length. Preserved specimens display a black longitudinal band along the flank; this band is absent in living fish, which is a useful caution against interpreting colour pattern from museum material alone. Overall body form follows the typical alestid tetra plan: a moderately compressed, fusiform fish built for open-water life.
Habitat
The species is known exclusively from the Inkski River upstream of the Sanga dam, within the lower Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic, suggesting it occupies the lower to mid-water column rather than being strictly a surface or bottom dweller. The trophic level assigned by FishBase (3.1) is consistent with a generalist feeder.
Beyond the hydrological context — a tributarty of the vast Congo system, above an impoundment — detailed habitat data are not available in the published literature accessible from the original description and FishBase summary. The lower Congo Basin as a whole is characterised by highly oxygenated, often fast-flowing water in the main channel, with laterally connected floodplain and slower tributary habitats; the Inkski River likely shares properties of the broader lower Congo drainage but no site-specific water-chemistry measurements have been published for this species.
Feeding
No specific gut-content or foraging studies have been published for Nannopetersius mutambuei. The trophic level of 3.1 given by FishBase is consistent with an omnivorous or invertivorous diet, typical of many mid-sized alestid tetras that consume invertebrates, small crustaceans, and plant material in proportion to availability.
By analogy with other members of Alestidae of similar size and habitat, the species likely feeds opportunistically on aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface, and organic detritus. Detailed dietary data remain unpublished.
Mating
No direct observations of courtship or mating behaviour have been published for Nannopetersius mutambuei. As an alestid characin, the species is expected to follow the egg-scattering reproductive strategy general to the family: open-water or plant-associated spawning with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no pair bond, and no parental care.
The original description and subsequent literature provide no behavioural data. The species has not been reported in the aquarium hobby, so captive observations that might otherwise supplement wild data are also absent.
Breeding
Published breeding data for Nannopetersius mutambuei do not exist. Based on family-wide patterns in Alestidae, the reproductive mode is presumed to involve egg-scattering among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged structure, with adhesive eggs that receive no parental attention after deposition.
Incubation duration, clutch size, and fry behaviour are unknown. Because the species has not entered the aquarium trade, captive breeding records that would illuminate its reproductive biology are not available.
In the aquarium
Nannopetersius mutambuei is not established in the aquarium hobby. There are no hobbyist records, care guides, or trade reports for this species. It has not been collected for ornamental purposes and is known only from its type locality in the DRC.
Any aquarium maintenance parameters should, in the absence of site-specific data, follow general husbandry principles for medium-sized lower Congo Basin alestids: well-oxygenated, moderately soft to moderately hard water in the tropical range, with ample swimming space commensurate with a fish potentially reaching 4.5 in SL. Practically, this species is unavailable in the hobby and data are too sparse to offer meaningful care guidance.
Conservation
Nannopetersius mutambuei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known only from the Inkski River upstream of the Sanga dam — a restricted geographic range that, in principle, makes it vulnerable to any localised disturbance such as changes in dam operation, sedimentation, or pollution from land use in the catchment.
The Democratic Republic of Congo hosts exceptional freshwater biodiversity, particularly in the Congo Basin, but many narrowly endemic species in that system receive little conservation attention owing to limited survey effort and resources. No targeted study of population status or threats to N. mutambuei has been published, and the species' small known range merits formal assessment to determine whether heightened protection is warranted.
