The twostripe pencilfish is a slender, blackwater inhabitant of the upper Amazon basin, carrying a pair of dark horizontal stripes along a body rarely exceeding 1.5 in. Like its relatives in the genus Nannostomus, it is a slow-water specialist adapted to acidic, tannin-stained streams and still backwaters where cover is dense and current minimal. Its modest size and preference for dim, vegetation-rich conditions make it a demanding but rewarding fish for the specialist aquarist prepared to match its biotope requirements.

Taxonomy & naming

Nannostomus digrammus was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1913. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names in ichthyology, places the species in the genus Nannostomus within the family Lebiasinidae. Because the original description placed the species in a genus other than Nannostomus, the authority is cited in parentheses: (Fowler, 1913). The valid name has remained stable within Nannostomus, a genus of small, laterally compressed pencilfish native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America.

Nannostomus is one of the more species-rich genera in the Lebiasinidae, with members sharing a pencil-like body form, subdued but often precisely patterned coloration, and a preference for quiet, heavily vegetated waters. The genus is sometimes split into subgenera, but Nannostomus digrammus is consistently treated as a member of the core group. Its closest affinities within the genus remain incompletely resolved by molecular work, but its two-stripe pattern places it in a loose phenotypic cluster with other Amazonian species sharing similar horizontal banding.

Morphology

Nannostomus digrammus is a small, elongate fish with the compressed, almost cylindrical body typical of pencilfish. Maximum size is modest, with most individuals not exceeding approximately 1.5 in in total length, making it one of the smaller members of the genus. The body is pale yellowish to silvery, crossed by two distinct dark horizontal stripes running from near the snout to the caudal peduncle — the feature that gives the species both its common name and its specific epithet.

The upper stripe runs through or just above the lateral midline, and the lower stripe runs along the ventral portion of the flank. Between and below these stripes, the body is pale or lightly iridescent. The fins are generally clear to lightly pigmented, and the caudal fin may carry a small reddish patch in well-conditioned fish. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; females in breeding condition are visibly fuller-bodied than males, and males may show slightly brighter coloration, but the two sexes are otherwise similar in external appearance.

Habitat

Nannostomus digrammus is native to the upper Amazon basin, with records from Peru. It inhabits slow-moving to still waters — forest streams, marginal backwaters, and flooded-vegetation zones — that are typically shaded by overhanging canopy and characterized by dense aquatic or emergent plant growth. Leaf litter accumulates on the substrate and the water is often stained brown with tannins released by decaying organic material, giving the biotope its characteristic blackwater appearance.

These habitats are soft, highly acidic, and extremely low in dissolved minerals, with pH values that can fall well below 6 and hardness approaching zero. The combination of low light, abundant fine-leaved and floating vegetation, and still or barely perceptible current represents the environmental template to which Nannostomus digrammus and its close relatives are adapted. It is a near-surface and midwater species, typically encountered in the uppermost water column where cover from surface vegetation provides shelter from predators.

Feeding

In the wild, Nannostomus digrammus feeds on small invertebrates within the water column and at the surface — zooplankton, tiny crustaceans, insect larvae, and emerging insects are all likely components of the natural diet in its blackwater habitat. Its small mouth limits the size of prey items it can take, and its feeding is characteristically deliberate and precise rather than the bold, darting approach seen in larger characins.

In the aquarium the species accepts suitably sized prepared foods, but thrives best on a mixed diet that includes live and frozen items. Micro-invertebrates such as Daphnia, freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, Cyclops, and micro-worms are well suited to its mouth size and elicit strong feeding responses. Fine-grade crushed flake or micro-pellets can supplement a live diet. Consistent feeding of high-quality small foods maintains condition and encourages natural coloration and breeding behaviour.

Mating

Nannostomus digrammus is an egg-scattering open spawner in the manner typical of Lebiasinidae pencilfish. There is no pair bond and no parental care; breeding behaviour is opportunistic and can occur repeatedly when fish are well conditioned. Males court females with lateral displays, positioning alongside them and showing off body coloration. In a group, males may pursue females and compete briefly with one another, though inter-male aggression is mild.

Spawning takes place among fine-leaved aquatic plants or at the base of floating vegetation, where the pair or a male-following-female release small numbers of adhesive eggs that attach loosely to plant leaves or substrate. A single spawning event produces relatively few eggs, but fish in good condition may spawn frequently over extended periods. Because adults show no recognition of their eggs as offspring and will consume them readily, eggs are at risk from the moment of deposition and must be separated from the adults in a breeding situation.

Breeding

Breeding Nannostomus digrammus in the aquarium requires close attention to water chemistry and a dedicated setup that approximates the species' blackwater origins. Soft, acidic water — pH in the range of 5.5 to 6.5, with hardness below 5 dH — triggers spawning behaviour and improves egg fertility and hatching rates. Temperature in the upper range of the species' comfort zone, around 79–82 °F, helps bring conditioned fish into spawning readiness. The addition of peat filtration or dried Indian almond leaves to acidify and tint the water often proves beneficial.

A spawning tank furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, hornwort, or synthetic spawning mops provides suitable deposition sites for the adhesive eggs. Eggs should be harvested to a separate container or the adults removed after spawning is observed, as they will eat the eggs. Incubation takes roughly 48 to 72 hours at breeding temperatures. The fry are tiny on hatching and require infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods for the first week before they can accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is slow and the juveniles remain delicate for several weeks.

In the aquarium

Nannostomus digrammus is best suited to a species-specific or carefully matched community aquarium that replicates the blackwater biotope of its native range. A well-planted nano or small tank of 10 US gal or more, furnished with fine-leaved plants, floating cover, driftwood, and leaf litter, provides the subdued lighting and shelter the species requires. Gentle filtration that maintains water movement without creating significant current is appropriate — a sponge filter run at low flow is ideal.

Water chemistry is non-negotiable for long-term success: soft, acidic water in the range of pH 5.5 to 6.8 and hardness below 5 dH is necessary. The species does not adapt well to hard or alkaline conditions and will decline in water that does not match its natural parameters. Temperature should be maintained between 24 and 82 °F. As a small, slow-moving fish with a non-aggressive disposition, it is vulnerable to competition and fin-nipping from faster, larger, or boisterous tankmates; it does best kept with similarly sized, gentle species such as small rasboras, dwarf corydoras, or other Nannostomus. A group of six or more individuals reduces stress and encourages natural schooling behaviour. The species is considered moderately challenging due to its water chemistry requirements.

Conservation

Nannostomus digrammus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no current threat category. Most small Lebiasinidae of the Amazon basin remain unevaluated despite belonging to habitats that face ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural run-off, and degradation of the blackwater stream systems they depend on. The loss of riparian forest cover in parts of the Peruvian Amazon directly degrades the shaded, leaf-litter-rich watercourses these fish occupy by altering hydrology, water chemistry, and the input of organic material that maintains the blackwater conditions.

The species does appear in the ornamental fish trade, sourced primarily from wild-caught stock taken from its Amazonian range. Sustainable sourcing practices and the development of captive breeding populations would reduce pressure on wild populations, though the commercial incentive for aquaculture of a small, slow-growing, and water-chemistry-demanding species is limited. Aquarists maintaining the species are encouraged to work toward captive propagation and to source from established captive-bred lines wherever they are available.
