Nannostomus eques is one of the most distinctive members of the pencilfish family, a slender inhabitant of the Rio Negro basin that holds its body at a pronounced upward angle rather than swimming horizontally — an unusual posture that has earned it the common names rocket pencilfish and tubemouth pencilfish alongside the more prosaic brown pencilfish. It is an undemanding blackwater species that breeds in an atypical way for the group, depositing adhesive eggs on the underside of broad plant leaves rather than scattering them freely.

Taxonomy & naming

Nannostomus eques was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1876, placing it among the earliest-described members of what would become a species-rich pencilfish genus. The genus Nannostomus belongs to the family Lebiasinidae within the order Characiformes, grouping the pencilfishes and their relatives in a family distinct from the broader tetra assemblage.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Nannostomus eques Steindachner, 1876 as the valid name. The species has accumulated a number of synonyms over its taxonomic history and has appeared under names such as Nannobrycon eques and Poecilobrycon eques in older literature; Nannostomus is the currently accepted genus. A molecular study by Porto and colleagues (2012) examined the mitochondrial D-loop across populations of N. eques in the Rio Negro basin and detected at least two evolutionarily distinct lineages within what has historically been treated as a single species — a finding that could have future implications for taxonomy and for conservation management of collection localities.

Morphology

The brown pencilfish is a slim, elongate fish typical of the pencilfish body plan, reaching approximately 1.5 in in total length under aquarium conditions. The snout is slightly upturned and the mouth is directed upward, an adaptation linked to the species' habit of feeding at and near the water surface. The body is pale brown to tan with a bold dark-brown lateral stripe running from the snout through the eye to the base of the caudal fin, where it expands into a prominent dark blotch. A second, thinner stripe often runs below the main band along the lower flank.

The fish's most immediately recognisable behaviour is its resting posture: individuals habitually angle their bodies upward, often at 30–45 degrees from horizontal, so that the snout points toward the surface. This oblique stance, shared with a few other Nannostomus species, makes N. eques easy to identify at a glance in a mixed pencilfish collection. The caudal fin carries a characteristic dark lower lobe that contributes to the 'diptail' common name. Males and females are similarly marked, though females are typically plumper in the body when in spawning condition.

Habitat

Nannostomus eques is native to the Rio Negro basin of Brazil, one of the world's great blackwater river systems draining the northern Amazon lowlands. The Rio Negro and its tributaries are characterised by water that is strongly acidic, extremely soft, and stained dark amber-brown by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leached from leaf litter and decaying organic matter. These conditions produce a remarkably clear but tea-coloured water column with very low conductivity, low pH, and minimal dissolved minerals.

Within this system, N. eques favours shallow, slow-moving or still marginal habitats: flooded forest edges, igapó inundation zones, side channels, and areas with dense stands of aquatic or emergent vegetation and accumulated leaf litter. The broken light filtering through forest canopy and the dense tannin staining of the water create dim, soft-lit conditions that the species is well adapted to. Water temperatures across the Rio Negro basin are warm year-round, generally in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, with pH often below 5 in the most blackwater reaches.

Feeding

Nannostomus eques is a micropredator and surface feeder, with its upturned mouth and oblique posture well suited to picking small prey from the water surface film or from leaves and stems in the upper water column. In nature the diet consists primarily of small invertebrates — micro-crustaceans, insects, insect larvae, and zooplankton — alongside any organic particles available at the surface.

In the aquarium it accepts a variety of small prepared foods and relishes live or frozen micro-foods. Newly hatched brine shrimp, Daphnia, micro-worm, and Cyclops nauplii are excellent dietary staples that encourage natural foraging behaviour and maintain good condition. Because of the fish's small mouth and preference for feeding near the surface, sinking pellets or foods that disperse quickly before the fish can access them are less suitable; finely crushed flake floated on the surface or foods delivered in small doses work better. A varied diet improves colour, vitality, and breeding readiness.

Mating

Nannostomus eques has one of the more unusual spawning strategies among the pencilfishes. Rather than scattering eggs freely into vegetation or onto the substrate, males and females place adhesive eggs on the underside of broad plant leaves — a behaviour that sets the species apart from many of its congeners and suggests some degree of selected egg placement rather than purely random scatter.

Courting males pursue females through vegetation with fin-spreading displays, and pairs angle upward together toward the chosen spawning site. The oblique body posture characteristic of the species is especially pronounced during spawning, with both fish orienting nearly vertically beneath a leaf to deposit and fertilise eggs. Pairs typically spawn in small batches of eggs over several sessions rather than all at once.

Breeding

Breeding Nannostomus eques in captivity is achievable but somewhat more demanding than for hardier pencilfish species, primarily because the species requires authentic soft-acid conditions to spawn reliably. A dedicated breeding setup should use reconstituted RO water or naturally soft water acidified to pH 5.5–6.5 with tannin-rich blackwater extract or peat filtration; very hard or alkaline water inhibits spawning and egg viability.

The tank should include broad-leaved plants — Anubias and similar species are commonly used — or broad artificial substitutes, as eggs are deposited on the underside of leaves. Adults are egg-eaters and should be removed or separated from the spawning site once eggs are noticed. The small, adhesive eggs hatch after roughly two to three days at typical breeding temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius. Fry are tiny and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Gentle, air-driven sponge filtration is essential in the rearing tank to avoid current that exhausts or injures the fragile fry.

In the aquarium

Nannostomus eques is a peaceful, slow-moving fish that does best in a species tank or a carefully chosen community of similarly placid, small, blackwater-adapted fishes — small corydoras, dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma, or other Nannostomus species are compatible companions. It is timid and easily outcompeted at feeding; boisterous, fast-moving tankmates will stress it and cause it to hide permanently.

Water chemistry is the most important husbandry consideration: the species is a genuine blackwater fish and fares poorly in hard, alkaline, or poorly conditioned water. Soft, acidic conditions (pH 5.5–7.0; very low to negligible hardness) with the addition of blackwater extract, catappa leaves, or peat filtration replicate the Rio Negro environment and bring fish into their best colour and condition. Temperatures of 75–82 °F suit it well. Tank decor should include subdued lighting, floating plants or surface cover to diffuse light, a dark substrate, and dense planting or driftwood to provide security. The oblique resting posture and surface-skimming behaviour make the fish most interesting when viewed from the front in a well-planted tank with calm surface water.

Conservation

Nannostomus eques has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is currently considered Not Evaluated (NE). The species is commercially collected from the Rio Negro basin for the ornamental fish trade, where it is a perennial offering under its various pencilfish common names. The Rio Negro, though large, is not without threat: deforestation, mining activity, and land-use changes in its catchment have degraded marginal habitats of the kind this species occupies.

The molecular work of Porto and colleagues (2012) highlighting at least two distinct evolutionary lineages within the Rio Negro population adds a layer of conservation relevance that has not yet been formally addressed in any IUCN assessment. If those lineages are confirmed as separate management units or species, collection pressure on any single lineage could be more significant than population-level estimates would suggest. Most aquarium specimens are likely wild-caught, as captive breeding is possible but not yet widespread in the trade; hobbyist breeding reduces demand on wild populations and preserves the genetic diversity that the molecular data suggest is present.
