Taxonomy & naming
Odontostilbe avanhandava was described by Chuctaya, Bührnheim & Malabarba in 2018. The type locality lies within the Avanhandava region of the upper Rio Tietê system in São Paulo state, Brazil — a drainage that has been intensively surveyed for small characids and continues to yield new species. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; because the species was described directly into Odontostilbe, no parenthetical is applied to the authority.
Odontostilbe is placed in the subfamily Stevardiinae of the family Characidae, a group of small to medium characins distributed widely across South America, particularly in Andean piedmont and Brazilian shield river systems. The genus has historically been confused with Cheirodon and related cheirodontine genera, but molecular and morphological work has clarified its position and revealed substantial undescribed diversity. O. avanhandava was distinguished from its congeners on the basis of a combination of meristic and morphometric characters, as is typical for new Odontostilbe descriptions.
No common name has been formally applied to the species in the aquarium hobby.
Morphology
Odontostilbe avanhandava is a small, elongate characid with the typical body plan of the genus: a moderately compressed, fusiform profile, a small terminal mouth bearing a few simple to bicuspid teeth, and the family's hallmark adipose fin. Precise size data for the species are sparse in the available literature, but members of Odontostilbe typically reach 1–2 in standard length, with this species falling within that range based on its type series.
Lateral coloration in life features a relatively distinct dark lateral stripe running from the head toward the caudal peduncle, a pattern shared by many Odontostilbe species. The caudal peduncle spot, when present, is connected to or merges with the lateral stripe. Overall body coloration is silvery with variable yellowish to pale golden tones; the fins are largely hyaline. Sexual dichromatism is subtle, as in most congeners.
Diagnostic characters used to separate O. avanhandava from other members of the genus include scale counts along the lateral line, the number of predorsal scales, and proportions of head and body length — characters best evaluated from fixed specimens and described formally in the original description.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper Rio Tietê drainage in São Paulo state, one of the major river systems of southeastern Brazil flowing westward to the Paraná. The Avanhandava area has been subject to extensive hydrological modification, including reservoirs; the original habitats of the type series would have comprised moderate-gradient, clear to slightly turbid tributaries and streams with sandy or rocky substrates, patches of riparian vegetation, and seasonally variable flows.
Like other small Odontostilbe species, O. avanhandava likely occupies the water column of streams and small rivers, often in loose shoals in open water or near the margins where current and vegetation provide foraging opportunities. Precise habitat measurements for water temperature, pH, and conductivity at the type locality are not available in the accessed literature, but upper Tietê tributaries in São Paulo are generally warm (75–82 °F), circumneutral to slightly acidic, and of moderate hardness, reflecting the region's varied geology.
Feeding
Odontostilbe species are generalist micropredators and microalgivores; the genus as a whole feeds on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — as well as algae and organic detritus depending on local availability. O. avanhandava is assumed to follow this guild given its body form, mouth position, and tooth morphology, though specific gut-content data for this species are not available in the literature accessed.
In the aquarium, related Odontostilbe species accept small commercial flake and micro-pellet foods readily, as well as live and frozen foods such as newly hatched Artemia, Daphnia, and fine tubifex. A varied diet is advisable for bringing the fish into good condition. Their small mouth size means that food particle size matters; oversized food items will be ignored or spat out.
Mating
No specific mating observations have been published for O. avanhandava, but the genus Odontostilbe follows the broad characid pattern of egg-scattering with no parental investment. Males in closely related species are typically the more active sex in courtship, pursuing females with lateral-display postures and driving spawning over fine substrate or vegetation.
In the wild, spawning in southeastern Brazilian stream fishes is often linked to the onset of the austral spring and early wet season (September–November), when rising water temperatures and increased flow trigger reproductive activity. Adhesive or non-adhesive eggs are scattered over substrate or plant matter and subsequently abandoned by both parents.
Breeding
Captive breeding of O. avanhandava has not been documented in the hobby literature consulted. By analogy with other small Odontostilbe and Stevardiinae tetras, a pair or small group conditioned on live and frozen foods and moved to a separate, densely planted breeding tank at temperatures of 77–81 °F should spawn over fine-leaved plants or a substrate of Java moss. Eggs are small and adhesive; hatching occurs within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and fry are free-swimming within a few additional days.
Adults will consume their own eggs and fry, so removing parents after spawning or transferring egg-bearing plant clumps is standard practice. First foods for fry should be infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fish grow. Given the species' small adult size, the fry are correspondingly tiny and require fine-grained husbandry.
In the aquarium
Odontostilbe avanhandava is not an established aquarium species, and captive stock is not known to be in regular commercial circulation. It was described from scientific collecting expeditions and has not appeared in the ornamental trade literature. Any specimens held in captivity would likely originate from ichthyological research collections or incidental aquarium import alongside other small Brazilian tetras.
For aquarists who do obtain the species, the husbandry template for small Stevardiinae applies: a moderately sized tank with gentle to moderate filtration, soft-to-neutral water chemistry, fine substrate, and areas of aquatic planting to provide cover and spawning sites. A group of six or more will show more natural shoaling behaviour than isolated individuals. Given its provenance from subtropical to tropical São Paulo drainages, temperatures of 72–81 °F are appropriate. It should be kept with similarly small, peaceful tankmates.
Conservation
Odontostilbe avanhandava has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described in 2018 from a single drainage region, it is not yet present in the standard conservation databases, which is typical for recently described small South American characids.
The upper Rio Tietê has been heavily impacted by the development of São Paulo state — including damming for hydroelectric power, agricultural runoff, urban effluent, and significant habitat degradation. The Avanhandava area itself has been affected by reservoir construction. Whether the species retains viable populations across the altered landscape is not documented. Its restricted known range and the degree of anthropogenic modification in its catchment suggest that future IUCN assessment would benefit from targeted field surveys to determine the extent and health of remaining populations.
