Odontostilbe fugitiva is a small, slender characid of the Amazonian lowlands, reaching just over 1.5 in in total length and spending most of its life in the midwater column of slow-flowing and still-water habitats across much of the Amazon basin. Originally described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1870 from the upper Amazon drainage, it became the type species of the genus Odontostilbe and acquired a complex synonymy — four formerly separate species were folded into it during a comprehensive 2006 revision by Vari and Ortega — making it one of the most widely distributed members of the subfamily Cheirodontinae. Its original type specimen was lost; a neotype from the río Mazán in Loreto, Peru has since been designated to anchor the name.

Taxonomy & naming

Odontostilbe fugitiva was described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1870 in the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, becoming the founding species of the genus Odontostilbe and thereby the type species of a cheirodontine lineage that now encompasses several Neotropical small characids. Cope's original type material from the upper Amazon region was subsequently lost; a neotype (MUSM 27501) was later designated from the río Mazán, a tributary of the upper río Amazonas in Loreto, Peru, to stabilise the name.

The species carries a substantial synonymy. A 2006 revision by Vari and Ortega comprehensively redescribed O. fugitiva and demonstrated that four previously recognised taxa — O. madeirae, O. drepanon, O. caquetae, and at least one other form — fell within its range of variation and are now treated as junior synonyms. This consolidation substantially expanded the species' perceived geographic range and highlighted the difficulty of drawing species limits in a group of small, morphologically similar stream tetras. The valid name as recognised in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Odontostilbe fugitiva Cope, 1870, placed in family Characidae, subfamily Cheirodontinae.

Morphology

Odontostilbe fugitiva is a slender, small-bodied characid with a maximum recorded total length of approximately 1.5 in, based on FishBase data. The body form is typical of the Cheirodontinae: elongate and moderately compressed, with a small but distinct adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and the fine-toothed jaw dentition that gives the genus its name (Greek: odonto- tooth, stilbe relating to brightness or glitter).

Live colouration is not well documented in the literature, but as in most cheirodontines the fish is primarily silvery, often with a faint lateral stripe and variable amounts of pigment along the midline and around the eye. Sexual dimorphism is subtle and not extensively characterised for this species in the available literature; size differences between sexes, if present, are modest, as is typical in small characids of this subfamily.

Habitat

Odontostilbe fugitiva occurs throughout a large portion of the Amazon River basin, with confirmed records from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic in freshwater, inhabiting the lower water column of rivers and associated still or slow-flowing waters including lakes, lagoons, and flooded areas. It is a lowland species, most frequently recorded from the white-water and clear-water systems of the central and upper Amazon drainage.

Reported water-parameter tolerances span a moderately wide range: pH 5.8–7.5 and hardness up to approximately 20 dH, with temperatures of 72–79 °F. These figures encompass the diversity of habitats across such a large basin and reflect the broad distributional range consolidated by the 2006 Vari and Ortega revision rather than a single habitat preference. In practice, the species likely shows local variation in preference across its range.

Feeding

Like other cheirodontine characids, Odontostilbe fugitiva is an omnivore that feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, and organic particles in the midwater column. The fine multicuspid teeth of the Cheirodontinae are well suited to grasping small prey items and processing plant material, and the group as a whole tends toward a diet mixing animal and vegetable matter in roughly equal proportion depending on availability.

Detailed dietary studies for this species are not available in the published literature accessible from the cache. Based on comparative data for congeners and the broader cheirodontine guild, the species likely takes aquatic invertebrate larvae, small crustaceans, algal filaments, and fine organic detritus. In the aquarium it would be expected to accept fine-grade prepared foods, small live or frozen invertebrates, and finely ground flake.

Mating

Odontostilbe fugitiva, as a characid of the subfamily Cheirodontinae, reproduces by open egg-scattering typical of the broader family. No detailed behavioural studies of courtship or spawning in this species are available in the sources reviewed. In other cheirodontine and small characid species, males typically pursue females and spawning occurs in bursts, often associated with fine-leaved vegetation or other dense substrate into which the adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered.

No parental care is expected or documented; as with the great majority of characids, adults show no guarding or tending of eggs or larvae once spawning is complete. Spawning readiness in captivity is generally triggered by good conditioning on live and varied foods combined with a water-change stimulus to simulate the onset of the rainy season.

Breeding

Detailed captive-breeding accounts for Odontostilbe fugitiva are sparse in the hobby literature, in part because the species is not widely traded under this name and has only recently been consolidated from previously separate taxa. The general approach applicable to small cheirodontine characids would apply: condition adults on varied live and frozen foods, provide fine-leaved plants or a synthetic spawning mop, and conduct a partial water change with slightly cooler water to stimulate spawning activity.

Eggs are adhesive and should be removed from adults promptly to prevent predation. Incubation at typical tropical temperatures of 75–79 °F would be expected to yield fry within a few days. First foods for the tiny larvae should be infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Growth rate and time to sexual maturity are not documented for this species in the available literature.

In the aquarium

Odontostilbe fugitiva is an uncommon species in the ornamental trade and is rarely imported specifically under this name; when it does appear, it is generally collected as a bycatch alongside other small tetras from Peruvian or Brazilian Amazon shipments. Its small adult size — just over 1.5 in — and peaceful disposition make it suitable for a community aquarium with similarly small, non-aggressive tankmates such as other small tetras, dwarf corydoras, and small rasboras.

Water chemistry should reflect its Amazonian origins: soft to moderately hard water (up to about 20 dH), pH in the range 5.8–7.5, and temperatures of 72–79 °F. It is a schooling species and should be kept in groups of six or more to allow natural social behaviour. A planted aquarium with some open midwater swimming space and subdued lighting suits it well. Because it is rarely available, there is little hobby-specific husbandry literature; keepers should apply the general care framework for soft-water Amazonian tetras.

Conservation

Odontostilbe fugitiva is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded by FishBase as of March 2021. This status reflects the species' wide distribution across the Amazon basin — spanning Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru — and the absence of any identified major threat causing rapid population decline across its range.

The very broad distribution consolidated by the Vari and Ortega (2006) revision substantially underpins this assessment; what had previously appeared to be several restricted-range species is now understood as one wide-ranging taxon. No specific conservation measures are known to be in place for this species, nor are they considered necessary at present. Ongoing threats to Amazonian freshwater fish in general — including deforestation, agricultural runoff, and dam construction — apply to this species as they do to most of the Amazonian ichthyofauna, but no population-level impacts specific to O. fugitiva have been documented.
