Phenacogrammus polli is a small, slender alestid tetra reaching about 1.5 in total length, native to the blackwater river systems of the Congo Basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Described by J. G. Lambert in 1961 from specimens collected in the Cuvette Centrale — the vast inland swamp at the heart of the Congo watershed — the species inhabits the Ruki River drainage, the Lomami River, and the Lindi-Tshopo catchment, all draining through some of the darkest, most organic-rich water on Earth. It is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby and has not been formally assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogrammus polli was described by the Belgian ichthyologist J. G. Lambert in 1961 in a contribution on the forest fishes of the Congolese Cuvette, published in the Annales of the Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale at Tervuren (Série in 8°, Sciences Zoologiques, No. 93). The type locality is recorded as Congo, Cuvette Centrale. The valid name as accepted by the Catalog of Fishes is Phenacogrammus polli Lambert, 1961; the author is not placed in parentheses, as the species was described in the genus Phenacogrammus where it remains.

The genus Phenacogrammus belongs to the family Alestidae — the African tetras — and includes the well-known Congo tetra, P. interruptus. P. polli is one of the smaller, less frequently studied members of the genus, with relatively little published aquarium or ecological literature devoted specifically to it. Its placement within Phenacogrammus reflects the broad genus-level taxonomy of the African alestids, a group whose internal relationships have been revised multiple times and which remains the subject of ongoing phylogenetic work.

Morphology

Phenacogrammus polli is a small, streamlined alestid, recorded at up to 1.5 in total length — making it considerably smaller than the familiar Congo tetra (P. interruptus, which can exceed 3 in). The body form follows the typical Phenacogrammus plan: moderately compressed laterally, with a fairly pointed snout, a single dorsal fin positioned roughly over the pelvic insertion, and an adipose fin present as in all characiform fishes.

Detailed colour descriptions specific to P. polli are sparse in the accessible literature. African alestids of this size and habitat are typically silvery to pale yellowish with a lateral stripe or band of iridescent silver, and often show some degree of finnage colour in males. Until more detailed published descriptions or photographic documentation of live specimens become widely available, specific colouration beyond these general features should be treated with caution.

Habitat

Phenacogrammus polli is recorded from the Ruki River drainage, the Lomami River, and the Lindi-Tshopo River system — all lying within the Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The type locality in the Cuvette Centrale places it at the geographic heart of this vast drainage, in the lowland rainforest zone. The species is described as benthopelagic and strictly freshwater.

The Ruki River is among the darkest blackwater rivers on Earth, heavily stained with dissolved humic and fulvic acids leaching from the surrounding rainforest soils. Water conditions in such drainages are typically very soft, acidic, and low in dissolved minerals — pH values in the 5.5 to 6.5 range are characteristic of Congo Basin blackwater, conductivity is extremely low, and temperatures in the shaded forest interior tend to be warm but not extreme, roughly 73–81 °F. These parameters are inferred from habitat type; specific measurements for the precise collection sites of P. polli are not documented in the available sources.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies of Phenacogrammus polli are available in the accessible literature. Members of the genus Phenacogrammus and the broader Alestidae family are generally considered opportunistic omnivores, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and plant or algal matter in proportion to availability. The related P. interruptus is known to feed on insects, crustaceans, plant debris, and algae in the wild.

In the aquarium, fish of this genus typically accept a wide range of small prepared and live foods: fine flake or micro-pellets, newly hatched brine shrimp, Daphnia, and similar fare scaled to their small mouth size. Given the species' rarity in captivity, there is limited hobbyist documentation of its specific feeding preferences or behaviour.

Mating

No published spawning observations specific to Phenacogrammus polli are available in the accessible literature. By analogy with other members of the genus and with Alestidae generally, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged plant debris, without any form of parental care.

In the well-documented Congo tetra (P. interruptus), males display extended finnage and iridescent colouration to court females, with spawning occurring in open water or over vegetation in soft, acidic conditions. Whether P. polli shows similar display behaviours is undocumented. The small body size suggests that any courtship and spawning dynamics are correspondingly compact, but specific observations have not been recorded in the literature examined.

Breeding

Phenacogrammus polli is rarely if ever kept or bred in captivity, and no detailed breeding accounts have been located in the available literature. Based on the biology of congeners, particularly P. interruptus, eggs would be expected to be small and adhesive, scattered among fine-leaved plants or over open substrate, hatching within a few days at tropical temperatures. Adults would not be expected to guard eggs or fry.

For any keeper fortunate enough to obtain the species, conditioning in soft, warm, acidic water in line with the blackwater habitat parameters described above would be the logical starting point. Separating eggs from the adults promptly after spawning, and raising fry on the finest available foods, would follow the standard protocol for small alestid tetras. In the absence of documented captive breeding records, specifics of clutch size, incubation duration, and fry development remain unknown.

In the aquarium

Phenacogrammus polli is a very rare species in the aquarium hobby, seldom appearing in trade or hobbyist literature. Should it become available, its small size (1.5 in TL) and presumed blackwater habitat affinities suggest it would suit a heavily planted, soft-water biotope aquarium replicating Congo Basin forest conditions: warm (75–81 °F), very soft and acidic water (pH around 5.5–6.5), low conductivity, dim lighting diffused through floating plants or leaf litter, and dark substrate. A school of at least six to eight individuals would be appropriate given the schooling tendency of alestid tetras.

Tankmates, if any, should be of comparable size and similarly adapted to blackwater conditions — other small Congo Basin tetras, small loricariid catfishes, or diminutive African dwarf cichlids would be in keeping. Because the species is so rarely documented in captivity, keepers encountering it should consider recording water parameters, feeding responses, and any observed spawning behaviour, as such observations would constitute a genuine contribution to knowledge of the species.

Conservation

Phenacogrammus polli has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; no dedicated conservation assessment with a numeric taxon ID was located in the available sources, and no assessment year or category has been assigned. The species' status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE) by international criteria.

The Congo Basin, where P. polli occurs, is under increasing pressure from deforestation, artisanal mining, and agricultural expansion, all of which degrade the acidic, low-conductivity blackwater conditions on which species like this depend. The Ruki and Lomami river systems fall within the broader Congo rainforest — one of the world's largest remaining tropical forest blocks — but local-scale habitat change can still affect specialist small-bodied species that may have restricted ranges within the basin. Without a formal assessment of distribution, population trends, and habitat condition, the conservation standing of P. polli remains unknown.
