Phenacogrammus aurantiacus is a silvery, dark-banded characid from the Congo Basin and neighbouring Atlantic-draining river systems of central Africa. Though less frequently encountered in the aquarium trade than its close relative the Congo tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus), it shares the same broad-bodied, benthopelagic lifestyle and preference for soft, slightly acidic water near vegetated river margins. Described by Pellegrin in 1930, it remains one of the few members of Phenacogrammus documented from the Kouilou and Ogooué drainages as well as the Congo River itself.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogrammus aurantiacus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1930. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, carries a parenthetical authority — (Pellegrin, 1930) — indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus and subsequently moved to Phenacogrammus. The genus Phenacogrammus belongs to the family Alestidae, the African tetras, which encompasses most of the larger characiform fishes native to sub-Saharan Africa.

Within Phenacogrammus, the species is part of a cluster of closely related Congo Basin alestids. P. aurantiacus has historically been treated as a valid species distinct from P. interruptus, with which it broadly overlaps in range; the two can be confused in trade and in collections, and taxonomic revisions of the genus have not always agreed on their boundaries. The Catalog of Fishes currently recognises P. aurantiacus as valid.

Morphology

Phenacogrammus aurantiacus is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed characid reaching up to 4 in total length. The overall body colour is silvery, typically with a conspicuous dark mid-lateral band running from behind the head to the base of the caudal fin — a pattern shared with several congeners and responsible for some of the confusion in identification. The fins are largely transparent to lightly pigmented.

Like other members of Phenacogrammus, males likely develop elongated fin rays — particularly in the central caudal lobe — at maturity, a feature prominent in P. interruptus and common in the genus. The lateral line is complete. Precise meristic data for the species are not well documented in readily available sources, and formal comparisons with P. interruptus require examination of voucher specimens.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the Congo River basin and from the Atlantic-draining Kouilou and Ogooué river systems in the Republic of Congo and Gabon, placing it across a broader geographic range than many of its relatives. Within these drainages it occupies freshwater lowland habitats and is classified as benthopelagic, moving through the lower and mid-water column rather than being strictly benthic or surface-oriented.

In line with what is known for the genus from the Biotope Aquarium Project and related sources, P. aurantiacus likely inhabits slow-flowing to still reaches near river edges, among marginal vegetation, submerged leaf litter, and driftwood, in soft to slightly acidic water. Water temperatures across its range run approximately 73–82 °F and pH from around 6.0 to 7.5. It is a shoaling species, moving in groups in open or semi-structured water.

Feeding

Phenacogrammus aurantiacus is an opportunistic omnivore. Natural feeding across the genus typically encompasses insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and organic biofilm, with food taken in the water column and from the surface. The benthopelagic disposition of the species suggests it also forages near the substrate, picking up invertebrates stirred from leaf litter.

In the aquarium, congeners such as P. interruptus accept a wide range of prepared and live foods, and P. aurantiacus can be managed similarly: good-quality flake or micro-pellets supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Live and frozen foods improve colour and conditioning, particularly when breeding is desired.

Mating

Phenacogrammus aurantiacus is an egg-scattering open spawner. No parental care is provided; adults ignore or consume eggs once spawning is complete. In common with other Phenacogrammus, spawning behaviour centres on courtship displays between males and receptive females, with males likely using fin-extension and body posturing to attract mates.

Spawning takes place among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over soft substrates. The species, like its near relatives, is not a seasonal breeder under stable captive conditions and will attempt to spawn whenever water quality and diet are adequate. Conditioning with live or frozen foods promotes spawning readiness.

Breeding

Documented captive breeding data specific to P. aurantiacus are sparse, but the Biotope Aquarium Project records spawning producing approximately 200 eggs per spawn, with eggs hatching in around six days under favourable conditions. This is broadly consistent with the breeding biology of P. interruptus and other shoaling African tetras.

Eggs are adhesive and are scattered over fine-leaved plants or substrate. Because adults readily eat the eggs, breeders should remove the spawning medium or the adults after spawning is observed. At typical breeding temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, larvae emerge after roughly six days and become free-swimming shortly thereafter. First foods should be very fine — infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and microworms. Growth to juvenile size is relatively steady under clean-water, well-fed conditions.

In the aquarium

Phenacogrammus aurantiacus is an uncommon but manageable aquarium fish suited to a well-planted, soft-water community setup. It is a shoaling species and does best kept in groups of six or more, which reduces skittishness and encourages natural schooling behaviour. A spacious tank with open swimming lanes and some peripheral planting replicates its river-edge habitat and gives the school room to move.

Water conditions should be soft and slightly acidic: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 73–82 °F, low to moderate hardness. The species does not tolerate poor water quality, so regular partial water changes and adequate biological filtration are important. Subdued lighting with some leaf-litter or tannin-stained water suits it, though good colour and health also come from attentive feeding. Peaceful tankmates of similar size — other African tetras, small peaceful catfishes, or similarly soft-water community fishes — are appropriate. Because the species is infrequently traded, captive-bred stock is rarely available; wild-caught individuals may need a period of careful acclimatisation.

Conservation

Phenacogrammus aurantiacus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a reasonably wide distribution across the Congo Basin and Atlantic-draining river systems of central Africa and no documented major threats driving population decline at the species level. Its range spans multiple major river systems, which provides some buffer against localised habitat loss.

Nonetheless, the Congo Basin as a whole faces increasing pressure from deforestation, small-scale mining, and water extraction, and species-level monitoring of less prominent characids in this region remains limited. The species' infrequent appearance in the aquarium trade means hobbyist awareness of it is low, and formal population assessments are not regularly repeated. Its LC status should be read as a reflection of current data rather than an assurance of long-term security.
