Taxonomy & naming
Priocharax britzi was described by Mattox, de Souza, Toledo-Piza, and Oliveira in Neotropical Ichthyology 19(2), 2021. The holotype (MZUSP 125822, a male of 0.5 in SL) was collected from a small lake roughly 1312 ft from the rio Ipixuna, near the right side of the Transamazônica Road (BR-230), municipality of Canutama, Amazonas, Brazil. The rio Ipixuna drains into the upper rio Purus system.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid name as Priocharax britzi Mattox, Souza, Toledo-Piza & Oliveira, 2021, placed in the family Characidae. Priocharax is a genus of miniature, paedomorphic characids found across the Amazon and Orinoco basins; nine species are currently recognised, including P. ariel, P. conwayi, P. marupiara, P. nanus, P. phasma, P. pygmaeus, P. toledopizae, and P. varii. Molecular support for the new species came from cytochrome oxidase I (COI) sequences.
The new species was distinguished from its congeners by a combination of lower tooth counts — 21–30 teeth on the maxilla and 26–29 on the dentary — along with the presence of two postcleithra and 22–27 branched anal-fin rays, characters that differentiate it from all previously described Priocharax.
Morphology
Priocharax britzi is an extremely small characid; the holotype measured 0.5 in standard length, placing it among the tiniest members of the family. Like other Priocharax species, it shows strongly paedomorphic features — skeletal elements that are reduced or absent, fewer fin rays than related larger characids, and a diminished laterosensory system — traits that characterise the genus as a whole rather than being unique to this species.
Diagnostic features separating P. britzi from congeners include a relatively low maxillary tooth count (21–30) and dentary tooth count (26–29), the presence of two postcleithra, and 22–27 branched anal-fin rays. The benthopelagic lifestyle and occurrence over muddy substrate with leaf litter suggest a small, somewhat dorsoventrally flattened body form well adapted to foraging near the bottom in still, shallow water, though detailed external colour descriptions for live specimens are not on record.
Habitat
The only known locality for Priocharax britzi is a small oxbow-style lake measuring approximately 49 ft by 115 ft, situated roughly 1312 ft from the channel of the rio Ipixuna in the municipality of Canutama, Amazonas State, Brazil. The species was collected at 2–3 ft depth over a muddy bottom with leaf litter — conditions typical of the still, humic backwaters associated with lowland Amazonian floodplain environments in the upper Purus drainage.
No water chemistry data (temperature, pH, conductivity) specific to the type locality have been published. The surrounding habitat is lowland Amazonian rainforest. Because the species is known from a single small water body, virtually nothing can be said about habitat breadth or seasonal variation in occupancy.
Feeding
No dietary study of Priocharax britzi has been published. FishBase assigns the species a trophic level of 3.0, consistent with a generalist invertebrate feeder — typical for miniature characids of this size that forage near the substrate on small invertebrates, zooplankton, microcrustaceans, and organic detritus in leaf-litter environments.
Other Priocharax species are similarly small-mouthed, bottom-associated feeders, and it is reasonable to infer that P. britzi targets tiny invertebrates and organic particles at or near the muddy substrate of its shallow lake habitat. Data on feeding behaviour are sparse given that the species has not been maintained in aquaria or subjected to gut-content analysis.
Mating
No specific observations of reproductive behaviour in Priocharax britzi have been published. Characids of this size range are generally egg-scatterers with no parental care, depositing small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or leaf litter in still or slow-moving water.
Given the shallow, heavily vegetated and leaf-littered nature of the type-locality lake, spawning likely occurs among substrate debris or fine plant growth. Whether the species aggregates seasonally in relation to the Amazonian flood pulse — as many small Amazonian characids do — is unknown. Data on clutch size, incubation time, and fry development have not been recorded.
Breeding
Priocharax britzi has not been bred in captivity, and no breeding data are available in the primary literature. The species has not appeared in the aquarium trade in any documented quantity, so hobbyist breeding records do not exist.
By analogy with other miniature Amazonian characids, breeding would be expected to involve scattering small, adhesive eggs with no subsequent parental care. The very small adult size would necessitate correspondingly tiny fry foods — infusoria-grade live foods — should the species ever become available for captive reproduction. Until the species is collected and maintained alive, all breeding inferences remain speculative.
In the aquarium
Priocharax britzi does not appear in the aquarium hobby and is not commercially available. It was described from a single small lake in a remote part of Amazonas State, and no aquarium imports have been documented. Its extreme small size — holotype 0.5 in SL — and highly restricted range mean it would be an exceptionally specialised subject for any aquarist who encountered it.
If ever kept, the species would logically require very soft, warm, acidic blackwater conditions matching the humic, tannin-stained floodplain environment of the upper Purus basin, with a densely planted or leaf-littered setup, very gentle filtration, and micro-sized live foods. Because of its paedomorphic features and tiny size, it would be unsuitable for community tanks and would need to be housed with species of comparable or smaller dimensions. There is presently no husbandry literature to draw on.
Conservation
Priocharax britzi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; described in 2021, it falls into the large backlog of recently described species awaiting formal evaluation. Its conservation situation is, on the available evidence, potentially concerning: it is known only from a single small water body in the Amazonian interior, and its entire known range amounts to a lake of roughly 49 ft by 115 ft.
The upper Purus basin experiences ongoing deforestation pressure, and the Transamazônica Road (BR-230), which runs near the type locality, is associated with landscape-level habitat change in western Amazonia. A species with no documented distribution beyond one small lake has no buffer against local extinction events — whether from habitat degradation, hydrological change, or accidental contamination. Formal assessment and targeted surveys to determine whether P. britzi occurs in additional water bodies in the vicinity would be a logical conservation priority.
