Priocharax conwayi is a miniature characin reaching only 0.5 in standard length, described in 2024 from the Rio Tapajós and Amazonas drainages of Pará state, Brazil. One of the smallest vertebrates known from Amazonia, it belongs to a genus of diminutive, cryptic fishes whose saw-toothed dental anatomy sets them apart from most of their relatives. The species has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, and its ecology in the wild remains almost entirely undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Priocharax conwayi was described by Mattox, Lima, Britz, Souza & Oliveira in 2024, in a paper published in Vertebrate Zoology (volume 74, pages 533–550) that characterised two new miniature Priocharax species from the Rio Tapajós and Amazonas drainages of Pará state, northern Brazil. The valid name as registered in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Priocharax conwayi Mattox, Lima, Britz, Souza & Oliveira, 2024.

The genus Priocharax, placed within the family Characidae, comprises a small group of miniaturised characins distributed across lowland Amazonian and Guiana Shield drainages. Miniaturisation in fishes — the evolutionary reduction of adult body size to extreme smallness, typically below 1 in standard length — has arisen independently dozens of times within Characidae and entails a suite of anatomical changes, including the simplification or loss of bones and the retention of larval-like features into adulthood (paedomorphosis). Priocharax species are among the most extreme examples within the family.

The species was named in honour of Dr. Kevin W. Conway, an ichthyologist whose work on miniaturised and paedomorphic fishes contributed substantially to understanding the group.

Morphology

Priocharax conwayi reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 0.5 in, placing it among the smallest characins described from the Amazon basin. Like other members of the genus it displays the suite of anatomical modifications associated with miniaturisation: a simplified skeleton, reduction or loss of certain bones, and a body plan that retains proportions reminiscent of juveniles of larger related species.

The genus name Priocharax — from the Greek prio, meaning saw, and charax, an unidentified fish — alludes to the saw-like dentition that distinguishes the genus from superficially similar miniature characins. Detailed meristic and osteological data for P. conwayi specifically are confined to the original description; given the extreme smallness of the species, most diagnostic features require microscopy to observe. External colouration in miniature, largely transparent characins of this type is typically reduced: the body is often largely translucent or pale, with pigment concentrated in the eyes and along the lateral line or fin bases.

Habitat

The type locality of Priocharax conwayi is within the Rio Tapajós and Amazonas drainage basins of Pará state in northern Brazil. These are large Amazonian lowland river systems characterised by warm, tropical freshwaters; the Tapajós is a major southern tributary of the Amazon, draining the Brazilian Shield, while the Amazonas drainage encompasses the vast floodplain system of the main Amazon stem.

FishBase records the species as freshwater, benthopelagic, and tropical, consistent with the habits of other miniature characins in the genus, which tend to occupy the leaf-litter and detrital zones of small streams, flooded forest floors, or the marginal shallows of larger water bodies. Specific water-chemistry data for the capture sites of P. conwayi are not available in the published sources reviewed here; Amazonian streams in the Tapajós system range broadly from blackwater to clearwater, and without site-specific data the exact preferences of this species cannot be stated with confidence.

Feeding

No dietary studies specific to Priocharax conwayi have been published. Miniature, benthopelagic characins of this body size typically feed on very small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, mites, small insect larvae, and other meiofaunal organisms associated with leaf litter and fine sediment. The extremely small gape associated with a maximum length of 0.5 in SL physically limits prey size.

Data on the feeding ecology of this species are sparse, and any detailed characterisation of its natural diet would require dedicated gut-content or stable-isotope work that has not been reported as of this writing.

Mating

No information on the reproductive behaviour of Priocharax conwayi in the wild or in captivity has been published. Based on the general biology of miniature Amazonian characins, open egg-scattering spawning with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or leaf litter, and no parental care, would be consistent with the group; however, this cannot be confirmed for this species from available data.

Given that P. conwayi was described only in 2024 and is known from a limited number of specimens, observations of its mating behaviour remain an open area for future research.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Priocharax conwayi has not been documented in the published literature reviewed here. The species' extreme small size — under 1 in standard length — would make captive maintenance and breeding technically challenging, requiring a species-only or specialist nano setup with appropriately scaled live foods.

No data on clutch size, egg development, or larval requirements are available for this species at present.

In the aquarium

Priocharax conwayi is not established in the aquarium hobby as of its 2024 description, and no husbandry accounts exist in the literature reviewed here. Its extreme miniature size (under 1 in) would require specialist care: a small, covered nano aquarium, very gentle filtration, and live foods scaled to its tiny gape — microcrustaceans such as copepods, micro-worms, or vinegar eels would be appropriate starting points based on analogous species.

Aquarists interested in miniature characins should note that the very small, largely transparent fishes of this type are sensitive to water quality and difficult to observe; dedicated species tanks away from tankmates capable of predating them are standard practice. Wild-caught specimens, if ever available to the trade, would likely originate as by-catch from specialist collectors in Pará state; tank-bred stock does not currently exist commercially. This is a scientific curiosity rather than a mainstream aquarium subject.

Conservation

Priocharax conwayi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of this writing; it was described only in 2024 and the assessment process lags new descriptions by several years. Its known range within the Rio Tapajós and Amazonas drainages of Pará state places it within one of the most biodiverse but also most pressured river systems on Earth, where deforestation, agribusiness expansion, hydroelectric development, and gold mining in the Tapajós basin represent ongoing and escalating threats to small-stream biodiversity.

Miniature, cryptic species such as P. conwayi are frequently undercollected relative to their actual distribution, and the known range often expands with further survey effort. Conversely, their dependence on intact small-stream microhabitats — leaf litter, marginal forest shading, and clean, cool water — makes them sensitive indicators of catchment condition. Given the pace of habitat loss in the Amazon, early formal evaluation by the IUCN would be warranted.
