The glass bloodfin is one of those tetras that rewards a second look: the body is almost entirely transparent, the organs and backbone visible through the flanks, yet the fins — particularly the anal fin in males — glow with a milky white and faint reddish tint that gives the fish its common name. Native to the rivers of Bolivia and adjacent lowland South America, Prionobrama filigera is a robust, schooling tetra that has been kept by aquarists for well over a century. Its hardiness, peaceful disposition, and preference for cooler water than most tropical tetras have earned it a steady following beyond fashion.

Taxonomy & naming

Prionobrama filigera was described by the American palaeontologist and biologist Edward Drinker Cope in 1870 from material collected in South America. The authority is parenthetical — (Cope, 1870) — indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Prionobrama. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Prionobrama filigera (Cope, 1870) as the valid name, placed within the family Characidae.

The genus Prionobrama is a small genus of characids found in lowland river systems of Bolivia, Brazil, and the Río de la Plata basin. It has at times been allied with the subfamily Aphyocharacinae or treated within the broader Characinae, though higher-level classifications of the Characidae remain actively revised as molecular and morphological work continues. Within the hobby P. filigera is the species most frequently encountered and is the only member of the genus with wide commercial availability.

Morphology

Prionobrama filigera is a slender, fusiform characid reaching around 2.5 in in total length, with females tending to be slightly deeper-bodied and fuller in the abdomen than males. The hallmark of the species is the remarkably transparent body: the musculature of the flanks is nearly colourless, making the backbone, ribs, and internal organs clearly visible in well-lit specimens — a degree of transparency unusual among tetras of comparable size.

Colouration is subdued but not without interest. A faint iridescent lateral stripe runs along the mid-body, and the fins carry off-white to milky pigment. The anal fin of breeding males is notably elongated and finishes in a filamentous trailing extension — a character that the specific epithet filigera ('thread-bearing' or 'filament-carrying') commemorates directly. The tail fin lobes are clear to very lightly pigmented. The adipose fin, characteristic of the family, is present and small.

Habitat

Prionobrama filigera is distributed in the lowland drainages of Bolivia and the upper Río de la Plata system in South America. FishBase records its presence in Bolivia, and the species is associated with clear to slightly turbid river channels and tributaries in seasonally flooded lowland terrain. It is predominantly a species of the water column rather than the substrate.

Water parameters reported from the type and occurrence localities reflect the warm-to-temperate lowland rivers of interior South America: temperatures typically in the range of 64–82 °F, with a preference often cited toward the cooler end of that range relative to many Amazonian tetras. pH spans a wide range across different collection sites. The glass bloodfin's tolerance of temperatures down toward 64 °F makes it one of the few characids genuinely suited to unheated or lightly heated aquaria in temperate climates — a practical advantage that has helped sustain its popularity.

Feeding

Like most small schooling characids, Prionobrama filigera is an opportunistic micropredator and omnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates, zooplankton, and insect matter from the water column. Its upturned mouth and mid-water posture suit surface and upper-column foraging rather than bottom feeding.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of standard foods without difficulty: good-quality micro-pellets and small flakes, frozen Daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops form an appropriate staple diet. Live foods are taken eagerly and improve conditioning for breeding. Feeding small amounts two or three times daily rather than one large meal suits the species' natural foraging rhythm and keeps the clear body looking its best.

Mating

Prionobrama filigera is an egg-scattering, open-water spawner with no parental care, following the typical characid reproductive pattern. Males display toward females using their elongated, filamentous anal fins — the conspicuous structure that gives the species its name — and pursue females through the water column. Spawning is stimulated by good feeding, slight temperature increase, and the presence of fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops into which eggs can fall.

Groups spawn more readily than isolated pairs, and conditioning several fish together in a species tank with dense planting or synthetic spawning mops is the standard hobbyist approach. Spawning activity typically peaks in the early morning.

Breeding

Breeding Prionobrama filigera in captivity is not especially difficult once adults are in good condition. Conditioned adults can be moved to a separate, dimly lit breeding tank with a fine-leaved plant mass or spawning mop, a temperature slightly elevated toward the upper end of the species' range, and soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic water — though the fish is not especially demanding in this regard.

Eggs are scattered and non-adhesive, sinking into the substrate or spawning medium. The adults do not guard and will readily eat eggs and fry if left in the tank; they should be removed promptly after spawning. Eggs hatch within 24–36 hours at typical breeding temperatures, and the tiny fry become free-swimming within a few days. First foods are infusoria or commercial fry food, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Growth to juvenile size is relatively rapid.

In the aquarium

Prionobrama filigera is an excellent community fish and an underrated choice for planted aquaria. It is peaceful, hardy, and best kept in schools of eight or more — schooling behaviour is tighter and more natural in larger groups, and individual fish are bolder. A tank of 23.5 in or more in length gives a school adequate swimming room.

The species' tolerance of lower temperatures is a practical advantage: it is comfortable at 64–79 °F, making it compatible with many temperate and subtropical fish as well as standard tropical communities. It does not require a heater in many homes during warmer months. Water quality should be good but parameters are flexible — the glass bloodfin is not delicate. Planted tanks with open mid-water swimming space show the transparent body and fin detail to best effect; dark substrates and background planting make the iridescent stripe more visible. Tankmates should be similarly peaceful and not so large that the glass bloodfin feels threatened; other small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and smaller danios are all appropriate companions.

Conservation

Prionobrama filigera has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no official threat category. The species is widespread in Bolivian lowland drainages and appears to tolerate a range of habitat conditions, which likely explains its absence from conservation priority lists to date.

The glass bloodfin is almost entirely supplied to the ornamental trade from captive-bred stock, having been bred commercially for many decades. This means wild populations face negligible direct collection pressure from the hobby. Broader threats to lowland South American river systems — watershed modification, seasonal flooding regimes altered by land-use change, water quality — remain context for any freshwater species in the region, but P. filigera is not currently considered at risk.
