Prionobrama paraguayensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1914 from material collected in the Paraguay River drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name with Eigenmann as the parenthetical authority, indicating the species was originally placed in a different genus before transfer to Prionobrama. The genus Prionobrama Eigenmann, 1903 sits within the family Characidae and is most closely allied to the bloodfin tetras of the genus Aphyocharax; the two genera share the elongated, laterally compressed body form and the characteristic reddened or hyaline finnage of the bloodfin group.
The specific epithet paraguayensis is a toponym derived from Paraguay, indicating the type locality or primary distribution in the Paraguay River system. Within the genus, P. paraguayensis is distinguished from the better-known Prionobrama filigera (the glass bloodfin of the Amazon) by distribution and by subtle morphological differences in body depth, scale counts, and fin proportions, though the two are frequently confused in the trade.
Morphology
Prionobrama paraguayensis is a small, slender characin reaching approximately 2 in in standard length. The body is highly compressed laterally and strikingly transparent — the silvery peritoneum and internal organs are visible through the flanks in live fish, giving it the characteristic 'glass' appearance common to this group of bloodfin relatives. The scales are cycloid and relatively large for the body size.
The most conspicuous colour feature is the tail: the caudal fin carries red or orange-red pigmentation, concentrated especially in the lobes, that contrasts with the otherwise hyaline or lightly iridescent body. The dorsal and other fins are mostly clear. A faint lateral stripe of silvery-blue iridescence may be visible under good light. The species lacks the bold black-and-red patterning of Aphyocharax anisitsi but shares the bloodfin group's general aesthetic. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; females tend to be slightly deeper-bodied and fuller in the abdomen when ripe, while males may be slightly more slender.
Habitat
The species is associated with the Paraguay River drainage, with records from Paraguayan waters and potentially adjacent parts of Bolivia, Brazil, and Argentina where that river system extends. The Paraguay River is a major South American waterway draining the vast Pantanal wetland complex — the world's largest tropical wetland — before joining the Paraná system.
In this basin, Prionobrama paraguayensis is likely found in the calmer margins of rivers, backwaters, oxbow lakes, and seasonally flooded areas characteristic of Pantanal-edge habitats — the warm, often turbid or slightly tannin-stained, slower-flowing waters that suit many small characins. The Pantanal experiences pronounced wet and dry seasons, and fish species in this system are adapted to strongly fluctuating water levels and conditions across the year. Precise water-chemistry data for this species in the wild are sparse in the available literature.
Feeding
Like other small characins of its group, Prionobrama paraguayensis is an opportunistic micropredator and omnivore. In the wild it likely feeds on small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, aquatic insects and their fallen terrestrial counterparts — as well as algae and plant detritus taken incidentally.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts good-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm. Varied feeding with a live or frozen component maintains condition and brings out the red caudal pigmentation more vividly. It feeds in the mid-to-upper water column and is an active, quick swimmer at feeding time.
Mating
Prionobrama paraguayensis is an egg-scattering species that practises no parental care, following the typical pattern of its relatives in the bloodfin group. Males are likely to display to females with fin-spreading and body-flashing behaviours common among small characins, with spawning most readily triggered by slightly raised temperatures, water changes, or gradual softening of water conditions.
Spawning occurs in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, where eggs are scattered and allowed to fall. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among plant material or substrate. As with bloodfin tetras generally, adults will consume their own eggs given the opportunity, so the pair should be removed from the spawning site or eggs transferred to a separate vessel if breeding is the aim.
Breeding
Breeding follows the pattern typical of small Neotropical egg-scatterers: a conditioned pair or small group is placed in a prepared tank with fine-leaved plants or a synthetic spawning mop over a fine-mesh or marbled base that protects falling eggs from the adults. A slight rise in temperature to around 79–82 °F and a water change with slightly softer, slightly acidic water often triggers spawning.
The eggs are small and relatively numerous; incubation at tropical temperatures typically lasts 24–48 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days of hatching. First foods are infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered flake as the fry grow. The adults offer no care and should be removed after spawning. Specific clutch-size data for this species are sparse in the available literature, but the bloodfin group generally produces several hundred eggs per spawning event.
In the aquarium
Prionobrama paraguayensis is an infrequently seen but rewarding aquarium fish for the patient hobbyist. It should be kept in a group of six or more — small characins held singly or in pairs are typically shy and stressed, while a proper shoal produces natural schooling behaviour and brings out the reddish tail colours. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in or more in length suits a group comfortably, with some open swimming space and patches of fine-leaved planting.
Water conditions should be warm (75–82 °F), slightly soft to moderately hard, and neutral to mildly acidic to neutral — conditions broadly representative of Paraguayan river habitats. The fish is peaceful and mixes well with similarly sized, non-aggressive species: other small tetras, pencilfish, Corydoras catfish, and smaller rasboras are all suitable companions. Good filtration and regular water changes are important; small characins are sensitive to water-quality decline. The glass bloodfin is hardy once established and is an excellent choice for a well-maintained community tank featuring South American species.
Availability in the trade is inconsistent; the species is not as commonly exported as its more widespread relative Prionobrama filigera, so sourcing may require a specialist supplier.
Conservation
Prionobrama paraguayensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. For a riverine characin associated with the Paraguay–Pantanal system, the habitat nonetheless carries the region's familiar pressures — damming, channelisation, deforestation of riparian zones, and agricultural runoff — along with water-quality degradation and the effects of the pronounced seasonal flooding cycles being altered by upstream land-use change.
The Pantanal and Paraguay River basin face significant conservation pressure from expanding soy agriculture, cattle ranching, and infrastructure development in the headwater regions. The species is not a target of commercial fisheries or heavy ornamental collection pressure, and its occurrence within the biologically rich Pantanal wetland gives it some degree of buffer through the sheer scale of that protected and semi-protected landscape, though continued monitoring of population trends across the drainage remains worthwhile.
