Described only in 2019 from the flooded savannahs of Casanare in eastern Colombia, Pristella ariporo is the second known species in its genus — and the rarest, confined to the wetlands draining into the Río Ariporo of the Orinoco basin. Smaller than its familiar relative P. maxillaris, it differs in several hard anatomical characters and, unusually, shows reversed sexual dimorphism: the females are the more vividly coloured sex. It has an IUCN status of Least Concern, though its range is narrow and its flooded-grassland habitat is among the most seasonally dynamic in South America.

Taxonomy & naming

Pristella ariporo was formally described in 2019 by Conde-Saldaña, Albornoz-Garzón, García-Melo, Villa-Navarro, Mirande, and Lima, making it only the second species assigned to the genus Pristella. The holotype — a 1 in SL female (voucher CZUT-IC 19972) — was collected at Paz de Ariporo, cañada El Pavón, in the Colombian department of Casanare (05°30′23″N 71°02′01″W). The description simultaneously redefined the genus to accommodate the new species and clarify its boundaries.

Pristella ariporo is distinguished from the better-known P. maxillaris by several consistent characters: it lacks maxillary teeth entirely, its premaxillary and dentary teeth are all conical (not multicuspid), it has no dark blotch on the pelvic fin, and it lacks the humeral blotch present in P. maxillaris. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) with a 2019 publication year. The species name derives from the Río Ariporo, the river drainage in which all known type-locality material was collected.

Morphology

Pristella ariporo is a small characid reaching approximately 1 in standard length, making it slightly smaller than a typical P. maxillaris. The body is laterally compressed and relatively slender, in the general fashion of the genus. A notable diagnostic feature is the dentition: all premaxillary and dentary teeth are uniformly conical, and no maxillary teeth are present — a combination that sets it apart from P. maxillaris, where multicuspid teeth and maxillary teeth are present.

The species is notable for reversed sexual dimorphism: females are the more brightly coloured sex, a pattern that is uncommon in characids and the inverse of the condition in P. maxillaris. Specific colour pattern details from the original description indicate the absence of both the dark pelvic-fin blotch and the humeral blotch that characterise its congener. Beyond these diagnostic contrasts, detailed published colour accounts for live or preserved specimens are sparse in available sources.

Habitat

Pristella ariporo inhabits the extensive wetlands and tributary systems of the Río Casanare and its affluent the Río Ariporo, part of the Río Meta drainage of the broader Orinoco basin in eastern Colombia (department of Casanare). The type locality, cañada El Pavón near Paz de Ariporo, sits in lowland flooded savannah — the Colombian llanos — where seasonal inundation creates vast shallow wetlands during the wet season.

FishBase characterises the species' habitat as flooded savannah, and the voucher paratypes were collected in September 2016, during the wet-season flood pulse that temporarily links streams, cañadas, and open grassland into a continuous aquatic environment. Water conditions in the Casanare llanos wetlands are typically warm, soft to moderately mineralised, and somewhat acidic to neutral, reflecting the sedimentary catchment and seasonal rainfall inputs, though specific measured parameters for the type locality are not reported in available sources.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Pristella ariporo a trophic level of 3.2 ± 0.4, indicating an omnivorous diet that is broadly consistent with the feeding habits of the genus Pristella and of small characids of flooded savannah habitats generally. At trophic level 3.2, the diet is likely dominated by small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans — supplemented by plant material, algae, and organic detritus encountered in the shallow, vegetated wetland environment.

No targeted feeding studies have been published for this species. In the aquarium, small characids of its size and ecological guild typically accept fine flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp nauplii, though specific captive husbandry data for P. ariporo are absent from the literature at this time.

Mating

No detailed observations of courtship behaviour in Pristella ariporo have been published. Based on the biology of P. maxillaris and of small characids of comparable ecology, spawning is expected to follow the general egg-scattering pattern typical of the family: brief, active pursuit of females by males (or, given the reversed dimorphism, potentially female-initiated signalling), with eggs scattered among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrate, and no parental care.

The reversed sexual dimorphism — females more colourful than males — suggests that conventional assumptions about which sex initiates or drives mate choice may be inverted relative to the norm in characids. Whether female coloration functions in mate choice signalling, intrasexual competition, or camouflage in the species' turbid, grass-choked wetland has not been studied.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Pristella ariporo appear in the available literature. Based on the reproductive mode inferred for the genus, eggs are expected to be small, non-adhesive to mildly adhesive, scattered among vegetation, and left without parental attention; adults are likely egg-indifferent or cannibalistic in the manner typical of egg-scattering characins.

The species is not established in the aquarium hobby as of the time of writing, and specific breeding temperature, clutch-size, or incubation data are not available. The closely related P. maxillaris — the X-ray tetra — has been bred routinely in captivity for decades, and its protocols (soft, warm water; dense fine-leaved planting or spawning mops; removal of adults post-spawn; infusorial or APR first foods) likely provide a reasonable starting framework should P. ariporo become available.

In the aquarium

Pristella ariporo is not currently established in the aquarium trade. The species was described only in 2019 from a narrow range in Colombian flooded savannah, and no commercial or hobbyist accounts of keeping or breeding it have appeared in the sources available at the time of writing.

Its small size (to 1 in SL), genus membership, and flooded-savannah origin suggest it would be suited to a soft, warm, well-planted nano or species aquarium if it were ever to become available through legal collection or captive breeding. The reversed sexual dimorphism — females more colourful than males — would make it a visually distinctive oddity in the characin hobby. Any future captive husbandry would benefit from approximating the warm, seasonal wetland conditions of the Casanare llanos.

Conservation

Pristella ariporo is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 2020. The LC designation reflects a lack of current evidence for rapid population decline rather than an indication of abundance or security; the species' range is restricted to the Río Ariporo drainage of Casanare, Colombia, a geographically narrow footprint within the broader Orinoco system.

The flooded savannahs of the Casanare llanos, while still extensive, face pressures from agricultural conversion (particularly cattle ranching and rice cultivation), altered hydrology from water diversion, and oil extraction activities across the department. Species confined to seasonal wetland systems are sensitive to changes in flood-pulse dynamics. The species is new to science and not in trade, so collection pressure is not currently a documented threat; ongoing monitoring of the Casanare wetland system remains important for confirming its continued Least Concern status.
