The X-ray tetra earns its name honestly: a translucent, almost ghost-like body through which the vertebral column and swim bladder are faintly visible, set off by a boldly patterned dorsal and anal fin in black, white, and yellow. Pristella maxillaris is one of the hardiest and most adaptable small characins in the aquarium hobby, tolerating a wider range of water chemistry than most of its family — and one of the very few tetras that does equally well in soft-acid blackwater and moderately hard alkaline conditions. In the wild it ranges across coastal river systems of Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and northern Brazil, using seasonally flooded savannahs as spawning habitat. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2020, with a stable population across a broad range.

Taxonomy & naming

Pristella maxillaris was described by Albert Ulrey in 1894, with the parenthetical authority reflecting that the species has been moved from Ulrey's original genus placement. The species is the sole member of Pristella and sits within the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Americas. The type locality is Caño Laguna Rafael, near Caicara on the Orinoco basin in Venezuela, as recorded in the IUCN assessment. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name; the synonym Pristella riddlei has appeared in older literature and trade references but is not a valid name.

The IUCN assessment notes that Pristella maxillaris may represent a complex of cryptic species rather than a single uniform taxon. A morphologically similar species, P. ariporo, occupies the upper Orinoco and Meta drainages and is considered distinct. The broad geographic range attributed to P. maxillaris in older literature — spanning the Amazon, Orinoco, and coastal Guiana rivers — may partly reflect this taxonomic uncertainty, and future revisions could narrow the recognised distribution of the nominal species. Until such a revision is published, P. maxillaris in the strict sense is treated as a wide-ranging coastal and lowland Neotropical characin.

The genus name Pristella combines roots pointing to the saw-edged scale structure characteristic of characins, with the Latin diminutive -ella indicating small size. The epithet maxillaris is Latin for 'of the jaw' or 'pertaining to the maxilla', describing a feature of the oral anatomy noted in the original description.

Morphology

Pristella maxillaris is a small, slender-bodied characin reaching approximately 2 in total length, with most specimens in aquaria running 1.5–2 in standard length. The body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate, with the translucent flanks that give rise to all its common names: through the glassy, yellowish or silvery skin, the vertebral column and the outline of internal organs are clearly visible, particularly in juveniles and females. This degree of transparency is unusual among characins and makes the species immediately recognisable.

The fins are the other diagnostic feature. The dorsal and anal fins each carry a bold pattern of black, yellow, and white bands arranged in distinct horizontal zones — a striking, high-contrast design against the otherwise understated body. The caudal fin is forked and often tinged reddish or yellowish at the lobes, particularly in good condition. The adipose fin is present, as is typical for characins. A selectively bred golden or semi-albino strain is widely available in the trade; these fish retain the patterned fins but show a more uniformly yellow-gold body with reduced pigmentation and often pinkish eyes, and they breed true.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle under normal viewing conditions. Females tend to be noticeably plumper through the belly, especially when in breeding condition, a difference that becomes obvious when the fish are viewed from above or against a light source. Males are generally slimmer-bodied. Both sexes carry the same fin patterning, with no significant colour difference between them.

Habitat

Pristella maxillaris is distributed across coastal river systems of Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and northern Brazil, including river drainages that empty into the Atlantic along the Guiana coast and the lower reaches of the Amazon system. Within Brazil, records are documented from the states of Amapá, Maranhão, Pará, and Tocantins. The IUCN assessment also records the species from the Amazon and Orinoco basins in the strict sense, though as noted above the taxonomic boundary with P. ariporo introduces some uncertainty about the precise Orinoco presence.

In the wild, Pristella maxillaris shows a strong seasonal pattern of habitat use. During the dry season it concentrates in clearwater streams and small tributaries where it can be locally abundant in dense aggregations. As wet-season rains inundate the surrounding landscape, it disperses into seasonally flooded savannah vegetation — submerged grasses, marginal plants, and fallen terrestrial vegetation that provide both cover and spawning habitat. The IUCN records the species' habitat as slow-moving lotic and lentic environments with dense aquatic vegetation. This seasonal shift between open water and flooded vegetation mirrors the habits of many small South American characins tied to lowland floodplain systems.

Water chemistry across this range is notably variable, which underpins the species' well-documented tolerance in captivity. Coastal Guiana rivers can range from warm, slightly acidic, and very soft to more neutral and moderately hard depending on substrate and season. The broad chemistry tolerance — pH 6.0–8.0, hardness from very soft to over 35 dH as reported by FishBase — is a genuine ecological attribute rather than aquarium lore, reflecting life in geochemically diverse coastal lowland systems.

Feeding

Pristella maxillaris is a micropredator feeding on small invertebrates in the wild: tiny crustaceans, worms, insect larvae, and other small aquatic organisms form the core of its natural diet. The IUCN assessment also notes the consumption of algae and plant material, making it a broadly omnivorous species rather than a strict carnivore, consistent with the feeding strategies of many small characins that exploit whatever invertebrate and plant material is available in their seasonally variable environments.

In the aquarium, it is one of the least demanding tetras to feed. It readily accepts high-quality flake food and small granules as a staple, and shows no reluctance to take prepared foods even when first acquired. Adding regular supplements of small frozen or live foods — Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), and similar invertebrate prey — improves condition and colouration and is particularly important when conditioning fish for breeding. Micropredators of this size do best fed small amounts multiple times per day rather than a single large ration, better reflecting opportunistic feeding habits in the wild.

The species is not aggressive at feeding and does not outcompete smaller or more timid tankmates, which is part of what makes it an ideal community fish. It feeds at all water levels but is most active in the middle water column, and groups will rise to the surface readily when food is introduced.

Mating

Pristella maxillaris is an open-water egg-scatterer and spawning behaviour follows the typical pattern of small shoaling characins: no pair bond is formed, no territory is defended, and there is no parental care of any kind. Instead, individual fish broadcast eggs and milt into the water column or among fine-leaved vegetation, then promptly abandon them. In the wild, the seasonal inundation of savannah vegetation provides the fine-structured, low-flow spawning habitat the species gravitates toward during the wet season.

In captivity, mating is initiated by conditioning adults on live and frozen foods and, for best results, by adjusting water chemistry toward softer, more acidic conditions: pH 5.5–6.5, general hardness of 1–5 dH, and a temperature around 79–84 °F help bring fish into peak spawning condition. Under these circumstances a pair or a small group will begin pursuing each other through plant thickets or spawning mops, with males chasing females and the pair quivering side by side at the moment of egg release. Spawning activity is most intense in the morning, often triggered by the first light of the day.

Males do not display elaborate courtship colours; both sexes are similarly marked, and spawning interactions are driven by behaviour rather than visual signalling. Healthy adults in a well-maintained group will begin spawning attempts without special conditioning, though fecundity and egg quality improve substantially with a richer pre-spawn diet and triggering partial water changes.

Breeding

Breeding Pristella maxillaris in the aquarium is straightforward enough that it is commonly achieved by hobbyists with no specialist equipment, which is a major reason why the overwhelming majority of fish available in the trade are captive-bred rather than wild-caught. A dedicated breeding setup typically consists of a small, dimly lit tank lined with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, hornwort, or synthetic spawning mops, filled with soft acidic water. Mesh or marbles on the bottom allow eggs to fall out of reach of the adults.

A conditioned pair or a small group is introduced in the evening; spawning usually follows the next morning. The female releases adhesive eggs among the vegetation or into the water column, where they settle into plant material or to the substrate. A productive spawn yields 300–400 eggs as recorded in both FishBase and Seriously Fish. The adults should be removed promptly after spawning is complete, as they offer no parental care and will consume any eggs they can locate. Keeping the tank dimly lit during incubation reduces photosensitive egg losses.

At breeding temperatures the eggs hatch within 24–36 hours, and the larvae become free-swimming approximately three to four days after hatching. At this stage the fry are very small and require fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii after a further week or so. Growth is steady at warmer temperatures and fry reach sellable size within two to three months. The golden semi-albino strain breeds true and is produced by the same method.

In the aquarium

Pristella maxillaris is widely regarded as one of the best beginner tetras and one of the most reliably peaceful community fish available in the hobby. It is gregarious and should be kept in groups of at least six, with ten or more producing more confident, active behaviour and better display of the shoaling instinct. At 1.5–2 in, an adult group fits comfortably in an aquarium from around 23.5 in upward, though a longer tank of 31.5–35.5 in or more allows a proper school to form and move as a unit.

The species' outstanding practical advantage is its chemistry tolerance. Most tetras from soft-water Neotropical origins struggle or lose colour in hard alkaline tap water; Pristella maxillaris remains healthy and well-coloured across pH 6.0–7.5 and a wide range of hardness, making it genuinely suitable for most tap water conditions without adjustment. For breeding, softer and more acidic water is preferred, but for everyday keeping the fish is unusually forgiving. Water temperature of 72–82 °F covers the full range reported across sources, with the mid-range preferred for long-term health.

As a community fish it is compatible with virtually any similarly sized, non-aggressive species: other small tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, small livebearers, and peaceful dwarf cichlids all make suitable companions. It should not be kept with fin-nippers that will target its patterned fins. A planted tank with some open swimming space, subdued lighting, and dark substrate shows the translucent body and patterned fins at their best. Tank-bred stock is robust and long-lived for a fish of its size — aquarists regularly report healthy individuals at three to five years in well-maintained aquaria.

Conservation

Pristella maxillaris is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the evaluation completed on 16 November 2020. The population trend is recorded as stable. The species occurs across a broad range encompassing Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and northern Brazil, and it is present within protected areas in Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname. No major species-specific threats have been identified in the assessment, though general anthropogenic pressures — urban expansion, agricultural conversion, and oil extraction — are noted as present within its range.

The species is among the most heavily captive-bred small tetras in the world. Commercial aquaculture operations in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe supply the bulk of hobby demand, effectively decoupling ornamental trade from wild population pressure. This situation contrasts markedly with more vulnerable species where historical collection contributed directly to wild population decline.

The IUCN notes that P. maxillaris may represent a complex of cryptic species, and future taxonomic revision could result in populations being recognised as distinct species with narrower ranges — potentially altering the conservation status of those daughter taxa. For now, the nominal species is considered secure across its recognised distribution. Its broad chemistry tolerance, wide geographic range, presence in protected areas, and well-established captive-breeding infrastructure all contribute to a low overall vulnerability profile.
