Taxonomy & naming
Ramirezella pyrophthalma was originally described by Wilson J.E.M. Costa in 1994 and is placed in the family Acestrorhamphidae within the order Characiformes. The genus Ramirezella accommodates a small cluster of slender South American characins distinguished from allied genera by details of the caudal peduncle patterning and body proportion; R. pyrophthalma is the most widely recorded species in the group.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan) treats Ramirezella pyrophthalma (Costa, 1994) as the valid name, with the parenthetical authority reflecting that the species was originally placed in a different genus. The family assignment to Acestrorhamphidae reflects a 2024 phylogenomic reclassification of the broader Characidae sensu lato; the field remains active and some sources still list the species under Characidae. The top-level family field here follows the instruction to record 'Characidae' as a stable anchor across the site's broader tetra section.
Morphology
This is an exceptionally small fish: FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in, placing it among the tiniest characins in the Araguaia drainage. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the typical characin fashion, with a moderately forked caudal fin and the small adipose fin characteristic of the order.
The common name fire-eye tetra captures the species' most arresting feature — the iris is vivid red to orange-red, conspicuous against the otherwise pale, translucent body. A dark caudal-peduncle mark is reported as a distinguishing character within the genus. Females are presumed to be plumper-bodied when ripe, as in most egg-scattering tetras, but detailed external sexual dimorphism data for this species are sparse in the published literature.
Habitat
The type locality is the Araguaia River basin of central Brazil (Mato Grosso / Goiás / Pará states), one of the major tributaries of the Tocantins–Araguaia system draining the central Brazilian plateau. A more recent ichthyological survey documented R. pyrophthalma from the Lençóis Maranhenses region of Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil, suggesting that the species' range extends across a broader portion of the central and northeastern Brazilian lowlands than originally understood.
Within these drainages the species occupies freshwater habitats in the mid-to-lower water layer, consistent with the benthic or demersal tendency noted for it in FishBase. Water conditions across these tropical lowland rivers are typically soft and warm, with temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius and mildly acidic to neutral pH. The precise microhabitat preferences — whether the species associates with leaf litter, submerged vegetation, or open sandy substrates — are not well characterised in the literature currently available.
Feeding
No targeted dietary study for Ramirezella pyrophthalma has been published in sources accessible at time of writing. As a small characin from a riverine tropical habitat, the species almost certainly feeds opportunistically on microinvertebrates, small insects and larvae, zooplankton, and organic particles — the standard diet of characins at this body size.
In the aquarium, small commercially produced ornamental fish foods of appropriate size are accepted readily. Finely crushed flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and cyclops are appropriate. Given the fish's minute size, food particle diameter matters: items intended for species such as neon tetras or smaller will be suitable where foods for standard community fish would be too large.
Mating
Ramirezella pyrophthalma follows the egg-scattering reproductive pattern typical of small characins. Courtship is likely brief and non-elaborate: males pursue receptive females into fine-leaved vegetation or over suitable substrate, where eggs are scattered without pair bond formation or territory defence.
The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are presumably deposited among fine-leaved aquatic plants or settled into the substrate. No parental care follows spawning; adults will consume eggs and newly hatched fry if left in the spawning tank. Specific observations on courtship behaviour in this species are not detailed in literature currently available.
Breeding

General characin breeding protocols apply: conditioned adults introduced to a densely planted or mop-equipped breeding tank will scatter small adhesive eggs, which should be removed promptly to prevent predation.

Ramirezella pyrophthalma is rarely encountered in the hobby, and most information on its aquarium requirements derives from general small-tetra husbandry rather than species-specific experience. A nano or species tank of 10–15 US gal is likely sufficient for a small school; soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6–7.5, 72–79 °F) matching the conditions of its Araguaia drainage origin is recommended.
The fire-eye tetra's diminutive size (under 1.5 in) means it is vulnerable to predation by most standard community fish; tankmates should be similarly small and non-aggressive — other nano tetras, small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, or otocinclus are appropriate companions. Dense planting with fine-leaved plants such as hornwort or Java moss provides cover and will be used as spawning substrate. The species is presumed to school, and keeping six or more individuals is advisable both for the fish's wellbeing and to observe natural behaviour.
Conservation
Ramirezella pyrophthalma is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded in 2018. The Least Concern listing reflects the absence of evidence for a rapid or large-scale population decline, rather than a confident picture of abundance: the species inhabits a broad and largely intact lowland river system in central Brazil, and its documented occurrence in multiple drainages, including the Lençóis Maranhenses region, suggests it is not critically restricted in range.
The broader Araguaia–Tocantins basin faces ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and hydroelectric development in the Brazilian interior. Whether these pressures specifically threaten this small, low-profile species is not well studied. Its obscurity in the aquarium trade means it is not a target of significant wild collection, which removes one common threat vector for small ornamental fishes.
