Ramirezella newboldi is a small characid from the drainage systems of northern South America, originally described from Venezuela and later confirmed from the upper Amazon and Río Orinoco basins spanning Colombia and Venezuela. The species was resurrected and formally redefined in a 2020 taxonomic revision that designated a neotype from Palital, Estado Guárico, Venezuela — resolving decades of confusion with the closely related Moenkhausia cotinho Eigenmann. It is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of longer pectoral fins, conical teeth on the posterior dentary, the absence of a reticulate body pattern, and a shorter longitudinal dark stripe; live individuals are notable for a vivid red to orange colouration in the dorsal region of the eye.

Taxonomy & naming

Ramirezella newboldi was originally described by Fernández-Yépez in 1949, placing it in the genus Ramirezella within the family Characidae. The species' history is tangled: the original holotype was apparently lost or could not be located, and the taxon was for a time treated as a synonym of, or confused with, Moenkhausia cotinho Eigenmann. A 2020 study published in Zootaxa formally untangled the two species, designated a neotype (1.5 in standard length) from Palital, Estado Guárico, Venezuela, and provided a modern diagnosis that separated R. newboldi from its near relatives on the basis of clear morphological characters.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Ramirezella newboldi Fernández-Yépez, 1949. The genus Ramirezella is placed within Characidae; the family remains under active revision, and the boundaries of subfamilies and tribes within the broader characid complex continue to be refined through molecular and morphological study. The authority is not placed in parentheses because the species was originally described in Ramirezella, where it remains.

Morphology

Ramirezella newboldi is a small, moderately elongate characid. The neotype designated in the 2020 revision measured 1.5 in standard length, which is broadly representative of the species' adult size range. The body plan follows the generalist characid pattern — laterally compressed, with the typical paired dorsal and adipose fins of the family.

The species is distinguished from its congeners by a suite of characters identified in the 2020 taxonomic study: the pectoral fins are longer relative to body size than in closely related species; the teeth on the posterior dentary are conical rather than multicuspid; the body surface lacks the reticulate (net-like) patterning seen in some relatives; and the longitudinal dark midlateral stripe is shorter. In life, the dorsal region of the eye carries a red to orange colouration, a character noted as diagnostically useful for field and aquarium identification.

Habitat

Ramirezella newboldi is known from the upper Amazon basin and the Río Orinoco basin in Colombia and Venezuela. The type locality of the designated neotype is Palital, Estado Guárico, Venezuela, a lowland locality in the Orinoco drainage system. The species thus spans the Orinoco and Amazon systems across part of northern South America, a distribution pattern shared by a number of small South American characids that exploit trans-basin connections or were distributed prior to current drainage configurations.

Detailed habitat data specific to Ramirezella newboldi are sparse in the available literature. Like all small characids it would benefit from being kept in a group of six or more in a well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration and subdued lighting. Its small size and likely peaceful temperament suggest compatibility with other small, non-aggressive species from the same region.

Conservation

Ramirezella newboldi has not been assessed for the IUCN Red List; no specific entry was found for this species under either its current name or its former synonymy. It therefore carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE) at the time of writing.

The species' distribution across parts of the Orinoco and upper Amazon basin encompasses regions that experience a range of anthropogenic pressures, including agriculture-driven deforestation, river modification, and contamination in the Venezuelan llanos and adjacent lowlands. Without formal assessment, baseline population data, or targeted monitoring, the conservation state of Ramirezella newboldi is unknown. Its relatively recent formal recognition as a distinct species — clarified only in 2020 — means that population-level data collection is still at an early stage.
