Saccoderma melanostigma is a diminutive cheirodontine characid reaching barely 1 in standard length, endemic to the Maracaibo Lake basin of northwestern Venezuela. It is immediately recognisable among its genus-mates by the bold black spot at the base of the caudal fin — the mark its species name commemorates — and by the unusual modified scales on the male's caudal fin, a structural adaptation tied to reproduction. Confined to small, shaded streams within a single drainage, the species has been assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though its limited range means it draws most of its attention from those with a special interest in miniature or stream-adapted characids.

Taxonomy & naming

Saccoderma melanostigma was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 and currently stands as the best-known representative of the small cheirodontine genus Saccoderma. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid name as Saccoderma melanostigma Schultz, 1944, and the species remains placed in Characidae, the largest family of New World characiforms.

The genus name Saccoderma derives from the Latin saccus ('bag') combined with the Greek derma ('skin'), a reference to the conspicuous dermal sac found on the caudal fin of males — a structural feature unusual in small characids and one that has attracted ichthyological interest as a probable reproductive adaptation. The specific epithet melanostigma is formed from the Greek melanos ('black') and stigma ('mark' or 'spot'), directly describing the prominent dark spot at the caudal-fin base that identifies the species in life and in preserved specimens alike.

Morphology

This is one of the smallest characids in its range, with a reported maximum standard length of 1 in. The body form is slender and laterally compressed in the manner typical of small cheirodontines, with the usual complement of small, moderately sized scales and an adipose fin.

The most distinctive feature is the black caudal spot, which is sharply defined at the base of the caudal fin and visible in both sexes. Males additionally bear modified scales on the caudal fin associated with the genus-defining dermal sac, a structure thought to play a role in courtship or sperm transfer. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, indicating that it occupies both the lower and open water column of its stream habitats rather than being exclusively bottom-associated.

Habitat

Saccoderma melanostigma is restricted to the Maracaibo Lake basin in northwestern Venezuela, where it inhabits small tributary streams. FishBase records the species in shady, sheltered stream microhabitats — slow to moderate current with overhead or riparian cover — conditions typical of small cheirodontines that avoid the main channel of larger rivers.

Water parameters recorded for the species fall within the warm, slightly soft-to-moderately hard range: temperatures of 73–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and hardness of 2–8 dH. These values are consistent with the upland and foothill streams of the Maracaibo drainage, which tend toward slightly acidic to neutral, relatively low-conductivity water where shading from riparian vegetation keeps conditions stable.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.2 for Saccoderma melanostigma and specifically notes mosquito larvae among its natural prey items, placing it among the invertivore-leaning small characids rather than those with a primarily herbivorous or detritivorous diet. At this trophic position the species is an active predator of soft-bodied aquatic invertebrates proportionate to its small size.

In the aquarium, fish of this guild accept small live and frozen invertebrates readily — mosquito larvae, micro-worms, Daphnia, and newly hatched brine shrimp are all appropriate. Suitably fine-grained prepared foods (micro-pellets, crushed flake) can supplement the diet, though live and frozen items will provide the best long-term condition for such a small, active characid.

Mating

No detailed field observations of courtship in Saccoderma melanostigma have been published in the accessible literature. The modified caudal-fin scales forming the dermal sac in males are widely regarded as a reproductive adaptation — potentially involved in the transfer of chemical signals or physical stimulation during spawning — though the precise mechanism remains incompletely described.

By analogy with other small cheirodontine and Stevardiinae-allied characids, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over substrate, with no parental care. The male's unusual caudal anatomy distinguishes this genus from typical open-water egg-scatterers and warrants attention from anyone observing spawning behaviour at close range.

Breeding

Captive breeding accounts for Saccoderma melanostigma are sparse in the available hobby literature. Given the species' cheirodontine affinity, the working assumption is open egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive eggs receiving no parental care after deposition and adults liable to consume any eggs they encounter.

A conditioning diet rich in live or frozen invertebrates, soft to neutral water in the 75–79 °F range, and a densely planted or well-mossed spawning tank would be the logical starting conditions for a captive attempt. Fry from small cheirodontines are typically tiny at hatching and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Anyone achieving a reliable breeding record with this species would make a useful contribution to the hobby literature, as documented captive reproduction data are lacking.

In the aquarium

Saccoderma melanostigma is rarely encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade and is largely a species for specialists with an interest in Venezuelan stream fauna or miniature characids. Its small adult size (under 1 in SL) means it is best housed with similarly sized or smaller tankmates; in a species or genus tank it presents no aggression concerns but would itself be at risk alongside anything large enough to treat it as prey.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' Maracaibo stream origins: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.0, dH 2–8) at 73–81 °F. A shaded, well-planted aquarium with gentle circulation and leaf-litter or dark substrate mimics the stream habitats from which it comes and will reduce stress markedly. Given how little published husbandry data exists, keepers should treat it as delicate until experience suggests otherwise, and document any breeding behaviour carefully.

Conservation

Saccoderma melanostigma is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 15 January 2021. The LC listing reflects the absence of evidence for a rapidly declining population or a sufficiently restricted range to trigger a threatened category under current data.

Nevertheless, the species is endemic to the Maracaibo Lake basin — a drainage under persistent pressure from agricultural runoff, deforestation of riparian corridors, and water abstraction — and its apparent restriction to small tributary streams means it has limited dispersal options if local habitat quality deteriorates. Monitoring of stream-confined endemics in this basin is uneven, and future reassessments may need to account for catchment-scale changes if deforestation and land-use intensification continue in the upland parts of the drainage.
