Saccoderma robusta was described by the German-Colombian ichthyologist Georg Dahl in 1955. The species is placed in the family Characidae within the subfamily Cheirodontinae, a lineage of small New World characids that includes genera such as Cheirodon, Odontostilbe, and Serrapinnus. The cheirodontines are predominantly herbivorous to omnivorous grazers of South American lowland freshwaters, distinguished by details of jaw dentition and body form from other small characids.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) is the governing authority for the valid name Saccoderma robusta Dahl, 1955. Some sources have flagged the species' taxonomic standing as uncertain, noting its status as a potential species inquirendum; the broader genus Saccoderma is a small characid lineage endemic to Colombia. Resolution of its precise phylogenetic placement relative to other cheirodontine genera may require additional morphological or molecular study.

Anyone obtaining specimens through specialist collection or scientific work should approach their care conservatively, modelling water parameters on the Sinú River's lowland tropical conditions.
