Serrabrycon magoi is one of the most ecologically unusual tetras in the Neotropics — a tiny, roughly 1 in scale-eater that inhabits the pitch-dark, nutrient-stripped blackwaters of the upper Río Negro and Casiquiare basin. The sole member of its genus, it was described by Richard P. Vari in 1986 and is distinguished by outwardly angled teeth adapted for rasping scales from other fish. It belongs to the broader assemblage of lepidophagous characids that have evolved this specialised, uncommonly demanding feeding strategy independently across South American drainages.

Taxonomy & naming

Serrabrycon magoi was described by Richard P. Vari in 1986 in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington (vol. 99, no. 2, pp. 328–334). The type locality is the upper Río Negro in the Río Casiquiare region of Venezuela. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Serrabrycon Vari, 1986 as the valid genus and S. magoi as its only species — it is a monospecific genus.

Vari's original description highlighted two key characters that distinguish Serrabrycon from other characids: a unique combination of outwardly oriented, scale-scraping teeth and a markedly reduced laterosensory canal system on the head — a reduction associated with the blackwater, mineral-poor environments the fish inhabits. The family placement is Characidae, the largest characid family, within which lepidophagous genera form a loose, polyphyletic assemblage rather than a single clade.

The specific epithet honours Dr. Francisco Mago Leccia, the distinguished Venezuelan ichthyologist who made major contributions to the ichthyology of Venezuelan freshwaters and whose collections and publications informed much subsequent work in the Orinoco and Negro basins.

Morphology

Serrabrycon magoi is a small fish, reaching a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase — placing it among the miniature characids of the Río Negro region. The body form is the typical streamlined tetra shape, laterally compressed with a relatively deep body for its size.

The defining morphological feature is the dentition: the teeth are oriented outward rather than pointing straight into the mouth, forming a scraping edge suited to attacking the flanks of other fish and stripping their scales. This tooth morphology, coupled with the reduced laterosensory canal system noted by Vari, is the diagnostic combination for the genus. Colouration in preserved specimens is unremarkable — a silvery small tetra with minimal markings — and detailed live colour descriptions are sparse in the literature, reflecting how rarely this species is encountered in the aquarium trade.

Habitat

Serrabrycon magoi occurs in the upper Río Negro, Río Casiquiare, and connected Orinoco basin waters of Venezuela and adjacent Brazil — drainages that rank among the most chemically extreme freshwater environments on the planet. These are classic blackwater systems: water stained deep brown by dissolved tannins and humic acids leached from decaying vegetation, with recorded pH values as low as 2.9–4.2 and conductivity near 8 µS, making them almost devoid of dissolved minerals.

Water temperatures run warm, around 82–86 °F, consistent with the equatorial lowland position of the basin. The combination of extreme acidity, negligible conductivity, and high organic load shapes the entire food web of these rivers: invertebrate prey is scarce, and specialised feeding strategies — including lepidophagy — are more common here than in richer whitewater systems. Substrates are typically clean sand or leaf litter, with little aquatic vegetation but abundant overhanging and submerged woody debris providing structure and cover.

Feeding

Serrabrycon magoi is a lepidophage — a scale-eater. It approaches other fish and uses its outwardly angled teeth to scrape or bite scales from their flanks, consuming the scales as a food source. Scale-eating has evolved multiple times in characids; in the nutrient-poor blackwater drainages of the Río Negro it represents one of the more viable feeding specialisations where conventional invertebrate prey is limited.

The precise foraging behaviour in the wild has not been extensively documented in published literature, but the tooth morphology and the analogy with other studied lepidophagous characids suggest a rapid, darting approach to a host fish followed by a quick scraping strike. Scale regrowth in victim fish makes this a renewable resource rather than a lethal interaction in most cases, though heavily parasitised fish in small enclosures can suffer skin damage.

Mating

No detailed wild observations of mating behaviour in Serrabrycon magoi have been published. As a characid, it almost certainly follows the general pattern of egg-scattering with no parental care — typical for the family, which includes the vast majority of open-water and plant-associated spawners among Neotropical tetras.

Male and female differentiation has not been well characterised in the literature for this species, and the extreme rarity of live specimens in the aquarium trade means that hobbyist observations are essentially absent. Any courtship behaviour would presumably involve the pair moving through open water or along submerged surfaces, with eggs scattered freely without adhesion or nest construction, as in related characids.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Serrabrycon magoi has not been documented in accessible aquarium or scientific literature. The species is essentially absent from the ornamental trade, and no reliable accounts of tank reproduction exist. Based on the family pattern, breeding would be expected to involve egg-scattering over a substrate or open water, with small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults likely eating both eggs and fry if not separated.

The extreme water-chemistry requirements of this species — very low pH, near-zero hardness, warm temperatures — would make replicating blackwater conditions a prerequisite for any serious breeding attempt. Collectors who have encountered the species in the field report it as uncommon even within its native range.

In the aquarium

Serrabrycon magoi is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade and is not a fish kept by the generalist hobbyist. Its lepidophagous feeding strategy makes it incompatible with normal community tanks: it will attack and remove scales from any tankmates, causing stress and injury. A species-only setup, or one restricted to similarly sized or larger fish tolerant of occasional scale-biting, would be necessary — but even then its extreme water-chemistry requirements present a substantial barrier.

Recreating the blackwater conditions of the upper Río Negro demands very soft, acidic water (pH below 4.5, conductivity in single-digit µS range), near-pristine filtration without buffering media, and temperatures at the warm end around 82–86 °F. Peat filtration, RO water, and leaf litter tannin supplementation are the standard tools for approximating these parameters. The species would be of interest primarily to specialist blackwater keepers and those focused on biotope accuracy rather than community display aquaria.

Conservation

Serrabrycon magoi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2021. The Least Concern designation reflects the species' occurrence across a broad arc of the upper Río Negro and Orinoco systems — a large, largely intact wilderness area — without evidence of population decline severe enough to approach threat thresholds.

The blackwater drainages of the upper Río Negro and Casiquiare remain among the least-disturbed large river systems in the Amazon basin. Deforestation and gold mining (garimpo) activity do threaten parts of the Venezuelan and Brazilian Amazon, and mercury contamination from illegal mining is a documented concern in the upper Negro basin. However, the species' current range is large enough that these localised pressures do not yet compromise its overall status. Continued monitoring of the Negro and Orinoco headwater systems remains important as extractive pressures in the region increase.
