Described only in 2019 from turbulent rapids where the Casiquiare Canal meets the upper Río Negro, Ancistrus leoni is a specialist of extreme-flow environments that has not yet reached the ornamental trade. Its notably small tentacles relative to most Ancistrus and its exceptionally flat body profile point to a life wedged beneath rocks in fast-moving blackwater — a microhabitat that presents serious logistical challenges both for collectors and for researchers.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus leoni was described by Leandro S. de Souza, Donald C. Taphorn, and Jonathan W. Armbruster in 2019 as one of six new species in a comprehensive review of Ancistrus from the northwestern Guiana Shield, Orinoco Andes, and adjacent basins, published in Zootaxa 4552(1): 1–67. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus leoni as a valid species. The type series was collected at the Río Negro, approximately 1 mi downstream of the mouth of the Casiquiare canal, in the Atabapo District of Amazonas State, Venezuela (1.987611°N, -67.120250°W).

The genus Ancistrus Kner, 1854 belongs to tribe Ancistrini, subfamily Hypostominae, within Loricariidae. Armbruster's 2004 phylogenetic work remains a foundational reference for loricariid higher classification. Within Ancistrus, A. leoni belongs to a group of Guiana Shield and upper Orinoco/Negro species characterised by high-flow specialisation and, in this taxon, notably reduced tentacles relative to congeners.

The specific epithet leoni honours Ing. RNR Oscar León Mata (1964–2018), a Venezuelan ichthyologist who collected the type series and contributed substantially to the documentation of Amazonian and Orinoquian fishes before his death in 2018. The name is a Latin genitive: leoni = 'of León'.

Morphology

Adults reach up to 3 in standard length (SL). The body plan is exceptionally depressed (flattened dorso-ventrally), more so than most Ancistrus — a morphological adaptation hypothesised to allow the fish to shelter under rocks in very high-velocity currents where more rounded-bodied congeners could not maintain position. Bony scute armour covers the dorsal and lateral surfaces in the standard loricariid fashion; the abdomen is unarmoured.

Colouration details are sparse in available literature, but the species' close relatives in the Guiana Shield complex are typically brown with pale spotting, and A. leoni is unlikely to differ markedly. The tentacles of A. leoni are notably smaller than in most congeners — both in absolute terms and relative to body size — which the authors noted as a diagnostic character distinguishing it from sympatric and nearby Ancistrus.

Sexual dimorphism follows the genus-wide pattern: mature males bear branched, fleshy tentacles on the snout that are more developed than those of females, though as noted, even male tentacles in this species are modest compared to larger-tentacled relatives such as Ancistrus dolichopterus. As in all Ancistrus, females develop at most minor tentacle margins. An adipose fin is present.

Habitat

The type locality is a stretch of the upper Río Negro near the mouth of the Casiquiare, one of the world's unique natural canal systems connecting the Orinoco and Amazon drainages. This region is characterised by blackwater chemistry: very low pH (often below 5.0), minimal dissolved minerals, and high dissolved organic carbon from tannin-rich rainforest drainage. Water velocity at the type locality is high — swift rapids that the describing authors cited as the probable explanation for the species' extreme body flattening.

The IUCN assessment (2020) notes the species occurs in permanently swift rapids in the upper Orinoco and Negro river basins, and that its very flat body is consistent with life under rocks in very high-flow conditions. The high ambient oxygen levels of turbulent whitecapped rapids likely make facultative air-breathing unnecessary; unlike some Ancistrus from sluggish or seasonally hypoxic waters, A. leoni probably relies on dissolved oxygen rather than accessory air-breathing.

The extent of occurrence is estimated at approximately 70,12 mi², with an area of occupancy of 7,345 mi² (IUCN, 2020). Very few collections exist, reflecting the logistical difficulty of sampling swift remote rapids in this region of Amazonas State, Venezuela.

Feeding

No stomach content analyses for A. leoni have been published. Diet can be inferred from the genus: Ancistrus are primarily algal grazers and periphyton scrapers, using the ventral sucker-mouth to rasp biofilm from hard rock surfaces. In swift, well-lit rapids, epilithic algae and the associated biofilm of diatoms and bacteria represent an abundant and renewable food resource.

Flecker et al. (2002), in a study of loricariid trophic ecology in Neotropical rivers, documented the importance of periphyton for scrapers in high-flow environments, and A. leoni almost certainly falls in this feeding guild. Detritus transported by the current may also contribute to the diet.

No aquarium husbandry data are available for this species, which has not been recorded in the ornamental trade.

Mating

No observations of mating behaviour in A. leoni have been published or reported in the aquarium hobby. Courtship and mate-choice behaviour can be extrapolated from the genus-level pattern: males establish and defend territories around rocky crevices or under flat boulders, with the branched snout tentacles serving roles in intersexual signalling and possibly predator deflection. Given the modest tentacle development in this species relative to congeners, the degree to which tentacle elaboration influences mate choice in A. leoni specifically is unknown.

The swift-rapids microhabitat likely constrains cavity availability differently than the root tangles and log jams used by lowland Ancistrus — suitable nest sites under flat boulders may be a limiting resource in this high-flow environment.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Ancistrus leoni has been reported. As with all members of the genus, cave spawning with paternal brood care is the expected mode: the male selects and defends a cavity, the female deposits adhesive eggs inside, and the male fans and guards the clutch until the fry absorb their yolk reserves and begin independent feeding.

For genus-level context, Sabaj et al. (1999) documented Ancistrus spawning behaviour and proposed that the male's fleshy tentacles may function as larval mimics, reducing predation pressure on the guarded nest. Whether males of A. leoni, with their smaller tentacles, show the same behaviour or a reduced version of it remains uninvestigated.

The PlanetCatfish database lists no registered keepers or breeding reports for this species as of 2026.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus leoni has not been recorded in the ornamental fish trade and is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. No hobbyist accounts, pH or temperature data from captive specimens, or breeding reports exist. Given the species' collection from remote, swift blackwater rapids and its apparent specialisation for very high-flow, very soft, acidic conditions, it would not be straightforward to keep even if specimens became available.

A hypothetical husbandry approach based on its wild habitat would involve very soft, acidic water (pH likely 4.5–6.0, very low hardness), strong turbulent flow from powerful circulation equipment, and smooth rocks as grazing surface. The extremely flat body profile suggests the fish require crevice-like shelters closely mimicking the underside of flat boulders in rapids — standard cave tubes may not be accepted. Until the species enters the trade and hobbyists gain direct experience, all husbandry details remain speculative.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus leoni as Least Concern in July 2020, with the population trend listed as unknown. The Least Concern designation reflects the large estimated extent of occurrence (approximately 70,12 mi²) and the occurrence of the species within protected areas with limited human influence.

That said, the IUCN assessors noted that few collections exist and that the species inhabits very swift rapids that are difficult to sample — meaning data are genuinely sparse rather than indicative of abundance. Illegal gold, coltan, diamond, and bauxite mining operations in Amazonas State, Venezuela are an active threat to waterways in this region: bank erosion, mercury pollution from artisanal gold extraction, and elevated sediment turbidity are documented impacts on upper Orinoco and Negro tributaries. Industrial effluent seepage adds further pressure. The species' restriction to swift, well-oxygenated rapids makes it potentially sensitive to any reduction in water quality or flow regime caused by mining-related disturbance upstream.
