Taxonomy & naming
Thayeria ifati was described by Jacques Géry in 1959. The holotype was collected from the upper Rio Maroni near Gaa Kabaon, a site on the French Guiana–Suriname border, by Géry himself during a 1957 expedition. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Thayeria ifati Géry, 1959.
The species belongs to the small genus Thayeria, whose members share an oblique, caudally-directed dark lateral stripe and a characteristic tilted resting posture — the head-up angle that earns the group the vernacular name 'penguin tetras'. Thayeria is currently placed within the family Characidae, though recent molecular work continues to refine higher-level relationships within the Characiformes. Within Thayeria, T. ifati is distinguished from the wider-ranging T. boehlkei primarily by the abbreviated extent of its lateral stripe, which terminates before the caudal peduncle rather than continuing into the lower lobe of the tail fin.
Morphology
Thayeria ifati is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching a maximum of approximately 1.5 in standard length. The body is compressed and elongate, pale silvery to cream on the flanks, with the typical characid forked tail. The most diagnostic feature is the dark horizontal stripe that runs from behind the gill cover along the flank but stops at roughly mid-body or just past it — shorter and less complete than the stripe in T. boehlkei, which extends into the lower caudal lobe.
Like its congeners, T. ifati adopts a distinctive oblique, head-up posture when stationary or moving slowly through the water column. This upward tilt is particularly pronounced at rest. Females are generally slightly deeper-bodied than males, especially when gravid, but differences between the sexes are otherwise modest in this species.
Habitat
In the wild Thayeria ifati is native to the Maroni and Approuague River basins of French Guiana in northeastern South America. These are Guiana Shield drainages, characterised by a mix of blackwater and clearwater streams flowing over sandy or rocky substrates beneath gallery forest. Water conditions in such systems are typically warm, soft, and acidic, though pH can approach neutral in some areas.
FishBase records the species from water with temperatures of 73–82 °F (73–82 °F), pH 6.0–7.2, and hardness up to 12 dH — consistent with the moderate-acidity, low-mineral conditions typical of Guiana lowland streams. The species likely inhabits mid-water to upper-water zones in slower-flowing stretches and marginal areas with overhanging vegetation, as is typical for shoaling tetras in these systems.
Feeding
Thayeria ifati is an opportunistic micropredator in the wild, foraging on small insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates near the water surface and in the mid-water column. The Guiana stream habitats it occupies deliver a seasonal supply of terrestrial insects falling from overhanging forest canopy, and aquatic invertebrates form a significant part of the diet.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of small prepared and live foods. Live or frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) are relished and keep fish in good condition. A base of quality fine flake or micro-pellets supplemented with these live and frozen foods suits the species well. Its small mouth limits the size of food items it can take, so finely crushed or purpose-sized particles are preferred.
Mating
Thayeria ifati is an egg-scattering, open-water spawner typical of small characids from its region. No specific mating documentation in captivity has been published for this species, but its close relationship with T. boehlkei and shared genus traits indicate it follows the same general pattern: loose pair or group spawning over fine-leaved aquatic plants or among soft substrates, with eggs scattered and left unguarded.
As with congeners, males likely pursue females actively and spawning activity peaks in the early morning hours. The species is not known to form tight pair bonds; rather, groups of fish participate in scattered, overlapping spawning events. The absence of captive-breeding records means the precise triggers and courtship behaviours specific to T. ifati remain undescribed.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Thayeria ifati has not been documented in the published literature as of this writing, in contrast to the more popular T. boehlkei, which breeds readily in the hobby. Given the shared genus biology, breeding conditions similar to those used for T. boehlkei would be a reasonable starting point: soft, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0–6.8, hardness below 8 dH), temperature in the upper end of the species range (around 79–82 °F), fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, and conditioning on live and frozen foods.
By analogy with other Thayeria, eggs would be small, adhesive, and scattered loosely among vegetation; the adults show no parental care and will consume eggs given the opportunity. Separating eggs to a hatching vessel and raising fry on infusoria and rotifers graduating to Artemia nauplii would be the standard approach. Aquarists successfully spawning this species would be making a meaningful contribution given the scarcity of documented captive breeding records.
In the aquarium
Thayeria ifati is an uncommon but periodically available aquarium fish, more often encountered in specialist collections than in general trade, where T. boehlkei dominates the 'penguin tetra' market. When kept well it is a peaceful, active shoaling fish suited to a softwater community aquarium. A group of at least six individuals is recommended to bring out natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress; the tilted resting posture of the genus is most evident in a relaxed, well-established group.
Water chemistry should reflect the species' Guiana origins: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.2, dH up to 12) at 73–82 °F suits it well. Subdued lighting, dark substrate, and the addition of dried leaves or peat filtration to tint the water amber all help replicate the natural environment and bring out the best colour and behaviour. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful; the species' small size makes it vulnerable to larger, more boisterous fish. Good filtration with gentle flow and regular partial water changes are the basic requirements for long-term success.
Conservation
Thayeria ifati is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated December 2020. The species has a reasonable distribution across multiple river basins in French Guiana, and no major range-wide threats have been identified that would place it in a more precarious category at this time.
The Maroni and Approuague basins of French Guiana remain relatively intact compared to heavily deforested parts of the Amazon lowlands, and French Guiana's status as an overseas territory of France affords some regulatory protection. Nonetheless, the Guiana Shield region faces incremental pressures from gold mining, deforestation, and river sedimentation, which affect water quality and stream habitats throughout the region. The species is rare in the aquarium trade, and the available stock appears to be wild-caught rather than captive-bred; hobbyist interest in establishing a captive-breeding line would reduce any collecting pressure on wild populations.
