Taxonomy & naming
Thayeria boehlkei was described by Stanley H. Weitzman in 1957. The genus Thayeria sits within the large and diverse family Characidae, the characins, which spans tropical and subtropical South America and Africa. The genus is small, containing only a handful of species, all sharing the characteristic black lateral stripe and angled swimming posture that distinguish them from other small tetras.
The specific epithet boehlkei honours the American ichthyologist James E. Böhlke and his wife, both contributors to Neotropical ichthyology. The genus name Thayeria commemorates Nathaniel Thayer Jr., a nineteenth-century American philanthropist who supported natural-history expeditions. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name Thayeria boehlkei Weitzman, 1957.
The most closely related species in the aquarium hobby is Thayeria obliqua, which carries a similar stripe but differs in its extent and body proportions; T. boehlkei is the species most frequently sold under the trade name 'penguin tetra', though misidentification between the two occurs in the hobby.
Morphology
Thayeria boehlkei is a slender, moderately compressed characid reaching approximately 2.5–3 in in total length, with FishBase citing a maximum of 2.5 in TL and Seriously Fish reporting specimens to 3 in. The body is silvery with a faint yellowish or greenish iridescence along the flanks under good lighting. A narrow dark stripe runs from approximately the mid-body or gill cover to the base of the tail, then hooks sharply downward through the lower lobe of the forked caudal fin — the 'hockey stick' marking that gives the fish its alternative common name.
The lower lobe of the caudal fin is slightly longer than the upper, an asymmetry associated with the species' characteristic resting and cruising posture: the head is held noticeably higher than the tail, so the fish angles through the water at roughly 35–45 degrees to the horizontal. This posture is passive — maintained even when still — and is believed to reflect the position in which the fish hangs motionless near the surface or among vegetation to avoid detection. Sexes are similar in colour; females are generally fuller-bodied when gravid, the most reliable indicator of sex in a group of adult fish.
Habitat
In the wild, Thayeria boehlkei is found in the upper Amazon River basin of Peru and in the Araguaia River system of Brazil. Fishipedia also records Colombia within the distribution. The species occupies tropical freshwater environments including jungle streams, flooded wetlands with aquatic and marginal vegetation, and slow-moving or standing water bodies where cover is available.
Reported water parameters from FishBase and Seriously Fish bracket the species' tolerance: temperatures from 72–82 °F (72–82 °F), pH 5.5 to 8.0, and general hardness up to roughly 19–20 dH. The fish is pelagic and shoals in the middle to upper water column, often near the surface or among floating and fine-leaved submerged vegetation. In its natural haunts it shares water with a diverse assemblage of other characids, cichlids, and small catfishes typical of Amazonian lowland and foothill streams.
Feeding
Thayeria boehlkei is a micropredator and opportunistic carnivore in the wild, feeding on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and other small invertebrates encountered in the water column and at the surface. Seriously Fish describes the natural diet as insects, worms, crustaceans, and small invertebrates; FishBase similarly notes worms, small insects, and crustaceans.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a wide range of foods. Good-quality flake or micro-pellets form a serviceable staple, but colour, condition, and breeding activity all improve with regular offerings of live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and mosquito larvae. The angled swimming posture means the fish feeds most naturally from the middle and upper water column rather than from the substrate; surface-feeding or mid-water sinking foods suit it better than bottom-sinking pellets.
Mating
Thayeria boehlkei is an egg-scattering species with no pair bond and no parental care. In nature and in the aquarium, groups spawn communally or in loose pairs rather than forming lasting associations. Males may chase and nudge females during courtship, particularly when water conditions are good — a slight drop in temperature, the addition of soft water, or a morning light cycle often triggers spawning activity.
The species shows no strongly seasonal spawning trigger in the aquarium, and well-conditioned adults in appropriate water may spawn intermittently throughout the year. Males in breeding condition are slimmer than ripe females, which become noticeably deep-bodied in the belly when full of eggs. No elaborate courtship display comparable to that seen in cichlids or labyrinth fish is known; the interaction is brief and energetic, with the pair or group swimming rapidly among vegetation before eggs are released.
Breeding
Spawning involves the release of semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or synthetic spawning mops. Seriously Fish reports that eggs hatch in 12–24 hours, while FishBase notes a hatching time of 20–24 hours; the difference likely reflects water temperature, with warmer water accelerating development. Fry become free-swimming approximately 3–4 days after hatching.
For deliberate breeding, a separate, dimly lit tank of around 10–15 US gal fitted with a sponge filter, fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or Cabomba, and slightly acidic to neutral, soft water works well. Condition the adult group on varied live and frozen foods for 1–2 weeks beforehand, then transfer several adults into the breeding tank in the evening. Remove adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. First foods for the fry should be very fine — infusoria or a commercial liquid fry food — before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered flake within the first week or two. The species is among the more straightforward small tetras to breed in captivity, and tank-bred specimens are widely available in the trade.
In the aquarium
Thayeria boehlkei is a peaceful, active schooling fish well suited to a community aquarium. It should be kept in groups of at least six, and preferably eight or more, as solitary or small-group individuals become shy and lose the animated schooling behaviour that makes the species appealing. A tank of 15–20 US gal or larger allows a proper school to move freely; the fish are strong swimmers and appreciate open midwater swimming space alongside planted margins and floating plants that dim the light and provide a sense of security.
Water chemistry should fall within the species' broad natural range: 72–82 °F (72–82 °F), pH 5.5–8.0, and soft to moderately hard water. The fish is adaptable and tolerates a wider range than many Amazonian tetras, making it suitable for a variety of tap-water conditions provided extremes are avoided. Compatible tankmates include other peaceful mid-water community fish of similar size — small rasboras, other tetras, Corydoras catfishes, and small peaceful cichlids. The distinctive tilted swimming posture and black-stripe patterning remain on display throughout the day, and the school's synchronised movements are a highlight of any community setup.
Conservation
Thayeria boehlkei is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, a status consistent across the sources consulted. The species has a broad distribution across multiple river systems in Peru and Brazil and is abundant in the ornamental-fish trade, where it has been captively bred in commercial facilities for generations. The wide availability of tank-bred stock reduces collection pressure on wild populations.
No significant range-wide threats have been identified that would push the species toward a more threatened category. As with all Amazonian freshwater fish, habitat degradation through deforestation, siltation of streams, and alteration of floodplain hydrology pose background risks, but these are not considered to drive population-level declines for a species with such a wide natural distribution. Aquarists purchasing captive-bred specimens, which are the norm in the hobby, contribute nothing to wild collection pressure.
