Tyttocharax madeirae is a small, slender characid reaching just 1.5 in standard length, collected from tributaries of the lower and middle Amazon River basin in South America. First described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1913, it remains a little-studied species that inhabits the Madeira drainage — one of the Amazon's most species-rich river systems — where it joins a diverse assemblage of small tetras in marginal and flooded-forest habitats. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2021, reflecting a widespread distribution across a large and largely intact river system.

Taxonomy & naming

Tyttocharax madeirae was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1913, with the type locality in the Madeira River drainage of Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Tyttocharax madeirae Fowler, 1913.

The genus Tyttocharax belongs to the speciose family Characidae, the cardinal family of Neotropical freshwater fishes encompassing thousands of species from small schooling tetras to larger predatory forms. Within Characidae, Tyttocharax has historically been placed in various subfamilial groupings; the genus is characterised by small body size and certain meristic features separating it from closely related small characid genera of the Amazon basin. Ongoing molecular and morphological revisions of Characidae continue to refine the higher-level placement of genera like Tyttocharax, and its relationships are best understood in the context of the broader Amazon characid radiation.

Morphology

Tyttocharax madeirae is a miniature characid, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in. Like most members of the family, it has the typical tetra body plan: a laterally compressed, streamlined body, a single dorsal fin, a small adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and the characteristic Weberian apparatus connecting the swim bladder to the inner ear.

The common name Blackedge Tetra alludes to a dark pigment pattern along fin margins or body edges, a feature found in several small Amazonian characids. Detailed meristic and morphometric data for the species are sparse in the freely accessible literature, and the species has not been the subject of a dedicated morphological revision in recent years. It is a small, plainly patterned fish by the standards of Amazonian tetras, and its identification in the field would rely on a combination of body proportions, fin-ray counts, and pigmentation.

Habitat

In captivity, sustained conditions — warm, soft, slightly acid water and good feeding — often bring small characids into spawning condition year-round.

Breeding

No captive-breeding account for Tyttocharax madeirae appears in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. General care and breeding for a small Amazonian characid of this type would follow patterns well established for related species: spawning over fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop in soft, warm, slightly acidic water, with adults removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Eggs in small Amazonian characids typically hatch within 24–48 hours depending on temperature, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later. First foods are infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, progressing to Artemia nauplii as the fry grow. T. madeirae's small adult size suggests the fry will be correspondingly tiny at hatching, requiring very fine first foods.

In the aquarium

Tyttocharax madeirae is not an established aquarium fish in the hobby and is essentially unknown in the trade. It is a specimen-level species — collected as part of ichthyological surveys of the Amazon basin — rather than a species that has found its way into commercial or enthusiast fishkeeping.

Should it become available, a small blackwater-style aquarium with soft, warm, slightly acidic water, dim lighting, a dark substrate, and fine-leaved planting would replicate conditions from the Madeira drainage and suit this miniature tetra. A school of six or more individuals would allow natural schooling behaviour. Its 1.5 in maximum size places it firmly in the nano and micro-tetra category, making it compatible with other small, gentle Amazonian species. Detailed maintenance parameters remain largely undocumented.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Tyttocharax madeirae as Least Concern (LC) in March 2021 (assessment ID 160420234, species ID 49829735). This status reflects a distribution across the tributaries of the lower and middle Amazon River basin — a large river system that retains extensive natural habitat — with no evidence of population declines sufficient to approach threatened thresholds.

The broader Amazon basin faces ongoing deforestation, river impoundment, agricultural runoff, and gold-mining impacts — threats that affect many species in the region even when their IUCN status remains Least Concern. For a small, widely distributed characid like T. madeirae, habitat integrity across its range provides a reasonable buffer, but continued monitoring of Amazonian freshwater biodiversity remains important as land-use change accelerates across the basin.
