Tyttocharax metae was described in 2012 by Román-Valencia, García-Alzate, Ruiz-C. & Taphorn from material collected in the Río Güejar drainage, a tributary of the Río Meta in the Orinoco basin, within Meta State of Colombia near the La Macarena mountain range. The genus Tyttocharax belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a small number of diminutive South American characins. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name.
The specific epithet metae refers to the Meta River system (Río Meta) of Colombia, the major basin into which the Río Güejar flows and within whose watershed the type specimens were collected. The genus name Tyttocharax combines the Greek tyttos (small, tiny) with charax (a kind of fish, used broadly in characid nomenclature), effectively marking it as a dwarf member of the broader lineage. No synonyms have been recorded under this name.
Morphology
Tyttocharax metae is an extremely small fish, with a maximum recorded standard length of 0.5 in, placing it firmly in the micro-characin size range. The body plan is typical of the group: laterally compressed and somewhat slender, with the large eyes and relatively deep head that characterise many tiny characins adapted to picking small invertebrate prey from the water column and substrate.
Detailed morphological data for this species remain sparse in the accessible literature beyond the original description. As a micro-predatory characin it is presumed to share the general family traits of a terminal mouth, small but present teeth, a visible lateral line, and an adipose fin — features near-universal in Characidae. Coloration in life is not thoroughly documented for hobbyist audiences; most small Tyttocharax are translucent to silvery, with any lateral banding or fin markings being subtle.
Habitat
The known range of Tyttocharax metae is confined to the Río Güejar system within Meta State, Colombia, in the foothills and lower slopes of the La Macarena mountain massif — a region where the eastern Andes transition to the Orinoco llanos. This is a biologically extraordinary area: the Sierra de La Macarena is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and its streams shelter unusually high levels of endemic freshwater biodiversity.
FishBase records the species as a freshwater demersal fish occupying depths from 0–10 ft, with a pH range of 7.1–7.6 and a tropical temperature regime. The near-neutral water chemistry reflects the mixed geology of this transitional zone — neither the highly acidic blackwaters of the lowland llanos nor the alkaline conditions of hard-rock Andean streams. Substrates in Güejar-system streams are typically coarse sand and gravel, with riparian cover providing shade and leaf litter.

Its extreme small size (under 1 in) would make it a specialist interest even if it were available, requiring a nano or species-only aquarium with appropriately scaled food and tankmates that pose no predatory threat.

The Río Güejar drains part of the Sierra de La Macarena, a legally protected area in Meta Department, but buffer zones around the reserve face significant pressure from coca cultivation, cattle ranching, and associated road development. Foothill streams that micro-endemic species depend on are sensitive to sedimentation, agrochemical runoff, and flow alteration from land clearing. Because Tyttocharax metae is known from a small geographic area with no confirmed populations elsewhere, any decline in Güejar-system water quality represents a direct threat to the entire species. Its obscurity in the hobby means no captive insurance population exists outside specialist research contexts.
