Xenurobrycon polyancistrus was described by Stanley H. Weitzman in 1987, with the original description published in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington (vol. 100, no. 1). The type locality lies in the Río Mamoré basin of Bolivia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Xenurobrycon polyancistrus Weitzman, 1987; the authority is not parenthetical because the species has remained in the genus as originally described.
The genus Xenurobrycon is a small, highly specialised characid genus. Its placement has shifted across classifications as molecular and morphological work on the broader characiform tree has progressed; some modern treatments nest it within Stevardiidae rather than treating it as a core characid, reflecting the complex history of the family-level systematics of South American characiforms. For this atlas the family is listed as Characidae in accordance with the broadest conventional usage. X. polyancistrus is one of the smallest species in its family and arguably among the smallest characiforms overall, a distinction that has given it a degree of notoriety disproportionate to the small number of specimens examined.
Morphology
Xenurobrycon polyancistrus reaches approximately 0.5 in standard length — a size that places it among the tiniest characiforms on record. The body conforms to the general characid plan: moderately elongate, laterally compressed, with a small terminal mouth and the adipose fin that is a hallmark of the family. At its minute size, most of the hard morphological characters that distinguish it from relatives require microscopy or close examination of cleared-and-stained preparations rather than casual field observation.
Living colouration in this species is poorly documented in the published literature accessible through currently available sources. What is known derives primarily from preserved type specimens and the small number of observed individuals. The species name polyancistrus refers to multiple hooks or spines (Greek poly-, many; ankistron, hook), a reference to morphological features described in the original diagnosis — likely specialised hooks associated with reproductive structures, as is known in other stevardiid relatives — rather than to colouration or body shape per se.
Habitat
Xenurobrycon polyancistrus has been collected from gallery-forest pools and flooded habitats adjacent to rivers in savanna landscapes, within the Río Mamoré and Río Isiboro drainages of Bolivia and the Río Madre de Dios drainage of Peru. These environments are characterised by shallow, heavily vegetated standing or very slow-moving water under or beside gallery forest — a microhabitat that buffers temperature and light compared with the open savanna, and one that many miniature characiforms exploit.
The Río Mamoré system drains a large area of the Bolivian lowlands before joining the Madeira, one of the most biodiverse Amazonian tributaries. The gallery-forest pool habitat in which this species lives is seasonal in nature: water levels fluctuate markedly with the Andean-influenced wet season, and the pools may contract or expand considerably through the year. Precise water-chemistry data for the type locality are not available in currently cached sources, but lowland Amazonian gallery pools in this region are typically soft and slightly acidic to neutral, with warm temperatures in the tropical range.
Feeding
No detailed dietary studies of Xenurobrycon polyancistrus are documented in the sources available for this article. Based on the ecology of similar miniature characiforms from comparable gallery-forest pool habitats, the species is presumed to feed on small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and similar zooplankton-scale prey — that are abundant in vegetated, slow-water environments.
In the aquarium, where the species is rarely kept, the practical challenge is the fish's very small gape. Standard aquarium prepared foods are too large; successful keeping requires microfoods such as infusoria, paramecia, microworms, or specialist micro-pellets. Given the size constraint, feeding frequency matters: multiple small offerings through the day better match the species' metabolic needs than single large feedings.
Mating
The reproductive biology of Xenurobrycon polyancistrus has received limited documentation in the accessible literature. Within the broader Stevardiidae, many species possess specialised reproductive structures — hook-like scales, spines, or glands associated with sperm transfer or egg adhesion — and the species name polyancistrus (many hooks) may allude to such features in this species, as described in Weitzman's 1987 diagnosis.
Based on the ecology of related taxa, X. polyancistrus is assumed to be an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, likely depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or root masses in its gallery-forest pool habitat. Detailed observations of courtship behaviour in the wild or in captivity are not available in currently cached sources.
Breeding

For any hobbyist who does obtain specimens, the approach for miniature characiforms from Amazonian gallery-forest habitats would logically involve soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, heavily planted shallow quarters, and very fine live or frozen foods for conditioning. Egg adhesion to fine-leaved plants or spawning mops would be the expected mode; fry at this scale would require the smallest available first foods. In the aquarium
Xenurobrycon polyancistrus is an extreme rarity in the aquarium trade and is essentially absent from the commercial hobby. It does not appear in standard hobby literature as a kept species, and its 0.5 in adult size presents real practical challenges: suitable tankmates must be very small and non-aggressive, water quality must be pristine, and food must be appropriately sized for a fish barely larger than many aquarium microorganisms.
For specialist nano-aquarists or researchers who do maintain the species, a densely planted nano aquarium with very gentle filtration, soft and warm water approximating Amazonian gallery-pool conditions, and a diet of live microfoods would represent the best-informed approach. The species' extreme small size means that even standard community nano fish such as ember tetras or pygmy corydoras may be too large to be safe or non-stressful tankmates; conspecific groups or other genuinely micro-scale species would be the safest combination. Its interest is primarily scientific and for the specialist collector of micro-characiforms rather than the mainstream aquarist.
Conservation
Xenurobrycon polyancistrus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment referenced to the 2022.2 update. The LC designation reflects that the species is not believed to face the level of range restriction, population decline, or habitat threat that would qualify it for a threatened category under IUCN criteria, despite being known from a relatively restricted area of the Bolivian and Peruvian Amazon.
The Río Mamoré and Río Madre de Dios drainages lie within lowland Bolivia and Peru, areas that face ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, deforestation of gallery-forest margins, and changes to flooding regimes. However, these pressures have not yet been assessed as sufficient to threaten this species at the population level. Given how few specimens have been examined scientifically, any assessment carries inherent uncertainty: a species known from scattered museum lots may appear more secure than it truly is simply because its population is poorly monitored. Continued collection and documentation of this and similar micro-characiforms from Amazonian gallery habitats would improve the evidential basis for future assessments.
