Xenurobrycon pteropus was described by Stanley H. Weitzman and William L. Fink in 1985. The type locality is Fonte Boa, state of Amazonas, Brazil, on the upper Amazon River drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Xenurobrycon pteropus Weitzman & Fink, 1985. The species was originally placed in the family Characidae, and the ETYFish Project notes that the genus Xenurobrycon has at times been associated with a broader stevardiid or glandulocaudine lineage within the Characidae; the top-level family assignment follows Catalog of Fishes usage.
The genus Xenurobrycon belongs to a group of neotropical miniaturized characids characterized by extreme dwarfism and modifications to fin morphology. It is a small genus of closely related species found in Amazonian and Orinoco drainages.
Morphology
Xenurobrycon pteropus is one of the smallest known tetras, reaching a maximum of approximately 0.5 in standard length in males; females may be marginally larger as is common in miniaturized characids. The body is slender and fusiform, with the lateral compression typical of small characins.
The specific epithet pteropus — from Greek pteron (wing) and pous (foot) — refers to the modified pelvic fin, which is homologous to a foot and has a wing-like appearance. This fin modification is characteristic of the genus and distinguishes Xenurobrycon from superficially similar miniaturized tetras. At this scale, meristic characters such as scale and fin-ray counts are the primary diagnostic tools; published data for this species remain sparse in the hobby literature.
Habitat
Xenurobrycon pteropus is known from Fonte Boa in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, in the upper Amazon basin. It inhabits freshwater streams characterized as still or slow-moving and nutrient-poor — the blackwater or clearwater forest streams typical of much of lowland Amazonia, where tannins and humic acids from leaf litter acidify the water and depress conductivity.
Its benthopelagic habits place it near the substrate and among leaf litter and fine detritus, where miniaturized fishes often find refugia from larger predators and access to microinvertebrate food sources unavailable to bigger species. Like other miniaturized Amazonian tetras, it likely exploits the shallow margins of small igarapé streams and flooded forest pools.
Feeding
No detailed dietary studies of Xenurobrycon pteropus in the wild appear to be available in the accessible literature. By analogy with other miniaturized benthopelagic characids of similar size and habitat, the species is presumed to feed on very small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, midge larvae, ostracods, and other meiofaunal organisms — along with fine organic detritus associated with the leaf-litter substrate.
In captivity, species of this size generally require correspondingly small live or frozen foods: infusoria, copepods, small Daphnia, baby brine shrimp nauplii, and similar microfoods. Standard dry foods formulated for nano fish may be accepted, but live and frozen items are important for maintaining condition in such small species.
Mating
No detailed observations of mating behaviour in Xenurobrycon pteropus have been published in the sources available. As a characid, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer practising open spawning, consistent with the reproductive strategy of the vast majority of small tetras. Males of miniaturized Amazonian characids in related genera have been documented using modified fin structures in courtship displays, and the pelvic-fin modification implied by the species name may play a role in pre-spawning behaviour.
Soft, acidic water with very low carbonate and general hardness is expected to be important for conditioning, following the pattern of related blackwater-adapted miniaturized tetras from similar Amazonian habitats.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Xenurobrycon pteropus appear in the accessible hobby or scientific literature; the species is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade. Based on the biology of comparable miniaturized Amazonian tetras, breeding is expected to involve egg-scattering among fine-leaved plants or leaf litter, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs and no parental care.
At 0.5 in maximum size, fry would be exceptionally small and would require very fine first foods. Soft, acid water with negligible hardness — matching the nutrient-poor forest-stream conditions of the type locality — would be the starting point for any captive breeding attempt. Sensitivity to organic waste accumulation, typical of blackwater-adapted nano fish, should be expected.
In the aquarium
Xenurobrycon pteropus is virtually absent from the aquarium hobby. It has not been commercially collected or bred in any quantity, and hobbyists are unlikely to encounter it. Its tiny adult size of around 0.5 in and its apparent restriction to nutrient-poor Amazonian forest streams make it a specialist fish even by the standards of nano tetras.
Were it to become available, maintenance would require a mature, well-established aquarium of small volume with soft, acidic, low-conductivity water, very gentle filtration, and live or frozen microfoods. It should be kept away from larger tankmates capable of harassing or consuming it. Conditions analogous to those used for other blackwater nano tetras and micro-rasboras — dim lighting, a dark substrate, leaf litter, and tannin-stained water — would provide the closest approximation to its natural environment.
Conservation
Xenurobrycon pteropus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded in the 2022 Red List database (version 2022.2). The Least Concern designation reflects the absence of evidence for population decline at a rate that would trigger a threatened category, and the species' occurrence within the broadly intact forests of the upper Amazon basin.
Nonetheless, the accessible range data are limited, and the species' apparent restriction to a specialist microhabitat — nutrient-poor blackwater forest streams — means that continued forest clearance and stream degradation in Amazonia remain potential long-term pressures. The species' commercial and hobby significance is negligible, so collection pressure is not a concern.
