Taxonomy & naming
Barbus cyclolepis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1837, placing it in the genus Barbus, where it has remained under the Catalog of Fishes. The genus Barbus sensu stricto is now understood in a restricted sense, referring primarily to European barbels — the same lineage as the common barbel Barbus barbus — as opposed to the much larger paraphyletic assemblage of African and Asian small barbs that were historically lumped under the same name.
The taxonomy of Balkan Barbus is complex, with a number of closely related species and possible subspecies occurring in adjacent drainages. The Discover Life database notes that forms such as Barbus sperchiensis, Barbus strumicae and Barbus waleckii have been treated variably as synonyms or close relatives within the Balkan peninsula. Life-history research in Greek Macedonia (documented in published studies on B. peloponnesius and B. cyclolepis together) reflects the biogeographic overlap and morphological similarity within this group.
Barbus cyclolepis belongs to the subfamily Barbinae within the family Cyprinidae.
Morphology
The round-scaled barbel reaches a maximum total length of around 12 in, placing it among the mid-sized European barbels. As the common name suggests, the species has notably round, well-developed scales — a character that contributes to its scientific epithet. The body plan is the streamlined, fusiform shape characteristic of fast-water barbels: elongate and laterally compressed, with a subterminal mouth positioned beneath the snout for bottom feeding, and barbels at the corners of the mouth.
FishBase records a trophic level of 3.0, consistent with a broadly omnivorous to invertivorous diet and a feeding ecology positioned in the lower consumer tiers. Maximum recorded age is six years, with sexual maturity reached at around 3.5 in total length. As with most temperate barbels, females grow larger than males over time and become the dominant size class in older cohorts.
Habitat
Barbus cyclolepis occupies streams and rivers with clear water and well-developed riffle sections — FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic, living in and around the bottom of flowing water over gravel and cobble substrates. It is a fish of temperate, well-oxygenated rivers, consistent with the broader ecology of European Barbus species that favour the fast, clean headwaters and middle reaches of rivers rather than sluggish lowland channels.
The IUCN assessment places its native range in the Aegean Sea basin from the Vistonis drainage eastward through rivers of northeastern Greece and Bulgaria, and into the Black Sea basin in a limited number of rivers in Thracian Turkey. Rivers of the Maritsa (Evros) system are part of this range, which is reflected in the vernacular name Maritza barbel. This is a continental European freshwater fish of cool, neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard river water typical of Balkan river systems.
Feeding
The round-scaled barbel is an omnivore of the riverbed, foraging with its subterminal, whisker-flanked mouth over gravel and among stones for the invertebrates that characterise the benthic fauna of clean Balkan rivers: insect larvae (including Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera — the stonefly and mayfly nymphs that indicate unpolluted, well-oxygenated water), small crustaceans, worms and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Algae and plant material are also taken opportunistically.
This benthos-focused feeding style is typical of the European barbels, which use touch-sensitive barbels to locate food in low light or turbid conditions and root through fine gravel and detritus with their muscular snouts. The trophic level of 3.0 recorded on FishBase is consistent with this mixed animal-plant diet, placing the species just above the level of strict herbivores.
Mating
Barbus cyclolepis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner of all Barbus species. Spawning is a seasonal event, typically occurring in spring and early summer when rising water temperatures and river conditions trigger reproductive behaviour. Gravid females are pursued by one or more males through the shallower, faster-flowing sections of the river, often over gravel beds or among submerged vegetation and roots.
Eggs and milt are released together during brief contact between a driving male and a female, and the adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among gravel or over the substrate. No pair bond is formed and no territory is held beyond the transient positioning during active spawning. Adults do not guard eggs or larvae, and many eggs are lost to current, predation or disturbance before they hatch.
Breeding
Spawning in the wild takes place over gravel substrates in river shallows — the clean, oxygenated gravel beds that characterise the riffle habitats this species favours. Eggs scattered over or among gravel are left entirely unattended; parental care is absent, as in all members of the European Barbus lineage.
The round-scaled barbel is not an established aquarium species, and detailed captive-breeding data are sparse. Life-history research published on the Greek Macedonian populations documents basic population parameters including age at maturity (around 3.5 in TL) and a maximum recorded lifespan of six years, consistent with a temperate cyprinid of this size class. Reproduction follows the typical seasonal pattern of European barbels, with a single main spawning season per year.
In the aquarium
Barbus cyclolepis is not a species typically encountered in the ornamental fish trade. Its ecological requirements — cool, fast-flowing, heavily oxygenated water with strong current, clean gravel substrate and plenty of swimming space — are demanding relative to those of the tropical barbs commonly kept in aquaria, and its temperate origins mean that standard tropical aquarium temperatures are too warm for sustained health.
For keepers with dedicated cold-water or temperate setups who wish to work with native Balkan cyprinids, the round-scaled barbel would require a large, strongly filtered and aerated tank with significant water movement, neutral to slightly alkaline water chemistry, and cool temperatures in the mid-to-upper teens Celsius. The species is not commercially bred for the trade, and acquisition would depend on permits and collection regulations in the relevant range countries. It is far more significant as a wild species of conservation and ecological interest than as an aquarium fish.
Conservation
Barbus cyclolepis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed on 20 October 2022. The species' range spans the Aegean Sea basin from the Vistonis drainage eastward through northeastern Greece and Bulgaria, and extends into the Black Sea basin in rivers of Thracian Turkey — a distribution across multiple river systems in three countries that provides some resilience against localised threats.
As a clean-water, riffle-dependent fish, the round-scaled barbel is inherently sensitive to the pressures that affect river quality across the Balkans: damming, water extraction, agricultural run-off, and the degradation of riparian zones. These pressures are common to freshwater fish across southeastern Europe. The IUCN's Least Concern status reflects the species' adequate current range, but the ongoing deterioration of riverine habitat quality in the Aegean and Thracian drainages represents a long-term concern for this and other specialist clean-water species of the region.
