Barbus pergamonensis, the Anatolian Barbel, is a small freshwater barbel described by Karaman in 1971 from the Aegean drainage of western Anatolia and the Greek island of Lesbos. It inhabits the upper and middle reaches of cool, well-oxygenated streams draining from the mountains of western Turkey — the Bakir, Gediz, Küçük Menderes and Büyük Menderes (Great Menderes) systems — and their counterpart on Lesbos, the Evergetoulas stream, where it feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates in the benthopelagic zone. A Mediterranean endemic with a naturally restricted range, the species is currently assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, though it faces the suite of pressures common to small-basin endemics across the Aegean rim.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbus pergamonensis was described by Stjepan Stanko Karaman in 1971. The genus Barbus in its strict modern sense is a Palearctic group centred on Europe and western Asia; it is the genus for the true barbels of the Mediterranean and European drainages, and the species here follows that placement as recorded in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names). The epithet pergamonensis refers to Pergamon (modern Bergama), the ancient Anatolian city in the Bakir river basin of western Turkey, near the type locality.

The taxonomic history of the western Anatolian and Aegean barbels is complex. Multiple Barbus species occur in the Aegean drainages of Turkey and the Greek Aegean islands, and they have sometimes been treated as variants of one another or lumped under broader species concepts. GBIF and EUNIS both record Barbus pergamonensis Karaman, 1971 as a valid species. The IUCN assessed it under this name in May 2022.

Morphology

Barbus pergamonensis reaches a maximum recorded length of 6.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase — a moderate size for an Aegean barbel, placing it in the mid-range between the smallest local Barbus and the large-bodied Luciobarbus of major river systems. It has the typical barbel body plan: a somewhat elongated, fusiform profile suited to life in flowing water, with a subterminal or inferior mouth equipped with two pairs of barbels, a robust first dorsal-fin spine, and large scales.

Detailed meristic and colour data for this species are sparse in the available literature; it resembles related Aegean Barbus species in general facies. As with most barbels, sexually ripe females are noticeably deeper-bodied and bulkier than males.

Habitat

This species inhabits streams and upper river sections in the Aegean drainage of western Turkey — the Bakir (Caicus), Gediz (Hermus), Küçük Menderes (Cayster), and Büyük Menderes (Maeander/Great Menderes) river systems — and extends westward across the Aegean Sea to the Evergetoulas stream on Lesbos Island, Greece. These are Mediterranean-climate rivers: warm and reduced in flow through the dry summer, fuller and cooler in winter and spring, flowing through agricultural lowlands and montane terrain.

The species is classified as benthopelagic and prefers permanent water refuges and the cooler stretches of rivers. Western Anatolian streams in this region are generally neutral to moderately alkaline and moderately hard, reflecting the limestone and metamorphic geology of the Aegean massif. Threats research identifies permanent refuges in cooler river stretches as critical for its survival during summer low-water periods.

Feeding

Barbus pergamonensis feeds primarily on zoobenthos — bottom-dwelling invertebrates including insect larvae, crustaceans, worms and other small organisms scraped or sorted from the substrate. This is the typical trophic niche of the barbels, which use their fleshy, barbel-equipped inferior mouths to probe and root through gravel, sand and organic material on the riverbed.

In rivers of the Aegean drainage, seasonal invertebrate production tracks rainfall and river discharge; the diet likely shifts across the year from aquatic insect larvae during high-water periods to algae, detritus and whatever invertebrates persist in low-water refuges through the dry summer. No detailed dietary study is available in the open literature for this species specifically.

Mating

Like all barbels, Barbus pergamonensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of any kind. Courtship in barbels consists of a driving male pursuing a gravid female over the substrate or through aquatic vegetation, and the two release eggs and milt together in brief spawning runs.

Spawning in Mediterranean barbels is typically seasonal, tied to rising water temperatures in spring and early summer and to increased discharge following winter and spring rains. Males at peak condition pursue females actively; no lasting pair bond or territory is established. Eggs are adhesive and fall to the substrate among gravel or plant matter, where they develop without adult attendance.

Breeding

Barbus pergamonensis is an egg-scatterer that provides no parental care. Following the typical barbel pattern, females release adhesive eggs over gravel or other substrate during seasonal spawning events, and neither parent guards the spawn. Adults may consume eggs they encounter after spawning.

The species is not commonly kept or bred in captivity, and detailed aquarium-breeding data are not available. Wild barbels in Mediterranean river systems typically spawn in late spring when water temperatures rise into the teens and twenties Celsius. Fry are entirely independent from hatching and feed on microinvertebrates and algae.

In the aquarium

Barbus pergamonensis is not a species of the mainstream aquarium trade and is essentially absent from hobby circulation. It is a medium-sized river barbel adapted to the seasonal, moderately alkaline freshwaters of the western Anatolian and Aegean drainages — conditions quite different from the warm tropical water of most aquarium fishes.

Should it be encountered by specialist native-fish keepers or European aquarists working with regional fauna, it would require a cool, well-oxygenated tank with good filtration and water movement, a neutral to slightly alkaline and moderately hard water chemistry, and a varied diet of sinking invertebrate foods. It is a gregarious, active fish that would need spacious quarters. Its conservation status as a narrow-range endemic warrants caution about any collection from wild populations.

Conservation

Barbus pergamonensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in May 2022. The species has a naturally limited distribution across a handful of western Anatolian river systems and the island of Lesbos, making it inherently vulnerable to localised stressors even if currently not globally threatened.

The principal threats identified for Aegean and Mediterranean endemic barbels of this type include agricultural and domestic pollution and eutrophication of river systems, water abstraction for irrigation in the water-stressed summer dry season, gravel extraction from riverbeds, and the construction of barriers such as weirs and small dams that fragment habitat and block movement. Permanent water refuges in cooler river stretches are identified as critical; loss of these refuges to water abstraction or pollution poses the most direct risk. Given the species' naturally restricted range, it warrants continued monitoring even under its current Least Concern status.
