Taxonomy & naming
Capoeta aydinensis was described by Turan and colleagues in 2017 in the Turkish Journal of Zoology, based on specimens from the Büyük Menderes River and three associated stream systems — Tersakan, Dalaman, and Namnam — in southwestern Anatolia. The species epithet refers to Aydın Province, the administrative region through which the Büyük Menderes (the ancient Maeander) largely flows.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid combination as Capoeta aydinensis Turan et al., 2017. The genus Capoeta is a western Palearctic group within the family Cyprinidae, distributed from Anatolia and the Caucasus through the Levant and into Central Asia. These are not the tropical Asian barbs familiar from the aquarium trade but robust, often large-bodied rheophilic fishes of Eurasian rivers. The 2017 description separated C. aydinensis from other Aegean-drainage Capoeta on the basis of meristic characters, particularly lateral line scale counts (58–71) and the morphology of the keratinised lower jaw, alongside molecular data.
Morphology
C. aydinensis is a moderately large barb with a typical Capoeta body plan: fusiform, somewhat laterally compressed, and adapted for life in flowing water. The body is brownish dorsally, paler on the flanks, without bold markings. A single pair of maxillary barbels is present — one of the diagnostic characters of the genus. The dorsal fin has a well-developed keel anterior to it, and the last simple dorsal ray is ossified and may be serrated, a character shared across much of the genus.
The most functionally distinctive feature is the lower jaw, which bears a keratinised, hardened cutting edge — an adaptation for scraping biofilm and algae from rock surfaces. The mouth is arched with a convex lower jaw. FishBase records a standard length of up to 9 in for typical fish; an exceptional specimen of 17 in total length weighing 1,040 g was documented from Gökova Bay in 2020, suggesting the species can attain substantial size in productive conditions.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Büyük Menderes basin and associated drainages (Tersakan, Dalaman, Namnam streams) in Muğla and Aydın provinces of southwestern Turkey. The Büyük Menderes is the ancient Maeander River, entering the Aegean Sea south of Kuşadası; its basin encompasses a range of stream types from cool spring-fed headwaters to broader lowland reaches.
Research on Tersakan Stream, one of the core localities, reveals pronounced seasonal habitat preferences. Fish shift between microhabitats over the year: shady, spring-influenced areas are used in summer, turbid open-water sections in the hot months, and sections with dense aquatic vegetation in autumn and winter. This flexibility suggests the species tracks thermal refugia and food availability across seasons. Water in these Aegean drainages is typically neutral to mildly alkaline, moderately hard, and considerably cooler than the tropical systems associated with aquarium barbs — reflecting a Mediterranean and temperate Anatolian regime.
Feeding
C. aydinensis is primarily an algivore and periphyton grazer, as indicated by the hardened, keratinised lower jaw edge found throughout the genus Capoeta. This morphology functions as a scraper, allowing the fish to rasp epilithic algae and associated biofilm from rock and gravel surfaces in fast-flowing reaches. The arched mouth and convex jaw are both consistent with a benthic grazing posture.
Like most cyprinids, the diet is likely supplemented opportunistically with organic detritus, small invertebrates, and plant material. Its benthic, rheophilic lifestyle means it forages primarily on the substrate and on hard surfaces in the current. This diet and feeding style is well matched to the riffle and run habitats of southwestern Anatolian rivers, where epilithic algae can be abundant on stable substrates.
Mating
No detailed reproductive ethology has been published for C. aydinensis specifically, but the reproductive biology study of Tersakan Stream fish provides useful baseline data. Sexual maturity in females is reached at approximately 9 in total length, typically at age five; males mature earlier, at around 7.5 in TL and age four. As with virtually all barbs, C. aydinensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner.
Courtship in Capoeta is presumed to follow the general cyprinid pattern: active males pursue ripe females, driving them over gravel or among aquatic vegetation, and eggs and milt are released simultaneously with no bond formation and no territorial defence beyond the immediate act. The fish give no parental care — once eggs are shed and fertilised they receive no further attention.
Breeding
The Tersakan Stream study recorded a fecundity of approximately 7,833 eggs per mature female, indicating a moderately high output for a fish of this size. Lifespan is estimated at around eight years based on otolith or scale age-reading data from the same study. Spawning is almost certainly seasonal, timed to spring warming in the Aegean drainage system, consistent with the general pattern in Capoeta across Turkey.
As an egg-scatterer with no parental care, the species releases adhesive eggs over gravel or among subaquatic vegetation and then abandons them. There is no nest construction, no guarding behaviour, and no care of larvae. The relatively high fecundity compensates for the absence of parental investment — a life-history strategy typical of broadcast-spawning rheophilic cyprinids. C. aydinensis is not known to be maintained in aquaculture or captive breeding programmes.
In the aquarium
Capoeta aydinensis is not currently established as an aquarium fish and is unlikely to be available through the ornamental trade. Its range is restricted to southwestern Turkey, it lacks the vivid colouration of trade barbs, and it grows large. The biology of the genus — cool to temperate, well-oxygenated, hard water; benthic algae scraper; large-bodied — does not lend itself to the standard tropical community aquarium.
Were it to be maintained by a specialist, appropriate conditions would reflect its Aegean river origins: cool water (roughly 57–72 °F, tracking seasonal Anatolian temperatures), neutral to mildly alkaline and moderately hard chemistry, and strong filtration with high oxygen levels. A diet supplemented with blanched vegetables, algae wafers, and biofilm-covered rocks would suit its grazing morphology. For practical purposes, this is a species of scientific rather than hobbyist interest.
Conservation
C. aydinensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as a distinct species since its formal description in 2017, and carries no IUCN status. Its endemic range is limited to the Büyük Menderes basin and a small number of associated stream systems in southwestern Turkey — a total catchment area under significant anthropogenic pressure. The Büyük Menderes is one of western Turkey's most heavily used rivers: extensive agricultural water extraction for the Aegean lowland's cotton and fig cultivation, damming, pollution from agrichemicals and urban runoff, and channel modification all affect water quality and flow regime.
The discovery of an exceptional large specimen in Gökova Bay (Aegean Sea) in 2020 is ecologically noteworthy — it suggests that at least some individuals can reach coastal marine or estuarine waters, possibly via seasonal flooding or human-mediated transport. Regardless, the species' dependence on clean, well-oxygenated freshwater in a heavily altered basin, combined with its restricted range, indicates it deserves formal conservation assessment. Its position as a recently described endemic underlines the broader pattern of cryptic freshwater diversity in Anatolian drainages, much of which remains insufficiently surveyed.
