Taxonomy & naming
Capoeta alborzensis was described from the Nam River system of Tehran Province, Iran, with a holotype measuring 4.5 in standard length and a paratype series of 23 specimens ranging from 2–5.5 in SL. The species name alborzensis refers to the Alborz Mountains, the volcanic range that forms the backbone of northern Iran and defines the southern rim of the Caspian drainage; the Namak and Kavir basins, into which this fish drains, lie on the arid interior side of that range.
Molecular and morphological analyses place C. alborzensis within the Aralo-Caspian clade of Capoeta, clustering it with C. capoeta, C. heratensis, and C. fusca — species distributed across the river systems of Iran, Afghanistan and the broader Central Asian interior. The genus Capoeta belongs to the subfamily Cyprininae and is the dominant herbivorous barb genus across the western Palearctic, from the Iberian Peninsula east through the Levant, Anatolia, Iran and into Central Asia. Morphology
Capoeta alborzensis is a small to medium-sized barb. The type series spans a size range of 1.5–6.5 in SL across 23 specimens, with the holotype at 4.5 in SL, indicating adults routinely reach around 4–4.5 in standard length, with the largest individuals approaching 6.5 in. Like other Capoeta, it has the characteristic anatomy of a grazing barb: a subterminal or inferior mouth furnished with a sharp, keratinised lower jaw that acts as a scraper against rock and gravel surfaces, and a robust body suited to maintaining position in moderate to fast currents.
Detailed colour and scale-count descriptions are not available from the sources accessed. Capoeta species in general are silvery to olive-bronze on the flanks, often with a darker dorsal surface and pale ventrum; some show faint lateral banding or spotting, but the group tends toward plain colouration compared to the brightly marked Asian barbs of Sundaland.
Habitat

Habitat-model analyses indicate that C. alborzensis selects microhabitats combining relatively high stone diameter (coarse gravel to cobble), elevated temperature compared to upper Alborz sites, lower flow velocity than fast-mountain stretches, and narrower channel widths — the kind of mid-elevation, mid-gradient reach that links mountain torrents to the broad, sluggish lowland rivers of the interior basins. The Namak and Kavir basins are endorheic: their rivers drain internally toward seasonal salt lakes and playas rather than reaching the sea, isolating populations from those of neighbouring external drainages.
Feeding
Capoeta alborzensis is a benthic algae scraper, as is characteristic of the genus. The hardened, chisel-like lower lip allows it to rasp periphyton — attached filamentous algae, diatoms and biofilm — from rock and gravel surfaces in the river current. This feeding mode places it in the same functional guild as rheophilic loricariids and hillstream loaches on other continents, exploiting a food source that is abundant on illuminated, fast-flowing riffle substrates.

Capoeta alborzensis is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to appear in hobbyist collections. Its restricted endemic range, the remote nature of its type locality in Iran's interior, and the absence of any commercial collection pressure mean it is essentially unknown outside specialist ichthyological circles.
From a purely husbandry standpoint, the species' ecology — neutral, moderately mineralised water at around 75 °F, high oxygen demand from its fast-current native habitat, and a diet of algae scraped from hard surfaces — would require conditions similar to other temperate-to-warm Capoeta species kept by advanced cyprinid enthusiasts. A roomy, well-oxygenated aquarium with a smooth gravel substrate, moderate current, and algae growth on rocks would approximate its natural environment. No population has been established in the hobby, and any collection from wild Iranian endorheic systems would raise significant conservation concerns given the species' small range.
Conservation
Capoeta alborzensis has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List; no published assessment was identified in the sources consulted.
