Taxonomy & naming
Capoeta bergamae was described by the Yugoslav ichthyologist Stanko Karaman in 1969 in the seventh part of his monograph series on the freshwater fishes of Turkey (Süßwasserfische der Türkei). The type locality is Bergama, in İzmir Province in southwestern Anatolia — the historic city of Pergamon — from which the specific epithet is derived. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Capoeta bergamae (Karaman, 1969), with the parenthetical authority reflecting transfer from Karaman's original generic placement.
The genus Capoeta belongs to the large cyprinid subfamily Barbinae and represents a clade of scraper barbs distributed across the Middle East, Anatolia, the Caucasus and adjacent regions. Members of Capoeta are distinguished by their strongly keratinised lower lip — a rigid scraping edge used to rasp algae and biofilm — and by a pronounced rostral cap. The genus has been revised repeatedly, with species boundaries in the western Anatolian members refined through morphometric and, more recently, molecular work. Capoeta bergamae is considered part of a western Anatolian radiation that includes several geographically restricted species sharing broadly similar morphology.
Morphology
Capoeta bergamae is a moderately sized barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 8 in (male/unsexed), with maturity reported from around 6 in SL. The body is fusiform and somewhat compressed laterally, with a gently arched dorsal profile and a flattened ventral surface suited to life in flowing water over hard substrates.
Like all Capoeta, the species possesses a strongly cornified lower lip that forms a hard scraping edge, a rostral cap over the snout tip, and a subterminal to inferior mouth adapted for grazing attached algae and periphyton from rock surfaces. A single pair of rostral barbels is typically present, though barbel presence and development can vary within the genus. The dorsal fin has a bony last unbranched ray that may be smooth or weakly serrated. Coloration in life is generally olive-brown to bronze along the dorsum, paler on the flanks, and silvery on the belly; breeding condition and individual variation can produce brighter or more contrasting tones.
Habitat
Capoeta bergamae is endemic to western Anatolia, Turkey, with a documented range extending from the Bakacak River system on the Biga Peninsula southward to the Dalaman River catchment — a relatively narrow latitudinal band of rivers draining the western slopes of the Anatolian plateau toward the Aegean and Mediterranean. The species inhabits clear to moderately flowing freshwater systems, where it is recorded as benthopelagic and associated with hard substrates — gravel, cobble and bedrock — over which it scrapes periphyton.
The rivers of this region are broadly Mediterranean in character: seasonal in flow regime, with high discharge in winter and spring and marked low-water periods in summer. Water chemistry in western Anatolian drainages tends toward neutral to mildly alkaline and moderately hard, reflecting the carbonate geology of much of the Aegean hinterland. The species is not recorded from blackwater or soft-water environments.
Feeding
Capoeta bergamae is primarily an algivore and periphyton scraper, exploiting the hard keratinised lower lip and subterminal mouth that are the defining functional characters of the genus. It grazes diatoms, filamentous algae and associated microbial biofilm from rock and cobble surfaces in flowing water, supplementing this diet with organic detritus, benthic invertebrates and plant material opportunistically taken from the substrate.
This scraping ecology links the species tightly to the productivity and quality of hard substrate habitat in its home rivers. Clear, well-lit water supports the algal mat that forms the dietary base, while siltation or shading from riparian disturbance can reduce food availability. In common with other Capoeta, C. bergamae likely undertakes limited seasonal movements in response to flow regime and the availability of suitable foraging habitat.
Mating
Capoeta bergamae, as a member of family Cyprinidae, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed and no parental care of eggs or larvae is given. Courtship involves males actively pursuing gravid females through the water column and over the substrate; spawning fish release eggs and milt together, after which neither parent shows any further reproductive investment.
In the wild, spawning in western Anatolian Capoeta is tied to the seasonal hydrological cycle — rising water temperatures and increased river flow in spring likely act as proximate triggers. Broadcast spawning over gravel or among rocks in flowing water is the expected mode for the genus, consistent with the ecology of similar scraper barbs across the Middle East and Anatolia. Adults show no aggression or territoriality in defense of eggs.
Breeding
In the wild, reproduction in Capoeta bergamae is seasonal, linked to spring warming and the hydrological pulse characteristic of Mediterranean-climate rivers. Eggs are scattered over suitable hard substrate — gravel riffles or cobble beds — in flowing reaches of the river, and are adhesive enough to resist displacement in moderate current while receiving oxygenation from the flow. No parental care occurs; adults disperse after spawning and eggs receive no protection or tending.
Capoeta bergamae has not been documented as an established aquarium breeding subject in the hobby literature, and its reproductive biology in captivity is not well characterised. FishBase records the maturity size at approximately 6 in SL, indicating it is a relatively slow-maturing barb by the standards of smaller aquarium species. Captive spawning attempts in this genus generally require cool, well-oxygenated water and seasonal temperature cycling to replicate the natural cues.
In the aquarium
Capoeta bergamae is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby. Its large adult size — approaching 8 in SL — and requirement for cool, well-oxygenated, moderately hard and alkaline water reflect its origins in seasonally cool western Anatolian rivers, and it does not suit the warm tropical community tank that is the default hobbyist setup. The species would require a spacious aquarium with strong filtration and circulation to simulate the flowing, well-lit conditions of its natural habitat.
Where kept, Capoeta and similar scraper barbs benefit from hard substrate surfaces covered in algal growth, which can be encouraged by strong lighting. They are robust and active fishes but are better regarded as specialist cold-water or temperate-water subjects than community fish. As a Near Threatened endemic with a restricted wild range, wild-caught individuals should be sourced responsibly, and captive propagation of the genus is of broader conservation interest.
Conservation
Capoeta bergamae is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List (assessment published 2013). The species is endemic to a comparatively narrow stretch of western Anatolian river catchments — from the Biga Peninsula to the Dalaman River — and is additionally listed as endangered within Turkey under national criteria. Its restricted range makes it inherently vulnerable to catchment-scale disturbance.
The principal threats facing the species are those affecting freshwater biodiversity across the Mediterranean region: water extraction for agriculture and urban supply, river regulation and dam construction, pollution from agricultural runoff, and modification of riparian zones. Western Anatolian rivers face growing pressure from intensive horticulture and expanding coastal tourism infrastructure, both of which increase water demand and reduce base flows in summer — the period of lowest natural discharge for Mediterranean-regime streams. The status of this species relative to population trends warrants continued monitoring, and targeted surveys of its range rivers would help refine the assessment.
