Carasobarbus apoensis was described by Banister and Clarke in 1977, with the type locality recorded as a permanent stream near Khamis Mushyat in the Hijaz Mountains of Saudi Arabia. The species was originally placed in the genus Barbus, the broad Old World barb genus that served for decades as a catch-all for cyprinids with two pairs of barbels. Subsequent revisions redistributed many of these species; Carasobarbus, a genus with its centre of diversity in the Fertile Crescent and surrounding regions, is now recognised as the correct placement for this Arabian form by the Catalog of Fishes.
The genus Carasobarbus is characterised within the barb radiation by a distinctive combination of scale and barbel characters, and its range spans from the Levant and Anatolia eastward through Iraq and Iran to the Indian subcontinent, with C. apoensis representing a peripheral and highly isolated occurrence on the Arabian Peninsula. Morphology
Carasobarbus apoensis reaches a maximum recorded length of 11.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase, making it a moderately large barb by regional standards. The species carries one pair of barbels — a diagnostic character within the genus — and typically has 10 branched dorsal rays and 27 to 32 lateral-line scales. The caudal peduncle circumference usually shows 12 scales, a count used to distinguish it from related species.
In overall body form C. apoensis is elongate and fusiform in the manner typical of rheophilic barbs adapted to flowing water, with a somewhat rounded snout and a sub-terminal mouth suited for feeding along rocky or gravelly substrates. Detailed coloration data are sparse in the literature, but like related Carasobarbus species it is presumed to be silvery to olive-bronze on the flanks with darker dorsal pigmentation. Habitat
The species is confined to the mountain wadi systems of the Hijaz and Asir ranges in western Saudi Arabia. Confirmed localities include the wadis Turabah (near At Taif), Adamah, Habayaba, Buwah, and Khadrah, as well as streams near the type locality at Khamis Mushyat. These are highland stream systems at elevation, fed by seasonal rainfall and in some cases by springs, draining westward toward the Tihamah coastal plain and the Red Sea.
The Hijaz wadis present conditions typical of semi-arid mountain streams: clear to slightly turbid water over rocky and gravelly substrates, with moderate to fast flows during the rainy season and reduced or intermittent flow in the dry season. Water chemistry in these limestone and basalt highland catchments tends toward neutral to slightly alkaline and moderately hard, consistent with the geology of the Asir–Hijaz massif. Based on the biology of related large barbs, the species is an egg-scatterer: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are broadcast over gravel or rocky substrate during spawning, and no parental care of eggs or larvae follows.
In the wild, spawning likely coincides with seasonal wadi flows — the flood pulses of the Hijaz rainy season providing cooler, oxygenated water and the hydraulic cues that trigger reproductive behaviour. Saudi Arabia's western highlands have seen substantial agricultural and urban expansion, with groundwater pumping reducing baseflow in wadis that historically maintained permanent water through the dry season. As C. apoensis is entirely dependent on surface flowing water for its survival and reproduction, any reduction in perennial or near-perennial flow directly contracts available habitat. The species has no populations outside Saudi Arabia, and there are no known ex-situ conservation programmes.
Protection of the remaining wadi catchments — through regulated water abstraction, watershed management, and formal freshwater protected areas — would be the most direct conservation intervention. The species' restricted range and the absence of captive populations leave it with little buffer against further hydrological deterioration.
