Taxonomy & naming
Carasobarbus exulatus was described by Kenneth Banister and Michael Clarke in 1977 in their monograph on the freshwater fishes of the Arabian Peninsula, originally placed in the genus Barbus. The species is now referred to Carasobarbus, a genus of large-bodied barbs distributed across the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula, and parts of North Africa and the Horn of Africa. The old combination Barbus exulatus appears in earlier literature and on some databases.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid placement. Carasobarbus exulatus is distinctive within the genus because it is the only member in which both pairs of barbels — rostral and maxillary — are invariably developed; in other species one or both pairs may be reduced or absent. The type locality is recorded as a permanent stream near Khamis Mushayt, 18°17'N, 42°34'E, in the Wadi Hadramaut system of Yemen.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 11.5 in for males and unsexed individuals, making this one of the larger barbs in the Arabian Peninsula fauna. The body form is typical of Carasobarbus: relatively elongate and robust compared with the small shoaling barbs of South and Southeast Asia, suited to life in turbulent or confined watercourses rather than open, slow-moving rivers.
The diagnostic feature of the species — the consistent presence of both rostral and maxillary barbel pairs — separates it cleanly from congeners. Beyond this, detailed morphological description is limited in the available literature, reflecting how few specimens have been examined since the original description in 1977. The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the water column above the stream or pool substrate.
Habitat
Carasobarbus exulatus is restricted to the Wadi Hadramaut drainage in central Yemen, a vast endorheic system that drains the interior of the Hadhramaut plateau before eventually reaching the Gulf of Aden. Within this arid landscape, the fish survives in permanent and semi-permanent water bodies — pools and reaches of wadis that retain water through the dry season even when surrounding channels are dry.
The environment is very different from the tropical river systems that support most barb diversity. Yemen's interior wadis experience extremes of temperature and intermittent flow, with water chemistry that tends toward neutral to alkaline and moderate to hard, reflecting the limestone and evaporite geology of the region. Specific temperature and pH data for the Wadi Hadramaut populations are not documented in the available sources.
Feeding
The feeding biology of Carasobarbus exulatus in the wild is not documented in the available literature; FishBase provides no diet data for the species. Based on the ecology of the genus and its benthopelagic habit, it likely feeds on invertebrates, algae, and organic material found on and near the substrate of the pools and wadi channels it inhabits.
Larger Carasobarbus species in other parts of the Middle East are known to consume plant matter, invertebrates, and detritus, and a similar opportunistic omnivory is probable for this species given the restricted and variable nature of its desert-wadi habitat.
Mating
No reproductive observations of Carasobarbus exulatus in the wild or in captivity appear in the available literature. Like other barbs, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Eggs are scattered over the substrate with no parental care; adults give no protection to eggs or larvae. Given the restricted and fragile nature of the species' habitat, any captive-held individuals would represent significant conservation value, though no such programme is currently recorded.
In the aquarium
Carasobarbus exulatus does not appear in the aquarium trade and is not available to hobbyists. Its restricted endemic range in an endorheic Yemeni wadi system, combined with the political and logistical difficulties of accessing Yemen, means that live specimens are extremely unlikely to reach the hobby. No care information exists.
As a medium-to-large barb from alkaline, hard desert-wadi water, it would require conditions very different from those of the tropical Asian barbs that dominate the trade — cooler temperatures, harder and more alkaline water, and robust filtration. Its conservation status as Endangered makes any collection for the trade inappropriate.
Conservation
Carasobarbus exulatus is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded in 2012. The species qualifies for this status primarily on the basis of its extremely restricted range: it is known from only one or two wadi systems in central Yemen, and its total extent of occurrence is very small. The principal identified threat is water extraction — the diversion and pumping of water from the permanent and semi-permanent pools that represent the species' only habitat in an otherwise arid landscape.
Yemen faces severe and worsening water stress driven by population growth, agricultural demand, and limited recharge of aquifer systems. The Wadi Hadramaut has been subject to increasing human water use, and any substantial reduction in the permanent water bodies within the system could drive this already-restricted species toward extinction. The ongoing conflict in Yemen makes monitoring and conservation interventions extremely difficult. No captive population or ex situ conservation programme is recorded for this species.
