Taxonomy & naming
Cosmochilus cardinalis was described by Yü-Lin Chu and Tyson R. Roberts in 1985 in the Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences (vol. 44, pp. 1–7), based on material from the Lancang-jiang (the Chinese reach of the Mekong) in Yunnan Province. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, records the current valid combination as Cosmochilus cardinalis Chu & Roberts, 1985.
The genus Cosmochilus belongs to the family Cyprinidae. It is distinguished from the broader mass of Asian barbs traditionally placed in Puntius and related genera by a combination of scale and lateral-line characters; Cosmochilus was never part of the old Puntius complex affected by the Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) revision, and the genus placement has remained stable. C. cardinalis is one of the larger species in this genus.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum size of 13 in standard length (SL), making Cosmochilus cardinalis a large barb by the standards of the family. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, built for life in rivers with perceptible current.
The colouration is distinctive: the flanks are silvery-white with a golden sheen, and all fins are red. Both the dorsal and anal fins carry a narrow black border along their outer edges, a feature that contributes to the bold, contrasting appearance that the epithet cardinalis — from the cardinal-red of the ecclesiastical colour — evokes. No other meristic or morphometric details beyond these are recoverable from available sources.
Habitat
The type locality is the Lancang-jiang (Mekong River) in Yunnan Province, China, and FishBase records the species' distribution as the Mekong in Yunnan. It is a river-dwelling species that FishBase associates with a habitat of moderate water current over a muddy bottom — a large-river benthic or benthopelagic mode of life consistent with other Cosmochilus species in the Mekong system.
The Lancang-jiang at Yunnan elevations is a fast, often turbid montane river that grades into the broader, warmer lowland Mekong downstream. Specific temperature, pH and hardness data for C. cardinalis in the available sources are sparse; the upper Mekong in Yunnan is generally cool to warm-temperate depending on season and altitude, with water quality reflecting both the crystalline headwaters and the silty load typical of flood periods.
Feeding
No detailed dietary data for Cosmochilus cardinalis appear in the available sources. By analogy with related large Mekong cyprinids and the genus Cosmochilus more broadly, the species is likely an omnivore or benthic forager, taking invertebrates, organic detritus, algae and plant material from the river bottom and the water column.

Mating
No spawning observations for Cosmochilus cardinalis have been reported in the available literature. As a cyprinid barb, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner universal to the family. Large river barbs in the Mekong system are typically seasonal broadcast spawners, with reproductive migrations tied to the flood pulse: rising water temperatures and the onset of the monsoon rains trigger upstream or lateral movements into flooded shallows and tributary mouths where spawning takes place over gravel or among submerged vegetation.
No pair bond is formed, and there is no territorial defence or nest construction. Males compete to approach gravid females, releasing milt as eggs are shed.
Breeding
Cosmochilus cardinalis has not been bred in captivity as far as can be determined from available sources, and the species is not present in the ornamental trade in any meaningful quantity. Large Mekong cyprinids of this type would require substantial space and specific seasonal or environmental cues to spawn, and no established method has been described.
Eggs are expected to be non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, scattered over the substrate with no parental care — adults would not guard or tend eggs or fry in any way. Artificial propagation of large, threatened Mekong cyprinids is practised in China for conservation and restocking purposes, but no reports of C. cardinalis in such programmes are available.
In the aquarium
Cosmochilus cardinalis is not an aquarium fish in the conventional sense. At a maximum recorded size of 13 in SL, it is far too large for domestic aquaria, and it does not appear in the trade. Even public aquaria would need very large river-display systems to house adults properly.
For the purposes of the hobby, it is best regarded as a wild species of conservation interest rather than a candidate for keeping. Its bold red-and-silver colouration and large size make it a noteworthy species in the Mekong ichthyofauna, but its requirements — large river volume, seasonal thermal cues, appropriate water flow — cannot realistically be met in captivity.
Conservation
Cosmochilus cardinalis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. The species is confined to the Mekong River in Yunnan Province, a stretch of river that has undergone dramatic transformation through the construction of a cascade of large hydropower dams. The Lancang dam cascade has altered flow regimes, blocked migration routes, changed sediment loads and affected water temperature, collectively disrupting the conditions on which large rheophilic cyprinids depend for reproduction and feeding.
Additional pressures on large Mekong cyprinids in Yunnan include targeted fishing, incidental capture in subsistence and commercial nets, and broader habitat degradation from deforestation and agricultural runoff in the catchment. The restricted distribution of C. cardinalis — known from a single river system in a single province — makes it particularly vulnerable to these pressures. No specific recovery measures targeting this species are documented in available sources.
