Taxonomy & naming
Cosmochilus falcifer was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1906. The genus Cosmochilus is a small genus of large cyprinids from the rivers of mainland Southeast Asia and Sundaland; it is not synonymous with the paraphyletic old Puntius aggregate and was not affected by the 2012 Pethiyagoda et al. revision that redistributed so many smaller barbs among new genera. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the combination as Cosmochilus falcifer Regan, 1906.
The epithet falcifer is Latin for 'sickle-bearer' — from falx (genitive falcis, 'sickle' or 'scythe') and -fer (from fero, 'to carry or bear') — a direct reference to the greatly enlarged and sickle-shaped fins that characterise the species. The same image is reflected in the common names Sicklefin Soldier Barb and Scythe-fin Barb, while Soldier Barb is a broader vernacular applied to the fish in the hobby.
Morphology
Cosmochilus falcifer is a large, robust barb reaching 19 in in total length — among the biggest barbs found in the Sundaland freshwater system. The body plan is typical of a large river cyprinid: elongated, moderately compressed laterally, with a substantial caudal peduncle and a large, deeply forked tail. The defining feature of the species is the notably elongated and falcate (sickle-shaped) fins, particularly the dorsal, from which both the scientific and common names arise.
Precise colouration data are limited in the available literature, but as a large Bornean river cyprinid the species likely carries the silvery to brassy flanks and darker dorsal pigmentation common to related large-river barbs. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail in the accessible literature; in most large migratory barbs females are larger and heavier-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Cosmochilus falcifer is endemic to the Kapuas River system of western Borneo, Indonesia — the longest river in Borneo and one of the most biodiverse freshwater systems in the world. Within this basin the species occupies a range of lowland flowing-water habitats including main-channel river margins, larger tributaries, forest creeks without strong current, swamp forest, and vegetated river banks. The Danau Sentarum region — an extensive system of interconnected lakes and floodplain forest in the upper Kapuas basin — is among the documented localities.
Water chemistry across the Kapuas system ranges from soft, acidic blackwater in peat-swamp drainages to more neutral conditions in the main channel. Available data suggest the species tolerates a pH range of approximately 4.0–7.0 and water temperatures of 68–79 °F, consistent with the soft, tannin-stained lowland waters of Sundaland. The Kapuas system drains much of the central Bornean interior through a mosaic of peat swamp, kerangas heath forest, and lowland dipterocarp forest, all of which contribute to its predominantly soft, brownwater chemistry.
Feeding
In the Kapuas lakes system, Cosmochilus falcifer has been recorded feeding on insect larvae and crustaceans — a diet consistent with a large benthic or benthopelagic predator that roots among leaf litter, woody debris, and riverbed substrate for macroinvertebrates. This diet profile is broadly similar to that of other large Bornean river cyprinids that exploit the rich invertebrate fauna of blackwater and swamp-associated drainages.
No aquarium feeding observations are available in the accessible literature for this species. By analogy with related large barbs, it likely accepts a wide range of meaty foods in captivity, including large live and frozen invertebrates, sinking pellets, and perhaps some plant material.
Mating
Like all barbs, Cosmochilus falcifer is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no nest construction and no parental care of eggs or young. What sets this species apart from smaller shoaling barbs is the scale and seasonal structure of its reproductive behaviour: it is migratory, making upstream runs during the dry season to spawn in the headwater and hill-river reaches around Putussibau or Nanga Pinoh in the upper Kapuas drainage.
This migratory reproductive strategy — aggregating large numbers of adults that move upriver together in response to seasonal hydrological cues — is consistent with broadcast-spawning over gravel or coarse substrate in fast-flowing tributary reaches, a pattern well documented in large mahseers and other migratory cyprinids of the region. No pair bond is maintained, and there is no territory held beyond the transient displacement behaviour typical of spawning aggregations.
Breeding
Cosmochilus falcifer is a seasonal broadcast spawner. Adults migrate upstream through the Kapuas main river and its larger tributaries during the dry season, converging on spawning areas in the upper basin. Eggs are scattered over the substrate — likely coarse gravel or rocky riverbed in flowing-water reaches — and receive no parental care; adults disperse after spawning and eggs develop unattended.
No captive breeding of this species has been recorded in the available literature, which is unsurprising given its large adult size, strongly migratory life history, and apparent rarity in the aquarium trade. The reproductive biology follows the same fundamental egg-scattering plan as all other barbs, but executed at the scale and with the seasonal precision of a large, itinerant river fish.
In the aquarium
Cosmochilus falcifer is not a standard aquarium fish. At up to 19 in total length and with a strongly migratory life history tied to the hydrology of the Kapuas River, it is suited only to very large public aquaria or specialist facilities that can replicate the space and water-volume requirements of a large, active river cyprinid. It is occasionally encountered in specialist circles under the names Soldier Barb or Sicklefin Soldier Barb but is not commercially available in any significant numbers.
For the rare keeper with appropriate facilities, the species would require a very large tank with strong filtration, good oxygenation, and soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the range of 68–79 °F — parameters matching its Kapuas blackwater home. A diet of large live and frozen invertebrates, supplemented with quality sinking pellets, would be appropriate. The sickle-shaped fins and substantial size make it a visually striking fish, but its husbandry demands place it firmly outside mainstream hobbyist keeping.
Conservation
Cosmochilus falcifer is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated February 2019. The species is endemic to the Kapuas River system and appears to have a reasonably stable population within that basin, with no evidence of major range-wide decline at the time of assessment.
Nevertheless, the Kapuas system faces growing pressures. Deforestation and the drainage and conversion of peat-swamp forest across western Borneo continue to degrade the blackwater habitats on which the species depends. Migratory fish are additionally vulnerable to physical barriers such as weirs and irrigation infrastructure that block upstream spawning runs. Artisanal and subsistence fisheries in the Kapuas lakes region take a range of large cyprinids, and sustained fishing pressure on a migratory spawning aggregation can erode a population faster than non-migratory species. Ongoing monitoring of this endemic Bornean species would be warranted as land-use change in Kalimantan accelerates.
