Barbodes aurotaeniatus is a modest-sized cyprinid of mainland Southeast Asia, native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins and a scattering of smaller coastal drainages along the Gulf of Thailand. Described by Gabriel Tirant in 1885 from Thu-dâu-môt in southern Vietnam, it carries a clean suite of diagnostic characters — a single pair of maxillary barbels, a complete lateral line, and four small black markings arranged vertically along the flank with a fifth on the dorsal surface — set against a pale body with the faint golden sheen that its specific epithet, meaning 'gold-ribboned', records. A wide-ranging and adaptable species equally at home in flowing streams, irrigation canals and impoundments, it is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN and poses no special challenge in the aquarium, though it remains less common in the hobby than more flamboyantly patterned relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbodes aurotaeniatus was described by Gabriel Tirant in 1885 as Barbus aurotaeniatus, from material collected at Thu-dâu-môt in what is now southern Vietnam, within the lower Mekong drainage. The species subsequently wandered between several genera as the systematics of Asian cyprinids were revised: it has appeared in the literature as Puntius aurotaeniatus, Systomus aurotaeniatus and, under a once-used synonym, as Barbus pessuliferus and Puntius stigmatosomus. The combination Puntius samatensis has also been placed in its synonymy.

The current valid placement in Barbodes follows Kottelat (2013), whose broad revision of the inland fishes of Southeast Asia reorganised the sprawling old Puntius complex and assigned this species to Barbodes — a genus characterised in part by the presence of maxillary barbels and a relatively large body size. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Barbodes aurotaeniatus (Tirant, 1885), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the move from the original genus Barbus. Diagnostic characters include a single pair of maxillary barbels, a complete lateral line, and a distinctive marking pattern of four small vertically-oriented black spots on the flank plus one on the dorsal surface.

Morphology

Barbodes aurotaeniatus is a medium-small barb with a maximum total length of around 3.5 in, though most individuals in the aquarium remain closer to 2.5 in standard length. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, with the fairly robust build typical of the genus. A single pair of maxillary barbels is present; the lateral line is complete.

The ground colour is pale silvery to lightly golden. The most characteristic feature is the pattern of four small, vertically-oriented black markings along the flank and a fifth on the dorsal surface — a subtler arrangement than the bold bars or spots seen in many popular barb species, but consistent and diagnostically useful. The specific epithet aurotaeniatus, meaning 'gold-ribboned', refers to the faint golden lateral sheen visible in fresh specimens. Fin colouration is unremarkable. Sexual dimorphism is modest: ripe females become visibly deeper-bodied and rounder in the belly than males.

Habitat

The species occupies a range of freshwater habitats across the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages and smaller coastal rivers of southeastern Thailand. In the wild it is recorded from medium to large flowing streams and rivers as well as stagnant or slow-moving water bodies — irrigation canals, ditches and impoundments — demonstrating a breadth of tolerance unusual among more habitat-specialised cyprinids of the region.

Water parameters across its range span a moderately wide band: Seriously Fish records a pH of 6.0–7.5 and a hardness of roughly 36–268 ppm, with temperatures of 64–79 °F. This breadth reflects the variety of habitats the species encounters across a large river system that runs from cool highland reaches to warm, slow lowland channels and man-made water bodies near sea level. Substrates are variable; the species is not confined to any particular sediment type.

Feeding

Barbodes aurotaeniatus is an omnivorous opportunist in the wild, foraging on worms, insects, small invertebrates, plant material and detritus. This generalist diet is consistent with its wide habitat tolerance and its occurrence in both natural streams and agricultural water bodies, where food sources shift with season and land use.

In the aquarium it is undemanding and accepts good-quality flake and pellet foods readily. A varied diet supplemented with live or frozen items — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia — alongside some vegetable matter will keep fish in good condition and support optimal colouration. Its willingness to take practically any offered food is one of the practical advantages of keeping the species.

Mating

Like all barbs, Barbodes aurotaeniatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond beyond the act of spawning itself, and no parental care of any kind. When in breeding condition a driving male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, the two pressing together momentarily as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

Spawning is typically triggered by warmth and a period of good feeding. Colour in males intensifies at this time, and courtship chasing is vigorous. Because adults eat the scattered eggs at any opportunity, the act of mating is brief and non-collaborative; once eggs have been released the fish resume normal foraging behaviour with no attention to the spawn.

Breeding

Barbodes aurotaeniatus can be bred in aquaria using methods standard for egg-scattering cyprinids. A shallow spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a mesh or marble layer on the bottom — to allow eggs to fall out of the adults' reach — provides the essentials. A well-conditioned pair is introduced and spawning usually follows within a day or two.

Adhesive eggs are scattered among plants or onto the substrate and will be eaten by the parents if not protected. Adults should be removed after spawning is complete. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures, and larvae become free-swimming within a few days. First foods are infusoria or very fine commercial fry food, followed by freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. The species is straightforward to raise and offers no special challenges beyond the usual requirements of barb spawning.

In the aquarium

Barbodes aurotaeniatus is described as a peaceful species suitable for a community aquarium. Its relatively modest size — to around 3.5 in — and tolerant temperament make it compatible with a range of tankmates of similar disposition. Like most barbs it is a shoaling species and does best in groups, which allow natural social behaviour and reduce any tendency toward skittishness in the individual fish.

Water conditions should reflect those of its native Mekong and Chao Phraya habitats: temperatures in the mid-to-upper teens to mid-twenties Celsius, a pH of 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. It is tolerant of a wider range than many specialists and adapts well to conditions that would stress more sensitive species. Decor can include plants, driftwood and open swimming areas. Diet is undemanding. The species is not commonly encountered in the trade relative to more popular Asian barbs, but its adaptability and peaceable nature make it a worthwhile find.

Conservation

Barbodes aurotaeniatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, a status that reflects its wide distribution across two of Southeast Asia's largest river systems — the Mekong and the Chao Phraya — as well as smaller coastal drainages of the Gulf of Thailand. Its tolerance of degraded habitats, including irrigation canals and impoundments, provides a degree of resilience not available to more habitat-specialised species.

The Mekong basin faces significant and growing anthropogenic pressure: mainstream dams in China and Laos have altered downstream flow regimes and blocked fish migration corridors; intensive agriculture drives sedimentation and agrochemical loading; and rapid urban and industrial expansion continues along tributary systems. While no range-wide decline specific to Barbodes aurotaeniatus has been documented, these basin-scale pressures are relevant to the long-term security of its populations, particularly in the lower Mekong where habitat modification is most advanced.
