Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora subtilis was described by Tyson R. Roberts in 1989, with the Kapuas River of West Kalimantan, Borneo as its type locality. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names, and the species is recorded under the current combination Rasbora subtilis Roberts, 1989.
The genus Rasbora has undergone substantial revision over the past few decades. Kottelat and Witte (1999) and subsequent authors carved out a series of satellite genera — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides, among others — from what was once a catch-all Rasbora. Not all species in the resulting Rasbora are necessarily monophyletic with one another, and future molecular work may reshuffle the genus further. Rasbora subtilis itself has not been the subject of detailed phylogenetic placement beyond its original description; it is retained in Rasbora pending revision.
The specific epithet subtilis is Latin for 'fine', 'slender' or 'delicate', most likely referring to the slight build of the fish.
Morphology
Rasbora subtilis is a small, slender-bodied cyprinid with the typical streamlined shape of the genus. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for males; the overall body form is elongate and laterally compressed, with a small, somewhat terminal mouth.
Detailed morphological descriptions beyond the original Roberts (1989) account are not widely available in the accessible literature, and aquarium photographs of confirmed specimens are scarce. As with many small Borneo rasboras, the species is likely plain-coloured or marked with a lateral stripe, but specific details of pigmentation, fin structure and meristics are best sought in the original description. Data are sparse for this species.
Habitat
Rasbora subtilis is known only from the Kapuas River system, the largest river in Kalimantan, draining a vast lowland catchment in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic and freshwater tropical, occurring along lake shores and in shallow open areas within the system.
The Kapuas basin is a Sundaland river system with extensive peat-swamp forests and blackwater tributaries. Co-occurring endemic rasboras in comparable Borneo drainages typically inhabit warm (approximately 75–82 °F), soft, acidic water (pH around 5.5–6.5) with low conductivity and tannin staining from decaying organic matter, and conditions in the relevant parts of the Kapuas system are broadly similar. Specific water-chemistry data for the precise collection localities of R. subtilis have not been published in the accessible literature; the above values are inferred from the regional context rather than species-specific measurements.
Feeding
No detailed dietary studies of Rasbora subtilis in the wild appear in the accessible literature. By analogy with its congeners and with the ecology of small rasboras generally, it is likely an omnivorous micropredator taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and similar items — from the water column and surface, supplemented by algae and organic detritus.
In an aquarium context, small rasboras of this size accept fine-grade commercial flake or micro-pellet foods readily, and regular offerings of live or frozen daphnia, cyclops and similar small fare maintain condition. Specific feeding observations for this species in captivity are not documented in sources consulted.
Mating
Rasbora subtilis has not been observed spawning in the aquarium, and no field accounts of its reproductive behaviour are available. On the basis of its placement in Rasbora and the universal pattern among danionin cyprinids of this kind, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner.
In danios and rasboras generally, courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or open water, the pair releasing eggs and milt together in brief contacts among fine-leaved plants, mosses or submerged roots. No pair bond is formed beyond the spawning act, and neither parent guards or attends the eggs after deposition.
Breeding
No captive breeding accounts for Rasbora subtilis are documented in sources consulted, and it appears to be essentially absent from the specialist aquarium hobby. Based on its family and genus, it would be an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss or substrate, with no parental care — adults will consume the eggs if given the opportunity.
Should captive specimens become available, the soft, warm, acidic conditions of a Sundaland blackwater setup — low pH (around 5.5–6.5), low conductivity, temperature in the 75–82 °F range, dim lighting and tannin-stained water — would represent the most ecologically appropriate approach for conditioning and spawning attempts. Fry, if produced, would be expected to require very fine foods such as infusoria and later newly hatched brine shrimp in the early weeks.
In the aquarium
Rasbora subtilis is not established in the aquarium hobby and is rarely if ever available in the trade. It is a narrow endemic known from a single river system and has not attracted the attention that better-known Borneo rasboras such as Rasbora kalochroma or members of Boraras have received.
In principle, its care requirements would follow those of similar small soft-water Borneo rasboras: a well-established, mature aquarium with soft, acidic, tannin-stained water, subdued lighting, fine-leaved planting or Java moss, and the company of its own kind in a shoal. Its maximum size of around 1.5 in makes it suitable for nano or species aquaria. Until specimens become reliably available in the hobby, its husbandry remains theoretical.
Conservation
Rasbora subtilis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessment recorded against IUCN Red List 2022.2). Despite being a restricted endemic known only from the Kapuas River system, its LC status reflects the large size of the Kapuas drainage and the absence of evidence for population decline at the time of assessment.
Nonetheless, the broader Sundaland region faces significant and ongoing threats to freshwater habitats. The peat-swamp forests and lowland rivers of Kalimantan have been subject to large-scale drainage, agricultural conversion (particularly for oil palm), logging, mining-related siltation and pollution. Species with narrow endemic ranges in these systems are inherently vulnerable to such pressures even when currently assessed as Least Concern. Continued monitoring of the Kapuas ichthyofauna, and improved documentation of the ecology and distribution of little-known endemics such as R. subtilis, would strengthen future assessments.
