Taxonomy & naming
Dawkinsia arulius was described by the British army surgeon and naturalist Thomas C. Jerdon in 1849 from the Cauvery River at Seringapatam (modern Shrirangapathna), Karnataka, India — a type locality that sits at the heart of the species' known range. Jerdon placed the fish in Barbus, and it subsequently passed through several generic combinations before settling under the expansive Puntius, where most South Asian barbs were aggregated for much of the twentieth century.
The current valid placement in Dawkinsia follows the comprehensive revision of peninsular Indian barbs by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage (2012), which used morphological characters to carve several natural genera out of the old polyphyletic Puntius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Dawkinsia arulius (Jerdon, 1849) as the valid name, with the parenthetical authority indicating the original combination has been changed. The old combination Puntius arulius is widely encountered in aquarium literature and trade records and remains the name most hobbyists know.
The specific epithet arulius is the Latinised form of "aRuL" — a Tamil/Kannada word. The common name "Arulius barb" derives directly from this epithet, and the fish is sometimes called the Longfin barb for the elongated rays of the dorsal fin in adult males.
Morphology
Dawkinsia arulius is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed barb reaching a maximum total length of 4.5 in, making it one of the larger species available to the freshwater aquarist. The body is silvery to brassy on the flanks with a greenish or bluish iridescent sheen, and three or four dark vertical bars or blotches mark the sides — these are variable in expression across individuals and population localities, sometimes distinct and sometimes faded, particularly in older fish.
The most striking feature of mature males is the development of extended rays on the dorsal fin, producing a banner-like trailing tip that is absent or less pronounced in females. Males are also generally slimmer and more intensely coloured; females become noticeably deeper-bodied when ripe with eggs. The fins carry touches of orange-red on the lower lobe of the caudal fin and the pelvic fins, more vivid in dominant, well-conditioned males. Juveniles show crisper banding that may soften with age.
Habitat
In the wild, Dawkinsia arulius inhabits small and large streams and rivers with flowing, well-oxygenated water over substrates of gravel, pebbles, rocks and boulders. The species is recorded from the Cauvery, Sharavathi, and Tunga river systems in Karnataka, the upper reaches of the Cauvery drainage in Tamil Nadu, and Pookode Lake in the Wayanad district of Kerala — a range confined largely to the Western Ghats and adjacent hill zones of peninsular India.
The waters of this region are typically cool relative to tropical lowland rivers, clear to lightly turbid during the dry season, and subject to strong monsoon-driven spates from June to September that raise water levels, temperature, and turbidity dramatically. FishBase records a temperature range of 66–77 °F and a pH of 6.0–6.5 for the species, with low hardness (0–10 dGH), consistent with the soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic character of the upland Western Ghats drainages. Seriously Fish notes monsoon seasonality as an important ecological driver, with peak activity and likely spawning linked to the onset of rains.
The species is benthopelagic in its habits — feeding and moving through the water column above rocky and gravel substrates — and forms shoals that afford protection in the swift, open reaches of its native rivers.
Feeding
Dawkinsia arulius is an omnivore, feeding in the wild on a broad diet that includes aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — worms, insect larvae and adults, crustaceans — alongside plant material and organic detritus. This opportunistic feeding strategy is typical of active, shoaling riverine barbs that exploit the varied food inputs of a seasonally fluctuating river system.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of foods without difficulty. High-quality sinking and floating pellets or flakes provide a nutritional baseline; regular supplementation with live or frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae — supports condition and colouration. Some plant matter and spirulina-based food is beneficial. The species feeds actively throughout the day and competes well at mealtimes, though its large size means it should not share a tank with fish small enough to be viewed as prey.
Mating
Like all barbs, Dawkinsia arulius is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no parental investment beyond the act of fertilisation. Courtship in the wild is likely timed to the onset of the monsoon, when rising water temperatures, increasing flow and a flush of food trigger reproductive readiness — a pattern common across the riverine barbs of the Western Ghats.
A conditioned male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over gravel and rocky substrate, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. There is no pair bond, no defended territory beyond transient courtship chasing, and no nest or spawning site constructed or maintained. The scattered eggs, being adhesive, fall among plants, into gravel interstices, or onto the substrate, after which neither parent shows any further interest in them.
Breeding
Dawkinsia arulius can be bred in aquaria, though its larger size and preference for cool, well-oxygenated water demand slightly more care than smaller tropical barbs. A separate spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.5, low hardness, temperature around 72 °F), good filtration to maintain oxygenation, and clumps of fine-leaved plants such as Taxiphyllum or spawning mops provides the conditions the fish associate with the flowing, plant-margined reaches of their native rivers.
Conditioning the adults on live and frozen foods for one to two weeks before introducing them to the spawning tank encourages readiness. Spawning typically occurs in morning light, with a driving male pursuing the female through the plants. Adhesive eggs are scattered among the vegetation or fall to the bottom; both adults should be removed after spawning, as they will eat the eggs given the opportunity. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at the target temperature, and free-swimming larvae begin feeding on infusoria and small live foods after the yolk sac is absorbed. In the aquarium
Dawkinsia arulius is a rewarding barb for aquarists who can accommodate its size — a spacious tank is essential, with at least 59 in of run length providing the open water this active, fast-moving shoaler needs. A group of eight to ten or more is strongly recommended: like most barbs it is a social fish that displays its best colours and most natural behaviour within a cohesive shoal, and small numbers lead to stress, drabness, and potential harassment of tankmates.
The species prefers cool, clean, well-oxygenated water consistent with its upland Western Ghats origins — a temperature of 66–77 °F, pH 6.0–6.5, and low hardness. Strong filtration with some current, regular water changes, and good surface gas exchange replicate the riverine conditions the fish is adapted to. A substrate of fine gravel or pebbles, scattered smooth stones, and patches of robust planting suit the species well without blocking the open swimming lanes it gravitates toward.
Compatible tankmates should be of similar size and share a preference for cool, flowing conditions — other large Western Ghats or Deccan Plateau cyprinids make natural companions. Smaller or slow-moving fish are poor choices. The species is peaceful within a group and directs most social energy inward. It is an undemanding feeder once settled and can be long-lived in well-maintained conditions.
Conservation
Dawkinsia arulius is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B2ab(iii) — meaning its extent of occurrence is restricted, its range is severely fragmented or few locations are known, and there is evidence of continuing decline in the quality and extent of its habitat. The assessment was carried out in 2010 by Robin Abraham as part of the Western Ghats Freshwater Species Assessment, and the listing reflects the narrow, declining river system the species depends on.
The threats facing the Cauvery and its tributary drainages in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are severe. Extraction of water for irrigation and urban supply has drastically reduced flows in many reaches; dam construction has fragmented what were once continuous river systems, blocking fish movement and altering the thermal and hydrological regimes that species like D. arulius have evolved with. Agricultural and domestic pollution has degraded water quality in accessible lowland reaches, while gravel extraction from streambeds removes the substrate structure the species uses for shelter and spawning. Although the Western Ghats are globally recognised as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, freshwater species within the region remain poorly represented in conservation planning relative to terrestrial taxa, and enforcement of existing protections is uneven.
Dawkinsia arulius is present in the aquarium trade and is captive-bred in reasonable numbers, which limits collection pressure on wild stocks, but this offers no relief to the river systems themselves. Meaningful long-term conservation requires active management of the Cauvery basin's hydrology and an expansion of freshwater biodiversity monitoring in the Western Ghats.
