Taxonomy & naming
Dawkinsia filamentosa was formally described by Achille Valenciennes in 1844, originally placed in the genus Cyprinus. The species has since passed through several generic combinations: it was long carried as Puntius filamentosus and is also known under the synonym Systomus maderaspatensis Jerdon, 1849, an earlier name based on specimens from the Madras region. WoRMS and other nomenclatural databases confirm the current valid combination as Dawkinsia filamentosa, with the parenthetical authority marking its move out of Valenciennes's original genus.
The genus Dawkinsia was erected by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 as part of a thoroughgoing revision that dismembered the catch-all genus Puntius across the Indian subcontinent. Named in honour of biologist Richard Dawkins, Dawkinsia accommodates a cluster of Indian Peninsula and Sri Lankan barbs that share a distinctive dorsal-fin filament in mature males. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid placement, and aquarium literature citing this species as Puntius filamentosus should be understood as referring to the same fish under its old name. The name Dawkinsia singhala is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Dawkinsia filamentosa is a moderately large barb, reaching up to 7 in in total length — substantially bigger than the small barbs of the aquarium trade. The body is deep and laterally compressed, the hallmark shape of the group. Colouration is silvery to olive-brassy on the flanks, with a faint dark lateral stripe running to the caudal base and darker dorsal pigmentation. Adults typically show a red or orange flush on the dorsal and caudal fins.
The species' common name derives from the elongated, filamentous last ray of the dorsal fin, which develops prominently in mature males and is the most readily distinguishing feature from similar species. Females tend to be deeper-bodied and rounder when gravid, lacking the pronounced filament. Like other Dawkinsia species, the sexual dimorphism sharpens with age and condition.
Habitat
The filament barb occupies a broad range of lowland freshwater and marginal habitats across peninsular India and Sri Lanka, including rivers, estuaries, coastal floodplains, reservoirs, marshes and occasionally brackish tidal zones. FishBase records it from Asia (India) in clear streams, lakes, ponds and lowland river systems. Seriously Fish notes its presence in lowland coastal floodplains with fresh and brackish influence, reflecting its tolerance of estuarine conditions.
Water chemistry data from FishBase indicates a pH of approximately 6.5 and temperatures around 75 °F, consistent with warm lowland tropical conditions. Seriously Fish records conditions around pH 6.5 and 73 °F with relatively hard water (circa 152 mg/L hardness). This combination points to a fish of warm, soft-to-moderately-hard tropical lowland water — quite different from the cool, fast hill streams favoured by many Dawkinsia congeners — suggesting a species adapted to coastal plain rather than upland conditions.
Feeding
Dawkinsia filamentosa is an omnivore. Seriously Fish records its natural diet as worms, insects, crustaceans, plant material and organic debris, which together describe the typical opportunistic feeding regime of a large lowland riverine barb. Like most cyprinids it forages throughout the water column and picks at the substrate, grazing on whatever invertebrates and organic matter are available seasonally.
In the aquarium, the species accepts a wide variety of foods. A varied diet of good-quality pellets and sinking wafers, supplemented regularly with live or frozen items such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and earthworms, and rounded out with vegetable matter, will keep large adults in good condition. Its omnivory and willingness to take most offered foods make it relatively straightforward to feed despite its size.
Mating
Like all barbs, Dawkinsia filamentosa is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond and no parental care. In mature males the elongated dorsal-fin filament and intensified colour become most conspicuous during courtship, signalling condition to potential mates. A driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or across the substrate, the two fish pressing together to release eggs and milt in brief bursts.
No territory is held, no nest is constructed, and the adults take no further interest in their eggs after spawning. In large lowland river systems spawning is likely seasonal, triggered by water-level fluctuations and temperature shifts associated with monsoon rains — a common pattern in South Asian cyprinids of riverine floodplain habitat.
Breeding
Dawkinsia filamentosa has been spawned in captivity. Its relatively large adult size means breeding requires a spacious aquarium. A typical approach mirrors that used for other large South Asian barbs: a separate spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and a mesh or coarse substrate layer to protect the scattered adhesive eggs from the adults once spawning is complete.
Well-conditioned pairs or a small group are introduced after a period of generous feeding on live and varied foods. Spawning generally follows in the early morning. Eggs are adhesive and hatch within one to two days at warm tropical temperatures; the larvae become free-swimming a few days later and are fed infusoria, then newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults will eat eggs and fry if not removed promptly after spawning — no parental care is given at any stage.
In the aquarium
The filament barb's adult size of up to 7 in means it demands a large aquarium — a tank of 55 US gal or more is a practical minimum for a small shoal. Seriously Fish recommends keeping it in groups of at least eight to ten to satisfy its schooling instincts and distribute any restless inter-fish behaviour; singly or in small numbers it can become withdrawn or stressed. It is a peaceful species despite its size, and is best housed with robust tankmates of comparable dimensions.
Water conditions should reflect its lowland coastal origins: warm water (72–77 °F), moderate hardness and near-neutral pH, with good filtration and regular water changes — Seriously Fish recommends 30–50 % weekly. The species benefits from well-oxygenated water and moderate current. Given its threatened status in the wild, captive breeding should be encouraged where facilities allow, and sourcing wild-caught specimens carefully.
Conservation
Dawkinsia filamentosa is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List as of 2023 (assessor: Neelesh Dahanukar). This represents a significant conservation concern for a species that was widely regarded as common across peninsular India and Sri Lanka. The lowland coastal habitats it depends on — floodplains, coastal rivers, estuaries and marshes — are among the most heavily modified freshwater environments in South Asia, subject to agricultural encroachment, water extraction, dam construction, pollution and urban development.
Collection for the ornamental trade has also been a pressure on some populations. The combination of habitat degradation and direct exploitation across a naturally fragmented coastal lowland range has driven the reassessment to Endangered. Captive populations in the aquarium hobby may have a role to play in maintaining genetic material while wild habitats come under increasing pressure, though no formal ex situ conservation programme is presently documented for this species.
