Dawkinsia exclamatio is a small, slender barb endemic to the Kallada River system of southern Kerala, India — one of the narrowest natural ranges of any freshwater fish on the Indian subcontinent. Described in 2005 from the clear, rocky tributaries of the Western Ghats, the species takes its name from the exclamation mark formed by its lateral spot-and-stripe pattern when the fish is viewed head-down. It is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, largely because a dam on the Kallada has inundated an estimated 70 percent of its habitat and severed its two remaining subpopulations from one another.

Taxonomy & naming

Dawkinsia exclamatio was described by Rohan Pethiyagoda and Maurice Kottelat in 2005, originally placed in the genus Puntius as Puntius exclamatio — a placement that held the great majority of South Asian barbs under one unwieldy genus for most of the twentieth century. The original combination is therefore Puntius exclamatio Pethiyagoda & Kottelat, 2005, and the current authority, with parentheses, reflects the subsequent genus transfer.

The genus Dawkinsia was erected by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 as part of a broad revision that split the old Puntius into several well-defined genera on the basis of morphological and molecular evidence. Dawkinsia accommodates a group of medium-sized South Indian and Sri Lankan barbs that carry a characteristic lateral blotch pattern and were previously grouped informally as the "Puntius filamentosus" complex. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Dawkinsia exclamatio as the valid current name.

The species epithet exclamatio is Latin for "exclamation mark" and refers to the striking lateral colour pattern: a dark mid-lateral blotch followed by a stripe on the caudal peduncle that, when the fish is viewed from slightly above or from the front, suggests the punctuation mark. This descriptive etymology aligns with the Dawkinsia group's convention of naming species for their lateral markings.

Morphology

Dawkinsia exclamatio is a moderately slender barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in (SL) per FishBase — a size typical of the mid-sized members of its genus. The body is laterally compressed and moderately deep, with the short, pointed snout and terminal mouth characteristic of the Dawkinsia complex.

The most diagnostic feature is the lateral colour pattern from which the species takes its name: a prominent, roughly oval dark blotch sits at mid-body just below the lateral line, and a dark stripe extends along the caudal peduncle toward the tail — together producing the exclamation-mark impression that led Pethiyagoda and Kottelat to coin the epithet. Detailed scale counts and fin-ray formulae distinguishing exclamatio from congeners are recorded in the original description; the two nearest relatives within Dawkinsia share a similar blotch pattern but differ in proportions, extent of the peduncular stripe and fin pigmentation.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Kallada River of southern Kerala and has been recorded specifically from two tributaries: the Umayar and the Kulathupuzhayar. These are clear, permanent hill streams draining the southern Western Ghats at elevations that produce cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water. The substrate is dominated by rocks and pebbles, with slower pools interspersed among riffles — the habitat profile typical of many Western Ghats endemic cyprinids.

The IUCN assessment notes that the species uses both slow- and fast-flowing sections within the same river reach, suggesting it is not confined to a single microhabitat type. The clear water, neutral to slightly acidic chemistry and cooler temperatures of these hill streams contrast sharply with the warm, often turbid lowland rivers where many aquarium barbs originate; Dawkinsia exclamatio is a fish of quality upland water, not a tolerant generalist.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Dawkinsia exclamatio has been published. Based on its morphology — a terminal mouth without pronounced barbel development and a moderately deep body suited to active foraging — and by analogy with other Dawkinsia congeners, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore. Western Ghats hill barbs in this size range typically feed on small aquatic invertebrates (chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, mayfly nymphs), algal films scraped from rock surfaces, and plant matter or detritus carried in the current.

The clear, fast-flowing stream environment it inhabits tends to be productive for drift-feeding on invertebrates, and the species' preferred pebble-and-rock substrate provides both invertebrate prey among the interstices and biofilm-coated surfaces. In the aquarium, congeners in the Dawkinsia filamentosus group accept a broad range of prepared foods supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates.

Mating

Like all barbs, Dawkinsia exclamatio is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No courtship observations specific to this species have been published, but the pattern shared across Dawkinsia and the broader barb family is consistent: there is no nest, no territory held beyond a fleeting courtship bout, and no pair bond. A driving male pursues a gravid female through the water column or among the rocks and vegetation of the stream floor, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, pressing contacts.

In hill-stream species, spawning is often seasonal and linked to the monsoon rains, which flush the streams, cool the water and bring a pulse of invertebrate prey that conditions adults rapidly. The two remaining subpopulations of D. exclamatio in the Umayar and Kulathupuzhayar tributaries are now separated by the Kallada dam reservoir, which disrupts any upstream migration that may once have accompanied the onset of the rains.

Breeding

Spawning has not been documented in the aquarium for this species specifically. By extension from other Dawkinsia and the general barb pattern, the female scatters adhesive eggs among rocks, pebbles or root masses, and the adults provide no parental care whatsoever — indeed, the eggs are at risk of being eaten by the spawning adults themselves if they remain accessible. Eggs hatch within one to two days at suitable temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming within a few further days.

The fragmented state of the wild population — two small subpopulations separated by reservoir habitat hostile to a clear-water lotic species — means that natural recruitment is likely limited to short, discrete reaches of the two remaining tributaries. The presence of invasive common carp (Cyprinus carpio) in the dam reservoir adds a further barrier to any natural exchange between subpopulations.

In the aquarium

Dawkinsia exclamatio is collected incidentally for the ornamental trade alongside other Kallada hill barbs, though it does not appear to be established in the hobby under a recognised trade name. Given its Endangered status and the fragility of its wild population, deliberate targeted collection for export is a conservation concern flagged in the IUCN assessment.

For hobbyists who do encounter the species, the cool, fast, clear-water hill-stream template applies: well-filtered, highly oxygenated water in the lower-to-mid twenties Celsius range, near-neutral pH, and a substrate of smooth stones and gravel will reflect its natural environment. As a schooling barb it should be kept in groups; single specimens or very small groups are likely to be stressed and less active. Its modest size (under 3.5 in SL) suits a mid-sized aquarium, and its active temperament and bold lateral pattern make it an attractive fish for the specialist interested in Western Ghats endemics.

Conservation

Dawkinsia exclamatio is classified as Endangered (EN) under IUCN criteria B1ab(ii,iii)+2ab(ii,iii), assessed in April 2010 and published in 2015. The criteria reflect a small extent of occurrence (EOO approximately 1,320 mi²) combined with a severely restricted area of occupancy (AOO approximately 31 mi²) across just two known locations, along with continuing decline in the area and quality of its habitat.

The dominant threat is the Kallada Irrigation Dam, which the IUCN assessment estimates has eliminated approximately 70 percent of the species' former habitat by inundating the lower Kallada and creating a reservoir of warm, silt-laden standing water that the clear-water hill barb cannot use. Illegal dynamite fishing in the remaining tributaries damages both the fish directly and the rocky substrate structure the species depends on. Common carp introduced into the reservoir may compete with or predate on native species at the reservoir margins.

The species does occur within the boundaries of the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kulathupuzha Reserve Forest, which affords some watershed-level protection to the remaining tributaries. Nonetheless, the IUCN notes that the assessment is in need of updating and that the small, fragmented population warrants continued monitoring. The use of the species in the local gill-net fishery as incidental bycatch, and its collection for the ornamental trade, are secondary pressures on a population already severely constrained by habitat loss.
