Taxonomy & naming
Dawkinsia rubrotincta was originally described by Thomas C. Jerdon in 1849 as Systomus rubrotinctus, based on specimens from the Mananthavadi River, a tributary of the Kabini and ultimately of the Cauvery, in Wayanad District, Kerala. Francis Day synonymised it with Puntius arulius in 1878, a treatment that persisted for over a century and left rubrotincta effectively invisible in the literature.
Knight and colleagues revalidated the species in 2011 on morphological grounds, distinguishing it from D. arulius principally by its three well-defined, discrete black body blotches (versus the diffused or elongated markings of arulius). The following year, Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage (2012) erected the genus Dawkinsia in their landmark synopsis of South Asian Puntius and moved rubrotincta into it, where it stands under the Catalog of Fishes today. The parenthetical authority notation — (Jerdon, 1849) — reflects the move out of Jerdon's original genus.
The genus Dawkinsia encompasses a cluster of ornately marked Indian barbs previously scattered across the old, polyphyletic Puntius, and is part of the broader post-2012 restructuring of South Asian cyprinids into more natural genera.
Morphology
Dawkinsia rubrotincta is a moderately large barb, reaching approximately 3.5 in standard length (roughly 3–3.5 in SL in life) according to FishBase data. The body is laterally compressed and moderately deep, in the typical barb form. The dorsal fin carries 11 soft rays and the anal fin 8, counts recorded in the original comparative work.
The most diagnostic feature is the pattern of three well-defined, discrete black blotches on the flank, positioned at roughly even intervals along the body. This distinctness of blotch — clean-edged and round — separates it from the otherwise similar Dawkinsia arulius, in which the same markings tend to be elongated or smeared. The epithet rubrotincta ("red-tinged") likely refers to a reddish or orange flush in the fins or on the body, consistent with the coloration typical of mature Dawkinsia species, though precise colour descriptions in the original literature are sparse.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Cauvery River drainage in the Western Ghats region of southern India, with records from Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Its type locality, the Mananthavadi River in Wayanad District, Kerala, is a clear, fast-flowing hill stream that descends from the Western Ghats into the Kabini, a major Cauvery tributary.
Like most Western Ghats riverine barbs, D. rubrotincta inhabits fast, well-oxygenated, typically clear waters over rocky, gravelly or sandy substrates, at elevations where the rivers retain strong seasonal flow tied to the monsoon. Water chemistry data from Seriously Fish give a temperature range of 64–77 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and hardness of approximately 36–179 ppm, consistent with the cool, near-neutral to mildly acidic hill-stream conditions typical of the upper Cauvery watershed. The species is described as benthopelagic and riverine, and moves through both the water column and near the substrate.
Feeding
Dawkinsia rubrotincta is an omnivore. The diet in the wild encompasses small invertebrates — worms, aquatic insects and crustaceans — along with plant material and organic detritus, a broad opportunistic feeding strategy shared by most barbs of similar size and habitat.
In an aquarium context the species accepts a wide range of prepared foods: quality flakes or pellets form a suitable staple, supplemented with live or frozen items such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and tubifex, and occasional vegetable-based foods. A varied diet is recommended both for nutritional completeness and to maintain condition and colour.
Mating
Dawkinsia rubrotincta is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with all known Dawkinsia and the barb family broadly. There is no nest construction, no mouthbrooding and no parental care of any kind. Spawning is typically triggered by seasonal cues in the wild — likely the onset and intensity of monsoon flows in the Cauvery watershed, which bring cooler temperatures and elevated oxygen levels.
During courtship an active male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or across the substrate, the two pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released in simultaneous bursts. Eggs are adhesive and settle among plants, gravel or rock interstices. Adults take no further interest in the eggs and will eat them if they remain accessible.
Breeding
Detailed captive-breeding accounts for D. rubrotincta specifically are sparse in the published hobby literature, but the reproductive strategy — egg-scattering with no parental care — is standard for Dawkinsia and applies here. In aquarium conditions analogous to those used for related large Indian barbs, spawning can be induced by providing a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at the cooler end of the species' tolerance (around 68–72 °F), fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a substrate or mesh layer to protect eggs from the adults.
A gravid female and a conditioned male are introduced and left overnight; spawning typically occurs in the morning hours. The adults must be removed promptly after spawning, as they will consume the scattered adhesive eggs. Eggs hatch in one to two days depending on temperature; larvae become free-swimming after a further few days and are fed infusoria initially, then newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow.
In the aquarium
Dawkinsia rubrotincta is a schooling species that should be kept in groups; single specimens or small numbers become skittish and may show aggression toward tankmates. A group of six or more allows the natural social hierarchy of the school to form and keeps behaviour within the group rather than directed outward.
The species is suited to a roomy aquarium with good water flow and filtration to replicate the well-oxygenated rivers of its native Western Ghats habitat. Water temperature toward the cooler end — 64–75 °F — is advisable; the fish's natural range includes hill-stream conditions that would be stressful to warm-water tropical species. A pH of 6.0–7.5 and moderate hardness are appropriate. Sand or fine gravel substrate with areas of open swimming space and some planting reflects its natural environment. Robust mid-water companions of similar temperament work best; the species is not particularly aggressive but its active nature and size make it unsuitable with very small or delicate fish. Availability in the trade is limited compared with the more widely kept Indian barbs, but it is occasionally found through specialist importers.
Conservation
Dawkinsia rubrotincta has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article; FishBase records its status as Not Evaluated (NE) as of version 2025-2. Its restricted range within the Cauvery drainage of the Western Ghats means it is subject to the pressures affecting the entire Western Ghats freshwater fauna: dam construction on the Cauvery and its tributaries (the Kabini Dam impounds part of the river system containing the type locality), water extraction for agriculture and urban supply, siltation from deforestation and land conversion on the Ghats slopes, and pollution from agricultural runoff.
The Western Ghats is recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot, and many of the barbs endemic to its river drainages are narrowly distributed; range fragmentation caused by impoundments can isolate populations and accelerate local decline. While no specific population data are available for D. rubrotincta to judge the extent of any decline, its narrow endemic range and the documented stresses on the Cauvery system are cause for monitoring attention.
