Taxonomy & naming
Eirmotus octozona was described by Leonard Peter Schultz in 1959 from specimens obtained through the aquarium trade, with the type locality recorded as Bueng Boraphet (Bung Borapet), a large lake in western-central Thailand. The holotype (USNM 177521, 1.5 in SL) is housed at the Smithsonian. Schultz placed the species in the genus Eirmotus, which he erected in the same work for a small cluster of Southeast Asian barbs distinguished by a distinctive arrangement of sensory papillae on the head, large scales, and an incomplete lateral line.
The genus and species were comprehensively revised by Heok Hee Tan and Maurice Kottelat in 2008 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology. That revision confirmed Schultz's authority and placement, redescribed E. octozona in detail (maximum size 1.5 in SL), and presented strong evidence that the Bueng Boraphet type locality is erroneous — the species has never been recollected there despite repeated sampling efforts, and the habitat is inconsistent with Eirmotus ecology. Tan and Kottelat concluded that the true native range is most likely restricted to the southern Malay Peninsula and possibly Johor state in Malaysia, with records from Borneo. The Catalog of Fishes follows this placement.
The specific epithet octozona derives from the Latin octo (eight) and zona (belt or band), referring to the eight dark transverse bars on the body — a straightforward descriptive name in the tradition of Schultz's mid-century cyprinid work.
Morphology
Eirmotus octozona is a very small, moderately deep-bodied barb, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in (approximately 1.5 in SL) in the 2008 revision. The body is laterally compressed with a relatively high back, typical of the small Sundaland barb guild.
The colour pattern is striking for the fish's size: a warm yellow to reddish-orange ground colour is overlaid with eight distinct dark brown to black vertical bars, extending from the dorsal surface down the flanks. A pre-anus dark mark is also present and is noted as a diagnostic character in the Tan and Kottelat revision. The fins are generally pale to faintly coloured. The head bears characteristic sensory papillae, a feature that sets Eirmotus apart from the broader barb fauna of the region. Scales are large relative to body size, and the lateral line is incomplete — both characters used by Schultz and later Tan and Kottelat to diagnose the genus.
Habitat
The available evidence points to E. octozona as a specialist of slow-flowing to standing soft-water habitats in lowland forested floodplains — specifically peat swamps, forest-margin streams, swampy lakes, and inundated areas typical of the Sundaic lowlands. Seriously Fish summarises the habitat as slightly acidic to near-neutral water, soft to moderately hard, in line with the tannin-stained blackwater character of Malay Peninsula peat-swamp systems.
Water parameters reported for the species are: temperature 72–79 °F, pH 5.0–7.0, hardness 18–143 ppm (soft to moderately hard end of the peat-swamp spectrum). The Tan and Kottelat (2008) revision specifically notes that forest cover removal affects Eirmotus populations quickly, implying the species is closely tied to intact forested wetlands rather than degraded or open-water habitats. FishBase lists the temperature range as 75–79 °F, consistent with warm tropical lowland conditions.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies of E. octozona in the wild are lacking. Based on its habitat — slow-moving and standing soft waters rich in leaf litter, fine organic particles, algae and small invertebrates — and its feeding behaviour in captivity, Seriously Fish categorises it as an omnivore taking small invertebrates, algae and zooplankton.
In aquaria it is reported to accept small prepared foods alongside live and frozen items such as micro-worms, daphnia and baby brine shrimp. Its small adult size (under 1.5 in) limits prey size, and a varied diet of suitably fine-grained foods is recommended by hobbyist sources to keep the fish in good condition.
Mating
No specific courtship observations for E. octozona have been published. Like all barbs, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner: there is no pair bond, no nest, and no parental involvement beyond the act of spawning itself. Breeding in Eirmotus is recorded as unconfirmed in captivity by Seriously Fish, though the egg-scattering mode is inferred from family-level biology and the Tan and Kottelat revision's characterisation of the species as a typical barb in reproductive habit.
In courtship, as in other small barbs of the region, a ripe male would be expected to pursue a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair briefly pressing together to release eggs and milt simultaneously. Eggs are adhesive and fall among plants or substrate. Adults do not guard them.
Breeding
Captive breeding of E. octozona appears to be largely unrecorded in the published literature. Seriously Fish lists breeding as unrecorded, and the Tan and Kottelat (2008) revision does not document reproductive behaviour. The species is inferred to follow the standard barb egg-scattering pattern: eggs scattered adhesively over fine-leaved plants, roots or the substrate in soft, slightly acidic water, with no parental care and adults consuming eggs if given access.
For hobbyists attempting to breed this species, standard small-barb protocol would apply: a separate shallow spawning tank with very soft, slightly acidic warm water (72–77 °F, pH 5.5–6.5), fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. The small adult size means fry, if obtained, would be correspondingly tiny and require infusoria or comparable micro-foods in the first days of free-swimming.
In the aquarium
Eirmotus octozona is described by aquarium trade specialists as a delicate but peaceful and rewarding small barb, best suited to a species tank or a carefully composed blackwater biotope. Its adult size of 1–1.5 in makes it suitable for small aquaria, and it is reported to present no behavioural problems with comparably sized, non-boisterous tankmates. Aquarium Glaser GmbH, a specialist importer, characterises it as appropriate for small blackwater tanks.
Water conditions should reflect its native peat-swamp habitat: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic (pH 5.0–7.0), warm (72–79 °F), with subdued lighting, dark substrate and the presence of leaf litter or driftwood to replicate the tannin-stained environment. It is an occasional arrival in the specialist trade rather than a mass-market species, appearing in small numbers from Malaysia and Indonesia. Its rarity in trade and apparent sensitivity to water quality place it in the category of a fish for the informed barb enthusiast rather than a general beginner.
Conservation
Eirmotus octozona has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries no official status beyond Data Deficient as reflected in FishBase and Seriously Fish. Its restricted natural range — apparently limited to the southern Malay Peninsula and parts of Borneo — combined with the Tan and Kottelat (2008) finding that the species is quickly affected by forest cover removal gives grounds for conservation concern even without a formal assessment.
The lowland peat-swamp forests and forested floodplain wetlands that E. octozona depends upon are among the most heavily degraded habitats in Southeast Asia. Peninsular Malaysia and the Malaysian and Indonesian parts of Borneo have experienced extensive conversion of peat swamps to oil palm and other agriculture, drainage for development, and recurrent peat fires. If the species' range is as restricted as the 2008 revision suggests, these pressures could have materially reduced its population without triggering a data-based assessment. A targeted survey of Johor peat-swamp remnants and appropriate Bornean drainages would be the necessary first step toward understanding its true status.
