Eirmotus furvus is a diminutive blackwater barb endemic to the coastal peat-swamp forests of Jambi Province, Sumatra, reaching only about 1.5 in standard length. Described by Tan and Kottelat in 2008, it stands apart from its congeners by a conspicuously dark overall appearance — the name furvus is Latin for dusky — and by unusually wide, bold vertical bars that span roughly one and a half to two lateral-row scales in width. It is a peat-swamp specialist, tolerating the extreme acidity and tea-coloured water of lowland Sumatran blackwater systems that most fishes avoid, and it has never been common in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Eirmotus furvus was described by Heok Hee Tan and Maurice Kottelat in 2008 in their revision of the cyprinid genus Eirmotus, published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (vol. 56, no. 2). The holotype, specimen MZB 10971 measuring 1 in SL, was collected from Sungai Air Hitam Dalam in the Berbak Nature Reserve, Jambi Province, Sumatra (1°17'54.8"S 104°08'30.4"E). The species has been in the genus Eirmotus since its original description and has not been transferred.

The genus Eirmotus is a small cluster of diminutive Southeast Asian cyprinids, and the 2008 revision considerably expanded it with three new species including E. furvus. In the broader context of Asian barb taxonomy, the 2012 revision by Pethiyagoda and colleagues dismantled the old catch-all genus Puntius, redistributing hundreds of species across new genera; Eirmotus was not directly affected by that reshuffle but sits within the same wider radiation of small cyprinids. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names, and the current valid name is Eirmotus furvus Tan & Kottelat, 2008.

The specific epithet furvus is Latin for dark or dusky, a direct reference to the species' noticeably darker overall coloration compared with its congeners. The genus name Eirmotus has been interpreted as referring to a restrained or retiring body form, consistent with the secretive habits of these small swamp fishes.

Morphology

Eirmotus furvus is a small barb, reaching a maximum of approximately 1.5 in standard length (about 1.5 in total length). It shares the moderately elongate, laterally compressed body plan typical of the genus, with the short snout and subterminal mouth of a benthic opportunist.

The species is diagnosed within Eirmotus by the width of its dark vertical bars: roughly one and a half to two lateral-row scales wide, compared with only half to one and a half scales in other members of the genus. This gives it a bolder, more contrasted pattern than its congeners. The simple (unbranched) dorsal rays are black along their entire length — another distinguishing character — and all fins carry scattered chromatophores, imparting the overall duskiness that gives the fish its name. Ground colour is dark, in keeping with its blackwater peat-swamp habitat.

Habitat

Eirmotus furvus is a peat-swamp specialist and, uniquely among the Eirmotus species known at the time of its description, has been collected only from black-water peat swamp forests. Its known range is restricted to the Batang Hari drainage in Jambi Province, eastern Sumatra, in the vicinity of the Berbak Nature Reserve and the Rantau Panjang and Sabak areas near the coast.

The species inhabits the interior of forested peat swamps, occurring only in the less-disturbed, deeper sections well away from degraded or open habitat. The water in these systems is characterised by extreme softness, very low pH driven by dissolved tannins and humic acids leached from the accumulating peat, near-zero conductivity, and the deep brown coloration typical of Sundaland blackwater. Substrate is typically deep, soft, waterlogged peat with a surface layer of leaf litter and woody debris; the water column contains dense submerged roots and vegetation. These conditions make the habitat among the most chemically extreme encountered by any freshwater cyprinid.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Eirmotus furvus has been published. Based on its small size, body shape, and the broader ecology of small blackwater cyprinids in Sundaland peat swamps, the species is inferred to feed on small invertebrates and zooplankton — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and similar benthic or planktonic prey — along with organic detritus associated with leaf litter.

In the aquarium, small cyprinids from peat-swamp environments typically accept fine live and frozen foods such as micro worms, baby brine shrimp, and daphnia. High-quality micro pellets are also taken, though live and frozen items likely best support the fish's condition. Feeding in groups reduces competition stress in this retiring species.

Mating

Eirmotus furvus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in common with all barbs and the broader cyprinid family. No dedicated observations of spawning behaviour in this species have been published, but the reproductive biology follows the pattern universal in Eirmotus and small peat-swamp barbs: a driving male pursues a gravid female through dense vegetation or root tangles, and the pair release eggs and milt in brief embraces over the substrate or among plants.

There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no territory defended beyond the transient movements of courtship. Adults pay no attention to scattered eggs and will consume them given the opportunity. In the wild, the dense root and leaf-litter matrix of peat-swamp habitat likely provides the eggs with some physical shelter from predation regardless.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for Eirmotus furvus are scarce, reflecting the species' rarity in the hobby. In principle the approach suitable for other small peat-swamp barbs applies: a shallow, dimly lit breeding tank with very soft, acidic, tannin-stained water (pH 4.5–6.0, near-zero hardness), fine-leaved plants or Java moss, and a mesh layer or dense plant cover to protect eggs from being eaten by the adults.

Broadcast-scattered adhesive eggs would be expected to hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae appearing a few days later. First foods for fry would be infusoria and paramecia, graduating to micro worms and newly hatched brine shrimp. Breeding is a secondary consideration for most keepers: the priority is providing conditions extreme enough to maintain this blackwater specialist in good health.

In the aquarium

Eirmotus furvus has never been common in the aquarium trade and is regarded as a specialist fish. Its extreme habitat requirements — very soft, very acidic peat-swamp water with pH values sometimes below 5, near-zero conductivity, dim lighting, and a rich tannin load — are difficult to replicate and far outside the tolerances of most community fish.

A dedicated blackwater setup is appropriate: a dark substrate, heavy leaf litter (Indian almond leaves, catappa bark), driftwood, and minimal flow. The species is small and retiring and does best without boisterous or larger tankmates; other peat-swamp specialists (small rasboras, chocolate gouramis) are more compatible companions. It is a secretive fish that needs dense cover and will be stressed by a bare or brightly lit tank. For keepers able to provide these conditions it is an interesting and rarely displayed species, but it is not recommended for beginners or standard community setups.

Conservation

Eirmotus furvus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in January 2019. The evaluation notes the species from the Batang Hari drainage area of Jambi Province, Sumatra.

Despite the Least Concern rating, the species is a peat-swamp forest specialist with a narrow range tied entirely to intact, low-disturbance blackwater forest. Sumatra's lowland peat swamps have suffered some of the highest deforestation rates in Southeast Asia over the past three decades, driven by conversion to oil-palm and acacia plantations, drainage for agriculture, and peat fires. The Berbak Nature Reserve, which includes the type locality, provides some formal protection, but surrounding areas have experienced substantial habitat loss. Species such as E. furvus that are physiologically constrained to the interior of forested peat swamps and refuse to use degraded or open habitat are inherently vulnerable to landscape-scale forest clearance even when they are not directly targeted by collection.
