Enteromius anema was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1903. Boulenger, working extensively with African freshwater fishes at the Natural History Museum in London, originally placed the species in the genus Barbus, which served through most of the twentieth century as the primary receptacle for small barbs from Africa, Europe and parts of Asia. The species was later transferred into Enteromius, a genus progressively re-established following the large-scale revision of the old Puntius and Barbus aggregates in the early 2010s; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) is the authority for the current valid combination Enteromius anema (Boulenger, 1903), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the move from the original genus.
Enteromius is one of the larger African cyprinid genera and remains partially in taxonomic flux. Many of its species were described from single or few collections, and the morphological characters used to distinguish them — scale counts, stripe patterns, barbel number — can overlap across populations. As a result, some names in the genus may prove synonymous on further revision, while others may conceal cryptic species. Enteromius anema is among the species for which detailed molecular or large-sample morphological work has not been published, and its precise relationships within the genus are not resolved.

Enteromius species occupy a wide range of lotic environments — from slow, humic forest streams with soft, acidic water to faster, clearer savanna rivers and headwater rills with moderate hardness — and the precise habitat type for this species has not been independently documented in the sources available for this survey.
The species' origin in the 1903 Boulenger collection points to West or Central African drainage systems as the most probable native range, though pinpointing the type locality and any additional records would require access to the original description and the regional museum specimen literature. Water temperatures in this part of Africa are tropical to sub-tropical, typically in the range of 72–81 °F depending on altitude and season, with chemistry varying from soft and acidic in forest drainage to harder and more neutral in open-country rivers.
Feeding
Like virtually all Enteromius species, E. anema is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore. Small African stream barbs of this type typically take a diet of aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, algae and organic detritus, gleaned from the substrate, water column and biofilm according to availability. Many species in the genus show some degree of dietary flexibility across seasons and habitats.

Mating
Enteromius anema is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, following the reproductive pattern universal among barbs. There is no nest construction, no bubble nest, and no mouthbrooding. Spawning is preceded by active courtship in which a ripe male drives a gravid female through vegetation, over submerged roots, or across the substrate, pressing close as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
No pair bond is formed, and there is no territorial defence beyond the transient pursuit of the spawning act. The eggs are scattered onto the substrate or among plant material and receive no further attention from either parent.
Breeding
As an egg-scatterer with no parental care, Enteromius anema follows the standard African stream-barb reproductive strategy. Eggs are adhesive and fall among plants, gravel or fine substrate after release; left to the adults, they are at high risk of predation — including by the spawning fish themselves. Incubation and larval development timings have not been documented for this species in the accessible literature.
In an aquarium setting the approach used for similar small African barbs would apply: a separate shallow spawning vessel with soft, warm water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a mesh or substrate layer to protect eggs from adult predation. In the aquarium
Enteromius anema is not established in the mainstream aquarium trade and is unlikely to be encountered in the hobby outside of specialist African cyprinid circles or as an incidental collection from field surveys. No dedicated aquarium husbandry literature exists for this species.
By analogy with other small, stream-dwelling Enteromius barbs, it would be expected to thrive in a well-filtered aquarium with moderate current, open swimming space, some fine-leaved plant cover, and tropical temperatures around 73–79 °F. Like all barbs of this type, it should be kept in a shoal of at least six to discourage nervous or erratic behaviour. The genus as a whole is regarded as undemanding to feed, accepting standard small-barb foods readily.
Conservation
Enteromius anema has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List based on the sources available for this survey. Many small, range-restricted African Enteromius species fall into the Not Evaluated or Data Deficient categories simply because targeted fieldwork and specimen-based population surveys have not been conducted. The species' true range, abundance and population trend are unknown.
The broader pressures on African freshwater fish communities — watershed degradation, deforestation, agricultural runoff, artisanal mining, and dam construction across West and Central African river systems — represent realistic background threats to any small stream barb with a limited or poorly documented range. Without baseline range and abundance data, the conservation status of Enteromius anema cannot be assessed.
